12th TIME A CHARM OR……?
October 31, 2005
Tuesday, we will see if Alan Greenspan can make it TWELVE in a row (rate hikes). In a little over one year, Greenspan has raised the rate from 1% to 3.75%, so bring on 4%. And, my bet is that he makes it unlucky 13 before he says adios January 31st..
The market (Dow) can’t seem to figure out what’s going on, having dropped over 100 points on day, only to raise over 100 the next. But here’s what I’m thinking. The next big batch of bad news could come from one or more bankruptcies by major hedge funds. We’ve seen it before and it just might happen again.
From what I’ve been reading, some hedge funds are under water for the year, and getting more and more desperate. Desperate men do desperate things- and so do hedge fund managers who think they are about to go under.
The 12th time might be a charm for the Fed, but not for big money.
