POLITICS- Part Two
October 31, 2003
Wednesday, I began a five day countdown to election night. Five days of “hellish ad campaigns” designed to drive you out of your mind! You can go back to Wednesday if you missed part one.
As I said, the election next Tuesday could be a “hinge” on which the doors of destiny swing. Bush thinks so. In these last five days he is visiting 16 states (3+ a day). And after the Wellstone group made his “memorial” more of a “political rally” (to which they even admitted the mistake) and told Cheney to stay away, the Republicans decided to make them pay!
Cheney will visit the state immediately, Bush will head there Sunday, and even Laura Bush and Barbara are coming to town. Mondale might have been VP but the Bush team is on a mission. You see, Bush is out to show that history can be turned on it’s political head. He’s out to defy the facts that show the party in power loses seats during the off election years.
The 108th Congress is supposed to belong to Dick Gephardt (note the spelling Streisand). Win back that six seat deficit and you’re not only the majority leader of the House, but you thrust yourself ahead of Gore for 04!
It looks like a photo-finish. With six House seats and one Senate seat being the difference, only God knows the outcome. I’m glad He does because I have this sinking feeling that there are several Florida wanna-bes out there that will mess up, prolong, and otherwise challenge the elections. Minnesota and New Jersey head that list.
Did I mention that there are 34 governorships at stake as well? Part three late Friday or very late Saturday as I will be in the air 12 more hours Saturday in order to get back Saturday night.
FIVE DAYS OF HELL!
October 30, 2003
Maybe a vacation away from America is the key. Well, it saves me 3 of the 5 days as I have to come back Saturday evening; however, for those with access to a TV, radio, or newspaper, it’s going to be five days of nothing but hell-raising: political style.
The national committee’s are sending millions of dollars into states like Missouri, New Jersey, Florida, and Minnesota. Al Gore is even taking money left over from his “Count The Vote” (as often as you can) funds to send to four states he deems helpful to his 2004 presidential bid.
Then there are the candidates themselves who are pumping millions into getting themselves elected. Lautenberg who just jumped in to the NJ race immediately transferred over a million of his own money but that’s feeble compared to Sanchez of Texas who has been writing checks for his bid to be governor for two years now. The most recent totals show him right at $60 million of his own funds being transferred to his political war chest.
Ads everywhere. The day before I left for Venezuela, I counted 14 commericals in a 16 minute Channel 13 late night slot. Every now and then they have to break for a program. There’s only five more days left. Maybe the Internet is the best way to get your news. It’s also the the way that you can choose what it is you want to read from some 10,000 news sources. That’s it from the Andes mountains.
SIXTEEN HOURS LATER
October 30, 2003
I finally arrived in the Andes mountains- sixteen hours after I awakened on Wednesday morning. Needless to say I have lost touch with the world- both digitally, and practically. With one eye open I am now beginning to find out what happened on the 30th of October.
It seems as though the world held together and so after I’ve had some shut-eye, I’ll awake with a little cafe-con-leche and try to figure out what’s worth figuring out. I am sure that sleeping with the window open at 6,000 ft. elevation will awaken my senses. Hasta manana.
HEADED TO VENEZUELA!
October 29, 2003
It’s a short night as a 5:00am check-in Wednesday morning is needed to make three legs to Merida, Venezuela: arriving at 6pm in the evening. Hitting three international legs with a hour between each one is always a trip to say the least; however, traveling to a nation in turmoil like Venezuela is even more of an adventure.
I’m off to the base of some of the Andes mountain ranges where the highest peaks extend sky-ward more than 22,000 feet. I will return Saturday if all goes as scheduled. So, between now and then, postings will be interesting. I’ve been set up with a local internet address so we’ll see.
I plan on concentrating on the political scene over the next week as we head to one of the most important elections that could be a “hinge” that swings the door of destiny one way or the other. There are some really exciting races and it all begins in Minnesota Wednesday night with Mondale taking the baton from the fallen Wellstone.
Then there’s Florida where “Terry, the Democratic terror” has promised “Jeb is gone and we’ll take them one Bush at a time.” Ahh, pride goeth before the fall.
Anyway, I’ve got to pack my bags and type-at-cha from Merida, if all goes as planned! ![]()
BUILT ON SMOKE & MIRRORS
October 28, 2003
You’ve heard the phrase before. Flim-flam men, snake-oil vendors, and con-artists all ply their wares with “smoke & mirrors”. The list is a lot longer than just these three but you know that. Why mention car salesmen, politicians, and market analysts?
It seems as though we’re seeing the fruit of the fraud every day as someone else is indicted but that will do little good if we don’t go to the root of the fruit. It’s not so much MEN but the SYSTEM that men have built. I could mention several systemic problems but let’s just refer to two.
First, there’s the “pro-forma” BULL that makes people think a corporation is making money when they’re not. Why doesn’t the SEC FORCE corporations to use generally acceptable standard accounting rules (GAAP) when reporting earnings instead of the “pro-forma” crap that means nothing and deceives many?
And then there’s the pension fund game. The liabilities in this area are staggering and totally out of control. John Mauldin’s article on October 25th was both riveting and scary. He has concluded that IF proper reporting in the pension fund area was done correctly earnings for the S&P500 would be 42% LESS! This is staggering.
He concludes by sayings, “The 15 largest companies on the Nasdaq (37% of it’s market value) had pro-forma earnings of $25 billion. Use GAAP principles, and take away the pension liability, and the profit is a mere $423 MILLION. Take MSFT out of the 15 and the remaining 14 have a NEGATIVE earnings of $3.5 BILLION.”
And you think we’ve started a new BULL market run? BULL! You can’t build anything on smoke & mirrors- two times in a row.
PARADIGM SHIFTS
October 27, 2003
We’re a nation that still watches the polls. We still have politicians that put their fingers in the air and test the currents before making a decision as to which way to go. Bush is challenging a lot of the conventional thinking by taking the rough road- pursuing war with Iraq. But, one different hombre a society is not made.
America got yet another wake-up call last week when white on white had to give way to black and blue. Expert after expert came before the TV cameras to spew the old mantra from ancient text books that no longer work: if they ever did. I am certain that some people died in the D.C. area because we were in search of a white man in a white van.
Low and behold, it was a black man (two) in a blue car. So much for stereo-typing. So much for “standard thinking”. The black and blue combination was stopped numerous times but no arrests. They didn’t fit the pattern. On two occasions, people at the scene reported a blue car speeding away but that wasn’t what we were looking for.
Since 9-11 the world has changed and is still going through a massive revolution. One of those revolutions is in our thinking patterns. Our paradigms are being turned upside down. How about yours?
FATE, DESTINY, & PLANES
October 25, 2003
This modern world that we seem to condense more and more each year offers us some dangerous and difficult situations. It’s one thing when a candidate decides to drop out six weeks before the election as Torricelli did in New Jersey a couple of weeks ago. It’s quite another when a candidate is killed in a plane crash eleven days before the election.
The death of Sen. Paul Wellstone in Minnesota is sending more than the normal shock waves through the emotional community that knew him. It’s sending a tsunami through the political circles. With a one seat advantage, the Democrats are now in a quandry: a major one.
Interestingly, it was two years ago that a plane brought the end to life for Senator Mel Carnahan and his wife was appointed by the Governor to fill the seat til she could run on her own this year. That seat could be lost as a close race is on.
Fate is dealing some interesting hands to the political climate, not to mention to the personal lives of those involved. I know much about that- personally, emotionally.
My first wife was killed in a plane crash delivering campaign tapes in Western Kansas for the governors race- one week before the election. I’ve often wondered how my life would be different had that plane not crashed killing her and the pilot. It’s a question Jean Carnahan has asked numerus times and one that Sheila Wellstone cannot now ask.
Fate deals many different hands and all we are asked to do is play them the best we can. Some of us have help!
LEAVE IT TO THE CHEROKEES!
October 24, 2003
Those that were in a crowd last night, or with at least one other person, were looking at each other with a blank stare. Chief Moose had just quoted a statement that the sniper wanted aired. It was, “We have caught the sniper like a duck in a noose”. Ahh, how pride goes before the fall (a better and true statement).
You see, this was an old Cherokee Indian story about a cocky rabbit that was going to lasso a duck and reel him in only to find that as the noose went over the duck’s head, he flew off carrying the rabbit with him until he lets go falling back to earth- very embarassed. The only problem here is that the noose was on the other neck.
Back on October 16th I said that I smelled more than one person involved and it was all looking all to political-religious. Obviously it was terrorism. Duh! Now the debate rages as to the role that Islam did or did not play. He wasn’t an al-Qaeda operative, but he did and does represent the evil and radical element of Islam that makes women second class citizens and kills every man that doesn’t agree with Mohammad.
If Islam is to grow in America, the moderate wing is going to have to be more outspoken against the nut-case section. By the way, John Allen Williams became John Muhammad (changing his name) after 9-11 though he had been a Muslim for 15+ years. It’s obvious he had a political ax to grind.
THE MING & JIANG SHOW!
October 23, 2003
If you wondered where the world’s priorities are, all you needed to do was to watch and read the Houston news over the last few days.
Sunday, Yao Ming came to Houston to give the Rockets their much needed Olajuwon replacement. Throngs met his plane and everywhere people stood with mouths open as the 7 foot 6 inch giant strode by.
A few days later Zemin Jiang, China’s president, rolled into town to some flag-waving supporters and also some sign-toting protesters. Hotels were embrolied in a fight over why they kept Falun Gong members out of their rooms, and other protests messed up an otherwise major publicity event.
The bottom line is after Jiang leaves town, Yao Ming stays and wins ball games for us. In the end though it’s probably Jiang that will get the last laugh. While Americans concern themselves with Iraq and North Korea, China is quietly going about preparing to take over the world in ten years. Seriously.
They are becoming a technological giant, a major financial center (they just opened the Shanghai Gold Exchange), and they just passed up Japan as being America’s #1 exporter. Why not? They have a BILLION workers who will work for rice or sushi. In fact, China is becoming the “world’s manufacturer”. After all they produce goods for 1/6th what Mexico can and 1/40th what America can.
Welcome to the NEW world- the Ming & Jiang show.
SOME DELICATE COMMENTS
October 22, 2003
I have stayed away from the so-called “D.C. Sniper” for the last three weeks but the events of today provoke me to put some thoughts in writing.
I have had a growing feeling for the last two weeks that were dealing with either an international terrorist or one who was sympathetic to their causes. I also lean to there being more than one person involved. We’re dealing with someone who is smart, very smart. Very diabolical.
But, we’re also dealing with one EVIL person: more than we can imagine. It’s bad enough to strike down individuals from the woods or from dark places without regard to who they are or where they are in life, but to kill kids is another matter. His most recent communique is that “no child is safe anywhere, anytime.” How EVIL is that?
The fact that he is asking for money and evidently large sums of money that he’d like to see electronically sent outside the U.S. only builds my suspicions about him, her, or they being international terrorists. I don’t think this is a home-grown nutcase, but time (and I pray a short amount of it) will soon tell. This EVIL will be stopped and we don’t need to waste money on a trial!

No, that’s not a typing error. If you have watched any TV of recent, your subconscious mind would immediately equate those three ZEROS to buying cars or furniture or anything.
You can go out and buy a car for ZERO down, at ZERO interest and ZERO payments for anywhere from 3 months to one year. We’re talking ZERO as in NOTHING, NADA, NONE, ZIP!
It makes consumer spending look good, it keeps the sales on a roll, it helps the economy look good, and it makes the sales volume and unit sales of the corporations that engage in it make their numbers, which keeps their stock prices up.
Here’s what it also does. It entices people to get further into debt, it increases bankruptices and foreclosures, and it means sales in 2003 for the BIG THREE will be terrible. I mean when everyone in America owns a new car, what’s the lure?
But then there’s the real problems. As with Sears, who relies on their financing sector to make overall profits, deliquencies are killing future earnings. And this from Fortune magazine. “General Motors tab for future health-care expenses over the next thirteen years is a staggering $38 billion. Worse yet is their pension plan that’s over $76 billion. At the end of 2001, the company was $9 billion short. And, GM is literally giving away cars (making no profit) to keep its factories open and to retain market share.” Now, how’s that for smart business practices?
Oh yes, we’ve got a bounce in the stock market right now but it’s built on more shell games that will take it down to under 5,000 before it’s all over. Euphoria is rampant as this bear market rally sucks in more money to be lost for the little guy who will most probably wind up with 0-0-0 in the 401 (k) account.
A TWO WEEK RUN
October 20, 2003
Bill Clinton is back in Little Rock being inducted into the Black Hall of Fame. My, my what a strange world we do live in. While Bill brags that he’s scheduled for 97 campaign events to bring in the bacon for the Democrats, Daschle is asking Bush to get off the campaign trail.
Meanwhile Bush is paying no attention to Tom as he flys from Florida, to Missouri, to wherever Air Force One will take him. What we have here are two heavyweights dialing for political dollars and a chance to rule the universe. Face it. After the fall of communism, in the late ’80s President Bill was the top dog on the world’s stage. He ruled at will for eight years. It’s now Bush’s turn and he wants to make his second two years better than his first two years by getting the Senate back in Republican control and keeping the House.
So, for the next two weeks we are going to see these two heavyweights and their minions duke it out from state to state, sometimes hitting 5 states in one day. Impossible? Nope! It’s a two week run for all the marbles- for the next 2-6 years.
THEORY OR REALITY?
October 18, 2003
I’m sorry but I have little patience with what’s been called the “bleeding-heart” liberal set that just wants peace and love. I wasn’t a “Peacenik” even in the 60’s when it was popular. Maybe it’s because I didn’t go to Berkeley in California. Maybe it had something to do with my relationship to my father. Right!
One of the ridiculous debates is whether or not the so-called D.C. sniper is a terrorist? Say what? The local authorities have put down that theory not wanting to scare people or stop people from going about life as “normal”. Really?
The whole region is now beset with fear, fright, and paranoia. Sales are down more than 50% in many shopping centers. Hotels are reporting 50-60% vacancies. This weekend, home coming games have been cancelled and a whole host of outside events. Are we searching for the perfect theory or looking at the practical results?
On the International scene the nations living in the French mindset of putting your head in the sand is being tested. Oh yes, theories about being nice, kind, and benevolent should be our way of life unless someone is banging on your door with a gun in his hand. The terrorist bombings in Indonesia, Phillipines, and Russia the last few days is a wake up call to the world. Move out of the fantasy-world theories of what a utopian life should look like, and move in to the reality that we face in this world today. We must exercise great courage and make the tough decisions that the hand we’ve now been dealt confronts us.
SHAME- SHAME- SHAME!
October 17, 2003
It used to be such a beautiful world. “Things were so simple then”, sings Barbara Streisand. Now Barbara is being lambasted for not spelling Iraq right and yesterday, she proclaimed Saddam an Iranian. Well, be that as it may, I want to go a bit deeper than what Hollywood actors or singers think. Let’s talk national sovereignity.
Should it be that whatever a nation does within their own boundaries is their business and that all other nations should butt out? If all crimes stay within national boundaries, who cares what goes on? But, if one nation LIES to another, with an intent to do harm, can we allow that?
North Korea just fessed up! They have been lying all along about not having a nuclear program. Shame, shame, shame! Can you imagine the president of a nation purposefully lying to the world?
Korea’s confession raises a couple of questions. First, why did they finally admit it? Are they looking for restoration and credibility as one Congresswoman said today? Come on! Are they so secure in their power that they could care less? Is it that they just wanted to prove Bush correct that they are a bona fide member of the Axis of Evil?
Ahh, but here’s the real question. Does N. Korea’s admission give the U.N. any clue as to what Iraq has going on? Is there anyone who really believes the statements coming out of Saddam’s mouth? Yes, he got 100% of the vote two days ago, but you didn’t believe anyone would dare risk their life and vote against him did you? Since there was no opposing candidate to vote for, what’s the point.
It’s startling I know, but nations do LIE. Could someone please forward this breaking news to the United Nations. They think Saddam is telling the truth.
