ANOTHER FLORIDA IN THE WORKS?

October 1, 2003

I am amazed that Daschle can stand before the cameras and whine that the Republicans are trying to stop the democratic process by going to court to keep a Pallone’s name off the ballot- in place of Torricelli. We need two candidates after all!

Opps, stop the presses, Pallone has decided he doesn’t want the job. The Republicans are trying to keep Lautenberg’s name off the ballot. That’s the evil strategy.

Hey, what ever happened to keeping the man who asked to run, the man who has held the job, on the ballot? It’s not the Republicans that are DOING the changing. It’s the Democrats who have felt the need to run a candidate that “might not lose”.

The N.J. law says that you can’t change riders within 51 days of the election. Many of the local districts have already printed ballots. Others have already mailed out absentee ballots. And, some districts have already received their absentee ballots back!

So, let’s be honest about this deal. Torricelli was straight-forward yesterday when he said, we MUST keep the Senate in the hands of the Democrats and since I can’t win, let’s try someone else (anyone) who can! In other words, let’s change the rules so that if it LOOKS like a party might lose a seat, they could change and run someone else at the last minute.

Really? I don’t think so. I think it’s an ill-conceived strategy that won’t work. It may get the nod of approval from the N.J. Supreme Court but I don’t think the U.S. Supreme Court will buy it. But then in this rerun of Florida-like court intervention, who knows!
