LET THE CHIPS FALL!

November 14, 2003

I’m sure you’ve heard this expression somewhere on the road of life- “Let the chips fall where they may”. In other words, it’s a statement about an action that needs or must happen regardless of what the results of that action might be.

On January 25, 1994 Mir Aimal Kasi killed two CIA employees outside CIA headquarters in Fairfax, Virginia. Somehow he got away and fled to Pakistan and then Afghanistan; however, the FBI found and apprehended him. He confessed to the crime and was convicted of murder. He is scheduled to be executed tonight at 8pm CST. in Jarratt, Va.

Gov. Warner and the U.S. Supreme Court have refused to stay the execution. Barring some unforseen event, he will take his last breath sometime around 8pm tonight. And then? Well, that’s where the lead phrase comes into play. Muslim radicals have promised to riot, kill Americans, and otherwise make our life miserable if we go ahead with his execution.

There’s only one problem with that threat. Aren’t they already making our life miserable and doing all those dastardly things? And so, let the chips fall where they may!

At 8:22pm Kasi was reported as expired from the injection. He has now paid the ultimate price.

THE STENCH OF POLITICS?

November 13, 2003

I am a student of politics and I had a double major in college: political science and history. In all of my studies it seemed that a combination of a benevolent dictatorship and and oligarchy was the best of all worlds. There is so much lost time, jockeying, and wasted energy in the democratic process.

Take the Homeland Security Bill (please). This bill-concept has been debated and discussed for a year with no results. Then, when the chips are down, the election over, the hand-writing on the wall, it sails through the House like a level five tornado through the country side. The vote was 299-121. And the Senate will be quick to pass it as well.

It also reminds me of a football game wherein nothing happens for 55 minutes. It’s three down and out, back and forth. When we get down to the two-minute drill, points go on the board quickly.

Yes Democracy does have it down-sides: it’s called politics. But, when you look at the alternatives, it isn’t all that bad. And then this thought. How much responsibility do we as the voters have? After all, as little as 9% of the voters sometimes elect local officials and when a minority of people vote, how can we complain? Maybe the “stench” is coming from the electorate as much as it is from the politicians.

HE’S BaaaaaaCK!

November 12, 2003

This mmorning authorities have confirmed that the latest audio tape is really the big man- UBL! He’s back and he’s still in his old threatening form.

The question is why wasn’t he on video? The answer is that most probably because he was banged up in the mountains of Afghanistan. Maybe it’s because there are things about him that he doesn’t want the rest of the world to know- has he had a facelift, cut his hair, etc?

Anyway, the audio tape is also suspected to have had in it “messages” to his operatives around the world as to where and when to strike next. His threat sure won’t hurt getting the Homeland Security bill passed quickly- in this lame duck session.

What’s it mean that he’s back? I think we’ll find out real soon.

THE SECOND HAT TRICK

November 11, 2003

Most people know the sports term- a hat trick. It’s when a hockey player scores three goals in a game. There’s something about a trinity- a triangle. They say the triangle has more strength than any other geometrical design. But, I digress.

I am talking 1952. I am talking the sweep, and I am talking Big IKE who swept his Republican party into control of the presidency, Senate, and House in the 50′s. I spent my high school and college days in Kansas and so I remember General Eisenhower having visited his Abilene home. Mamie was as down-home of a wife as there were. Those were the days.

You see, it’s not been since General Ike was president that the Republicans controlled all three branches of government. And, it may not be long until they do again. I am not talking House, Senate, and President, but Legislative, Executive, and Judiciary. With the first hat trick in the bag, they are now poised to get the second hat trick.

They will have to wait until November 21st though as Minnesota Independent Senator Dean Barkley has decided not to caucus with any party. So not until Talent of Missouri is set in can the Republicans control the Senate and get about appointing Judges. But, no rush, they have two years to get it done- maybe six!

VETERANS DAY!

November 10, 2003

In this season of “War on Terrorism”, it’s more than fitting to review the costs of war. It has to be a sobering thing for Bush to visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial today. He faces the possibility of being the man that has in his hands the fate of thousands of American lives.

So many pundits recklessly discuss war and the possibility of war as though it were a football game. The sacrifices to get us where we are today (living in freedom) have been immense. This national holiday where we are spared from getting any bills in the mail, was first set aside in 1926 as Armistice Day, and then Veterans Day, and a national holiday in 1938.

I have walked the trails of Arlinton National Cemetary and wept for the young lives that were ended so violently. It is sacred ground whre you can almost sense the souls of men and women speaking to you. I have felt their fear, sensed their helplessness, and grieved with their families. Most did not have a choice to fight and die; some accepted their fate with honor- to die for their country.

Watching the soldier march endlessly back and forth at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier almost stops one’s heart in time. So today, Bush experience’s all of this and then gets alone with God for direction. He’s not only dealing with a madman in Baghdad, but the lives of his countrymen- thousands of them. He needs our prayers.

A VERY DIFFERENT WORLD!

November 10, 2003

I have been saying for over a year now that since 9-11 America is no longer the nation it once was, and the world is quickly becoming a very dangerous place. We are a nation of declining freedoms from within and without. The D.C. sniper added yet another element of fear to our minds.

I think the thing that gave me the greatest insights to our changed world was air travel. I’ve been out of the country on two occasions and I have flown numerous times within our borders. I’ve not been stripped searched, but heavily fondled, patted down, and delayed. I have numerous stories that are my proof of a changed Amereica, but none like the well publicized story of Fred Hubbell. On August 1, 2002, he was boarding a plane at Hartford, Conn. The 80 year old WW II veteran got irritated when they thumbed through his wallet prompting him to ask, “What the hell do you expect to find inside my wallet, a rifle?”

He was handcuffed and threatened with some jail time. But in a world of parsing words and legal maneuverings, he was able to only face a “causing-disturbance” charge, fined $78, and set free because saying you have a rifle in your wallet isn’t the same as saying you have a BOMB in your wallet: as though either makes any sense. A wallet!

The bottom line is that the world is transforming itself, being changed, and where it will all lead no one knows. What is obvious though is that it’s a very different world that’s going to require some major lifestyle changes on our part- if we want to cope.

NOW WHAT GREENIE?

November 9, 2003

Alan Greenspan and company is pouring as much gas (printing money) on the fire as possible but it seems as though the rain (bad news) just won’t stop. Wednesday, Alan and crew dropped interest rates to historic low levels- 1.25%. We’re beginning to look way too much like Japan!

I don’t know why the Fed can’t get it in their head that you can’t have a booming market all the time. Markets have their own behavior and while man can tweak it and alter it for a season, the markets eventually run their course, much like a pendulum. Clinton and Greenspan let the pendulum swing to historic highs in the late ’90′s, so the markets must swing to historic lows as well.

The other problem with lowering rates (while Europe didn’t last week), is that we’re in danger of adding a double-whammy to the overseas investors. Not only is the stock market broke, but with low interest rates, the dollar is falling out of bed. So, what’s to keep foreigners from taking their money someplace else? Very little.

And, with foreigners owning 40% of all U.S. Treasuries, 24% of all corporate bonds, and more than $8 trillion is U.S. assets, it’s a potential financial nightmare. Add to that our appetite for more than we produce (a $1.5 trillion daily negative trade deficit), we’re headed for far more serious trouble than we think.

The solution is to move to tangible assets: gold, silver, diamonds, art, etc. In case you’ve not noticed, the smart money has been moving in that direction for 1-2 years now.

A SLAM DUNK!

November 8, 2003

What’s this? Could it be a typo? Nope! The U.N. Security Council voted 15-0 to pass a new resolution on Iraq. We’ve been hearing this discussed for nearly 60 days now. What happened to France’s objections, Russia’s stonewall, and China’s resistance? Worse yet, what happened to Lybia. Libya voting FOR it. Amazing.

Ahhh, after two months of positioning for the spoils of oil, and behind the scene bargaining, the deal got done. Believe me, there were a lot of deals and “off-sets” negotiated that we’ll not know anything about.

Then of course, one can’t help but see the handwriting on the wall. Republicans sweep to power on Tuesday, the U..N. votes yes on Friday. They used to call Clinton, Teflon Bill, but I think Bush has been given a newer, more protective version. He seems bullet-proof. He got what he wanted from the U.N. He got approval from Congress. He got the Senate. Hey, George, what else do you want? Ask and it appears to be yours, just like a slam dunk.

PS. Saddam, a word to the wise. It’s not going to go well with you. You can stall, but unlike UBL, you can’t hide, and you can’t stop #43 from doing what #41 didn’t. Got the picture? :-)

SEPARATE BUT EQUAL

November 7, 2003

The elections are over. Bush has taken no credit, but he has told the Congress that is to reconvene next week to DO SOMETHING! So, let’s get on with the other things of life. Surely something else is going on.

How about religious transition? It sends chills down my spine every time I hear of a religion running a nation. The world has seen it’s worst oppression when the church was in charge. Say what you want but history has the FACTS to back up my statement. The church ran the world for 1,000 years and it was one of our worst of times. Read Dave Davidson’s, The Soverign Individual for the terrible details.

The people of Iran can’t wait to get rid of their religious leaders. You know all about how the Taleban treated people in Afghanistan. I could go on and give you three dozen modern-day examples but why waste minutes.

I am so thankful that our founding fathers saw the need for the separation of church and state. I can’t imagine how intolerant America would be if run by Baptists, Methodists, Catholics, etc. I named four religions but there are another 7,000+ denominations that I could have mentioned.

You see It’s one thing to be religious and another to be spiritual. There are governmental divisions among families, church, and state; however, there are no divisions among the people of this world. We are all spiritual beings created by a spiritual being. While we are different in sex, education, and dispostion, we are all equal in our spiritual nature, and it is constantly calling us to Him. Deep calling us to deep.

May we heed the call. May we serve our government as spiritual beings and not as religious spirits and therein honor the separate but equal equation. Think about it.

LOOKING BACK- LOOKING AHEAD

November 6, 2003

Last week I suggested that we might be looking at the 2002 elections as the HINGE upon which the door to the future swung. Of course, the door swings both ways. The reality is that Bush set an historical marker by not just holding the House, but gaining House seats. I don’t know what category you put the Senate gain in, but it’s an historical one of major proportions.

I also said two weeks ago that you could expect a fast-track for Judges, if not faster, fastest! Committee chairmanships will change next week, the lame duck will have wings, and the political landscape is about to change big-time.

Past and present Democratic leaders will get the axe or leave: as Gephardt will announce tomorrow. He sees the handwriting on the wall. And what I see is even more dramatic for the future than what just historically took place.

I see the Democrats, feuled by the Clinton-Gore past leadership, shift to the left (a major shift) as we head to the 2004 elections. Like Jeb Bush said last night when asked what he thought of 2004, “Can I have one day off first before thinking of 2004?”

While the Republicans have a majority and can do many things that they could not for the last two years, it takes 60 votes for “real” power in the Senate (fillibusters). IF, and I believe they will, the Democrats move to the left, then Bush can get conservative Southern Democrats to side with him and he can do what he otherwise could not (having more than 60 votes).

My guess is the Democrats will veer way left, unless they move Gore, Hillary, Streisand, and several other Hollywood elites to France! :-)

ELECTION NIGHT

November 5, 2003

I am going to do something I’ve not done before. I’m going to write as the night passes. So, at 9:20pm we have what looks to be a slight Rep. trend in that Dole and Graham have won NC & SC for the Reps. Terry, the DNC chairman, who cockily proclaimed Bush as “gone” in Fla is eating crow as Jeb beats McBride. NH stays Rep. and NJ stays Dem.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - -
At 9:45pm we have the first change. With so much on the line, the first switch has come from Georgia. The Rep. challenger, Chambliss, has unseated the Dem. incumbent, Max Cleland. And, it was so good to see a Dad introduce his son and to see the son recognize God, Almighty for his victory. I’m talking about Jeb Bush of course. And even though Sanchez spent $60 mil of his own personal funds, Perry is still the Texas governor.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
At 10:00pm Arkansas has flipped to the Dem. as Pryor’s sins proved less than Hutchinsons, which puts the Sen. balance back to where it was before we began. It’s now down to four states of which three are held by Dem. which means they have more at risk.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
At 10:45pm the chances of the Rep’s. taking the Senate are increasing as it looks like Lousiana’s Senate race is headed to a run-off. Mary Landrieu can’t get a majority. Talk about money pouring into a campaign. Wow! The battle in Louisiana between now and December 7th will be historical!
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
At 11:00pm it looks like Cornyn is a winner in Texas though there are problems with balloting in Dallas-Ft. Worth. Amazingly, Allard seems to be a winner in Colorado and that leaves just three states to determine the future of the Senate: Minnesota, South Dakota, and Missouri. The Republicans only need one of the three to take control.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
At 11:30pm Colorado is retained by Allard and Rep. Just three to go. My Nov. 3 prediction was 2+ in the House and 50 Senate seats and at this hour, it lloks like that just might be the final result.
- – - – - – - – - – - – - – - – - –
At 12:45 AM (yep, AM), it looks as though Mo. will go to Talent (only 150 precincts left)and SD will go to
Thune. Minnesota will probably go to Coleman though it will be mid morning before we know that. So, I’m logging off for the early morning saying George Bush did in fact swing create history with this election!

POLITICS- Part Five

November 4, 2003

This is my last in the series of five political comments leading up to the election. Next comes the comments on the actual RESULTS!

Today was interesting in several ways. Here’s what I’m seeing and hearing. There seems to be a last-minute move to the Republican party. With so many close races, this could be critical.

Minnesota lived up to it’s independent calling by having a debate between Coleman-Mondale on the last day of the campaign and in the morning when no one is home to watch. As they were arguing with each other, Jesse Ventura appointed an Independent to fill Wellstone’s slot. What an interesting state.

While the economy is now clearly the number one priority for Americans, the Democrats don’t benefit. Most people feel that #43 has done about as well as he could under the circumstances, unlike #41 (his dad). So, the Democratic strategy of having people worry about the economy has seemingly not worked.

Again, my projections for the election was posted yesterday and that is that after the dust settles, I see the Republicans gaining a net two seats in the House and a net two seats in the Senate. In about 24 hours, we will know. And, history could be altered in many ways.

POLITICS- Part Four

November 3, 2003

This is called an “off” election year. History dictates that the party in power loses. I am going to go out on the limb, saw it off, and say that the Republican party will not lose any House seats, will gain control of the Senate, and lose the majority of governorships.

Of course I am saying this 48 hours in advance of the election and anything can happen. This is what’s being called by most pollsters as a “toss-up” election. It could come down to the “weather” making the difference. There are so many quirks. You’ve got Louisiana where it may be December before the campaign is ended. You’ve got Missouri where Carnahan may be out in November (not January). You’ve got Jesse Ventura being Jesse. And then there’s the 70-Something candidates (Lautenberg and Mondale).

My prediction is a House that is 225-210 Republican and a Senate that is 50-49-1 Republican (Jeffords being the one independent). There are about ten key Senate races and in my scenario, the Republicans will win Missouri, NC, Arkansas, Minnesota, Colorado, and SD. The big THREE are Minnesota, SD, and Arkansas meaning Mondale must lose his debate Monday morning. The illegal worker issue in Arkansas with Mark Pryor has to come off as worse than Tim Hutchinson’s affair with his secretary. And, Bush must overcome the Daschle factor in SD and thrust John Thune ahead of incumbent Tim Johnson. Ahh, politics.

PS. Jeb will win Florida and Simon will fare far better than anyone thinks in California: almost an upset. Here in Texas, Sanchez doesn’t have enough money and Kirk doesn’t have enough appeal. So, it’s Perry and Cornyn.

POLITICS- Part Three

November 1, 2003

I am writing Saturday’s report on Friday at 5:20pm Merida, Venezuela time as I will be in-flight all day Saturday. Sunday, I will start giving my predictions for Tuesday. Hey, life cannot be fun unless you can make some mistakes and fail every now and then.

So, what’s the trashy political news for the day? It seems as though that’s what it all gets down to in the last 3-4 days, especially for those who know they are behind. And, on a sad note, for whatever it’s worth, Wellstone’s pilot
had served a federal prison term for mail fraud not long ago.

Jesse Ventura was so turned off by the Wellstone pep rally that was called a memorial that he’s decided that he’s not going to appoint a Democrat to fill in for Wellstone. Jesse interprets the law that his selection will get to be there until January. Unhappy Democratic officials somehow say the newly elected Mondale gets sworn in November 19th. Doesn’t he have to WIN first?

Reno is so hot-to-trot in Florida that she’s asked a judge to bar Republican “poll watchers” from the Miami-Dade area. She feels that they will intimidate people. Oh, yes. Then there are the absentee ballots that turned up partially burned in a field in South Dakota. Man is this ever going to be a fun election.

With so many tight races, challenges are going to be all over the place. The latest polls show that there are TEN Senate seats that are just too close to call but of course I am sure that won’t hurt the networks from making an early call: even if wrong.

So much for the smut. Since part four comes on a Sunday, we’ll clean it up a bit.
