COURAGE OF THE REPUBLIC!

March 15, 2004

Greater than the question of how Bush beat Gore in 2000, is the question of the difference between a Democracy and a Republic. It is often fogotten that America is a Republic. Let me skip all the political science rhetoric and get to the behaviorial point.

Did we elect Bush to follow polls or focus groups? The Clinton administration made good use of both. Bush is no Blair, but close. You see, Blair is doing what 75% of his country does not want him to do. His political hide is on the line and many in his cabinet are ready to jump ship. But, he’s going to do what he thinks is RIGHT no matter what the consequences.

Should Bush respond to the less than 1% of the nation that is demonstrating against the war? Do we elect a president to FOLLOW the polls or to LEAD? In a Republic, the people elect men of skill and character to do what we may not have a clue about, and most often we do not!

So, Bush is laying his future as a president on the line. He is doing something that could greatly damage the economy. He is going against the grain of the international community. The risks are enormous. In essence, he’s putting everything he is and has fought for all his life on the line.

Many call it political suicide. The Dixie Chicks are ashamed that he’s a Texan. But, he IS the president and he’s doing what he feels is RIGHT: at his peril. Isn’t that why we elected him? I admire such COURAGE: it’s rare these days.

PS. And if the war begins this week, the Academy Award crowd will have yet another reason to be mad at Bush. How dare him stage a war in their prime time!

PLAYING THE “NAME” GAME?

March 13, 2004

Today we have lost track of that important principle of “naming” things, people, and events. In days far, far away, we used to give a name to a person that described their calling, purpose, and destiny. The principle was so important to God that He re-named several people after He’d had a little talk with them on their calling.

The abortion industry and Planned Parenthood have not forgotten the principle. So, when thinking about a name for their cause, they came up with the tag, PRO-CHOICE! Hey, how could one live in America and not be for CHOICE? And so even though PRO-LIFE sounds admirable, there’s a lure to PRO-CHOICE that one cannot deny.

And now to today’s news. You keep hearing from the liberal media and Congress the word UNILATERAL (action). Doesn’t that word mean going it ALONE (another phrase)? How can America be taking unilateral action with another 30 some nations at our side?

Then there’s that word RUSH! How can Bush be rushing to war, as the liberal left contends, when we’re on the 18th resolution since 1991? I’d hate to see slow! And how about them “FREEDOM” fries (a new name for FRENCH fries) on Capitol Hill.

And then we have our PEACE demonstrations where windows are broken, cars are burned, and people are attacked. Peace demonstrations you say? And why is it their Reuters news service refuses to label the 9-11 perpetrators, TERRORISTS? They simply say it is because on man’s freedom fighter is another man’s terrorist. Think about it. Well, maybe NOT!

The next time you hear a tag or label out on something ask yourself the question. Are we playing the NAME….. “CARD”? Ahh, another word, but I must go for now.

JACQUES “IRAQ” CHIRAC

March 12, 2004

Bush said one week ago that it was time for the U.N. to vote and “show their cards” as to how they stood on Iraq and Saddam. Well, the vote has now been postponed three tiems and it may never even come to pass; however, France has already laid their cards on the table- face up!

When Tony Blair submitted his offer to Iraq on a second resolution Thursday, he got an answer from France before he did from Iraq- NON! Hey, what IF Saddam had said OUI? The chances were slim but for France to say NON to any and every proposal tipped their hand (as though they were skilled gamblers, eh?).

Some of the press is now changing Jacques Chirac’s last name to Iraq. Several TV stations are even showing pictures of the younger Saddam and Jacques embracing each other. Many even think Jacques sees himself as the mediator between the Anglo-Saxons and the Arabs. I am sure that we’re going to find out a lot more than the fact that France has been supplying Saddam with missile parts.

So, Thursday was a day that began with the news that several military leaders within Iraq were secretly going to surrender and the stock market took off like an Al Samoud rocket. The day ended with speculation that Saddam was considering a pre-emptive attack on America. To that thought came the possibility that the U.S. would initiate selective attacks even before all-out war.

What a world! C’est la vie!

WILL “VETO” FOR MONEY!

March 11, 2004

If you live in Houston, I am sure you’ve seen the various signs: “Will work for money” and even “I can’t lie, I want a beer”. Why can’t France just step up to the plate and be honest. They will veto the war with Iraq because of their 741 existing contracts with Iraq, lucrative oil trade agreements, and illicit weapon sales.

Ahh, but let me lighten up on poor ole France. The fifteen nations on the Security Council are set to vote Friday- maybe. My guess is that Bush will get the nine votes, and only France will veto. I think when push comes to vote, Russia will abstain. If the nine aren’t there, then war if even quicker. What I do know, as I said yesterday, there’s too much emphasis on this fifteen which makes it look like the US has lost Europe.

Let me give you a brief history review of the old and new Europe. The UK, Spain, Denmark, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, Macedonia, Croatia, Portugal, Bosnia, and Montenegro are all with the US. Either leaning to us or neutral (but, not with France or Germany) are The Netherlands, Estonia, The Czech Republic, Slovenia, Slovakia, Ireland, Austria, Findland, Serbia, Switzerland, and Norway. My latest count says it’s 26-2 in favor of the US.

Rumor has it that 30 of the 100+ UN Inspectors are now out of the country with the other 70 not too far behind. It’s not just a poker game- the stakes are much higher than that. Should France stay the stiff-necked nation that they are, they become the ones going it alone.

Maybe between now and when the vote is taken, they could adopt a new sign. How about, “Will Abstain For Common Sense.” Et alors, peut-etre pas.

TURKEY TRUMPS TRUFFLES!

March 10, 2004

Now the question is will America have to go it alone in order to save Tony Blair from British bravado? If there is no second resolution, Blair-boy is between a rock and a hard place and Bush will bail him out.

Kofi Annan has cautioned America that to go to war without Security Council approval would be illegal. So, is he saying that the UN charter trumps the U.S. Constitution? I think he is, and I think Bush said last Thursday what he thought about that issue.

I mean, should our future be dependent upon what Angola thinks, how Guinea lines up, or how Cameroon feels? It could come down to that. But while we’re talking UN and it’s viability, legality, let me ask this question. What in the “Sam Hill” is France doing as a permanent member of the UN Security Council?

As Portugal’s leader said when asked why he was supporting the US position instead of France, “If Portugal was invaded, I couldn’t count on France to help me, but the US sure would.”

Listen, none of the five permanent mebers is a Muslim nation. With 1.2 billion Muslims in the world, they need a voice, and with Turkey being 98% Muslim, why don’t we replace France? Turkey has 10 million more people than France. Turkey has an army TWICE the size of France. And, they aren’t afraid to fight!

So, it looks to me as though we need a change in the Security Council permanent membership. We need to get rid of those ascomycetous fungi! Looks to me like Turkey trumps Truffles!

THE AXIS OF NON, NYET, & NEIN

March 9, 2004

What a day Monday turned out to be. What a week we’re going to have as well. Bush worked the phones, Powell did the glad-handing, Rumsfeld kept a low profile, and Tommy Franks is on his way to Qatar on a one-way ticket.

All forces poised to attack Iraq changed to Zula time, which is something done most often just days before a war. And rumors were flying out of Baghdad. Saddam was setting explosives at Northern oil wells. A new illegal bomb was discovered and the question of those drones was the subject of much behind-the-scenes jaw-boning at the UN.

But, the big news of the day had to be the triune response from our “allies”? The Frence said NON to any new plan. The Russians said NEYT to any war. And Germany stood by their long-standing NIEN to any conflict in Iraq. Oh yes, to further the intensity of the rhetoric, German Deputy Defense Minister, Walter Kolbow claimed that “Bush is not a partner, but a dictator.” He evidently missed out on the Dale Carnegie course.

So, will this axis of NON, NYET, and NIEN hold up? Well, we will know soon enough. The NIEN has no veto, and I suspect the NYET will abstain. But that NON? Well, since France is the only NATO member who does not also join in the military portion of the Alliance and since the NON is always against anything America is for, I’d say the NON is about to be a non-persona with Washington. Seriously, NATO is due a major face lift. Maybe even the whole world!

FRENCH TOAST (Part 2)……….

March 8, 2004

I’m leaving out the German waffles as this follow up to yesterday’s post. Germany is not a permanent member of the Security Council, does not see itself as leading the world (Hitler cured them of that), and Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder will not be leading Germany very much longer anyway.

France on the other had aspires to be the counter-balance to US power. The French ego just can’t be satisfied. But, as I said in my last commentary, the harsh anti-American stand has gone too far and shown to the other EU nations just what the French motive is. In the showdown that will go on this week, France stands to lose it all. If the US gets the nine votes and France is the only one to veto, it’s sour wine baby. Or, they could abstain and show their yellow under belly.

America is a good nation: not perfect by any means. What we are doing is right. We are a nation that more often than not fights for those who cannot fight for themselves. It was Edmund Burke who said, “All that evil needs to have happen to be successful, is for good men to do nothing.” That would be France.

The true second super-power is not France and never will be: that role goes to China. So, on Sunday France sent Foreign Minister, Dominique de Villepin to Angola, Guinea, and Cameroon to do some arm-twisting. It’s a major save-face tour. My opinion, it will fail. We may know as early as Tuesday.

Hans Blix’s failure to talk about the true smoking gun (the UAV) last Friday has provided Bush with the achilles heel he needed. It seems to me that we are seeing a man (Bush) stand for what’s right against all odds. And the powers that be are going to reward him and expose the French ego. Worse than having egg on their face, France’s desire to play center-stage on world affairs is now TOAST: not French toast, but BURNT TOAST!

French Toast & German Waffles?

March 6, 2004

Okay, let’s talk about what is really going on with France and Germany which has nothing to do with the UN, nor the Security Council. You see, it’s all about the EU!

France has always had aspirations of grandeur and Jacques Chirac is nothing more than Charles de Gaulle II. Both men have wanted to make France a national power. There’s just one problem- France needs to stick to wine!

Most European nations have looked upon the EU (European Union) and the new currency, the Euro, as the answer to America’s economic dominance. I mean after all, they have more people than America. The concept is a good one but there’s one problem. France is looking at the EU as more than an economic plan.

France wants to carry out their dreams of power by turning the EU into a French EU. When Chirac belittled the East Europeans last week for supporting America, note that his threat was entry into the EU. France has drawn a line in the brie and they expect everyone to follow suit.

What the Iraq flap has done is to expose France’s true motivation and plan. Poland has no interest in Iraq or siding with the U.S.:however, they have less interest in a French culture- and neither does Bulgaria or any of the other East (new) European nations. When France and Germany refused to help NATO partner Turkey last week, the handwriting was on the wall.

Unfortunately France’s grand plans are now TOAST and watch for the Germans to start to WAFFLE on their anti-US stance soon.

REVIVING THE IDES OF MARCH?

March 6, 2004

Okay, I’ve heard enough! Blix gave his monthly Goldilocks report (not too hot or cold, just right for continued inspections). France gave it’s reasons for not wanting a war. The UK gave its reason that continued inspections is a waste of time.

And, some church leaders are once again circulating a need for a 40 day fast based on a four month old hoax in which an Al-Qaida informative (Mohammed Al-Asuquf) tells of seven bombs already in America. Ho-hum.

Back in reality-land it seems that history is about to repeat itself. In 44 BC Spurria (aka Bush) whispered to Caesar (aka Saddam) that he should stay away from the Senate (aka Iraq) on the 15th of March because there were some out to kill him.

In his arrogance, Caesar went anyway and upon arriving at the Senate says to Spurrina, “The Idea of March are come” to which Spurrina says back to Caesar, “Aye, but they have not yet gone”. Will the Ides of March once again come to reality?

So, now the debate on the future of the EU begins! Say what? Yep, I’ll get to that next. It’s not the UN that’s at stake in all this but the EU! Chew on that one.

SWORN TO PROTECT THE PEOPLE!

March 5, 2004

As George Bush was addressing the nation regarding Iraq Thursday night, UN peacekeepers were reporting that US Marines were cutting the fence between Kuwait and Iraq.

There has been much discussion as to when the war would begin. A more practical question would be that one in the past tense. The official war will probably begin some time next week; however, the unofficial war began September 11th, 2001.

Our planes have been bombing the Northern and Southern no-fly zones with frequent intensity. Iraq has been shooting at our pilots and downing our drones. God only knows how many terrorists have been transferring WMD’s out of Iraq to ports in the West.

Today, the UN begins it’s umpteenth discussion about what to do with Iraq after Hans Blix gives his latest Goldilocks report: not too hot, not too cold, just right for everyone! Then after a day of banter both before the cameras and in private, all will retreat for further weekend discussions as they head for a vote next week.

Whatever that outcome might be, Bush made clear that he is not bound by it. He said it about as straight-forward as one can. He took an oath to defend the constitution. As president, his primary role is the national defense. His words were, “I don’t need permisssion to protect America.” I think everyone who was listening got his “Texas drift”. And if not he simply said to the UN, “Show us your cards.” Wonder if they know what that means.

LATER GATOR

March 5, 2004

Last night about this time (6pm), I said that there would most probably be a Bush TV statment soon. Well, it’s here.

So, I am going to wait to hear what he has to say and then I’ll write my commentary for Friday, later tonight. Hope you can catch his speech at 7pm CST.

YOU LYING DOGS YOU! YES YOU!

March 4, 2004

John Stuart Mill called it Utilitarianism: Jeremy Bentham had a similiar concept without a name. Post-moderns simply have a phrase that says, “if it feels good, do it”. In Christian Ethics, it goes by the moniker of “graded absolutism”. Are you still reading?

Here’s where I’m going. I literally read dozens of web sites every day, from Japan to Malaysia, Pakistan, Kuwait, England, and points both North and South. Note, I no longer have France or Germany on my short list. If one reads four sites on the same subject, you will probably come away with eight theories.

What I have noticed recently is the statement that I think was first authored by Samuel Johnson when he said, “The first casualty of war is TRUTH”. It’s similar to the “All’s fair in love and war” philosophy; as we recently found out in the Clara Harris trial.

Here’s the point. Don’t believe anything you hear, especially from the military about the potential for war. Tommy Franks isn’t going to tell you what’s going to happen with the 20-some ships off Turkey’s coast. Rumsfeld is going to say one thing meaning another. Powell is going to try and deceive the UN Friday. Bush will just keep a tight lip since he’s such a model Christian; although that “graded absolutism” concept will absolve him.

But, one day after I said war would most probably begin (March 4th), Bush is said to have decided it’s a GO within a few days. Don’t believe much of what you hear over the next few days. War necessarily means much is purposed dis-information! You lying dogs you! Yes, You. Yes you are!

STOP THE PRESSES- NEWS FLASH!

March 3, 2004

I know that you are going to find this hard to believe but, the British human shields have left Baghdad and are now back in England. They said that the trip that was paid for by Iraq (imagine that) was full of lies. They were concerned about their SAFETY? Say what? Aren’t human shields supposed to not care if they live or die?

You say Saddam lied?

Then there’s this. France has issued an arrest warrant for Khalid Mohammed. Now? After he has been arrested already? It seems the French like to wait until the German troops are marching through Paris or until Saddam has nuked the nations before doing something. Hey Chirac, how about a little PREVENTIVE action, sil vous plais!

Oh yes. I think N. Korea now has our attention. Shadowing one of our spy-planes has caused us to send 24 long-range bombers (B-1 and b-52) to Guam- just in case. If you thought we could not chew gum and walk at the same time, just keep it up N. Korea and you’ll find out Bush is not a rhinestone cowboy. And, Bush just turned down the Pope’s request to abort a war with Iraq. Maybe the Pope isn’t the final authority- in politics and secular world affairs.

And the Democrats can no longer use the we can’t fight al-Qaeda and Saddam at the same time. They need to find a new attakc.

Finally, Blix will give his appease everyone speech to the UN (again) this Friday. After that, Bush will test the waters to see if he has the nine votes needed to pass a resolution. If he doesn’t, foget the second resolution, and Hello Baghdad!

PS. Did I mention Wacko Jacko’s $150,000 payment to have a voodoo doctor do in Speilberg and others? Read all about it in Vanity Fair.

CAN WE ……….”TALK TURKEY”?

March 2, 2004

The religious crowd that have been forecasting a war beginning on Monday, March 3rd, based on several numbers of “3s” have missed it. I also expect that my February 18th mention that March 4th would be the best option for our military due to the weather and NEW moon will not happen either.

So, I imagine when the clock strikes midnight tonight, on Tuesday, March 4th, there will be no magical slipper and I will be 1-1! Now, if I could convert that to a baseball batting avg., I’d be a multi-millionaire. Alas, that’s not the case. So, let’s talk a little “Turkey” here.

The war is now probably just a few days off, maybe a week, because of the Turkey rejection of our request to base 62,000 troops in Turkey and form a “Northern” front. And of course being a democracy, Turkey took two weeks longer than the US wanted to just say NO! And it cost Turkey- BIG TIME. The local currency dropped 5% and the national stock market dropped 12.5% Monday! Ouch!

Who needs the mess of Northern Iraq anyway? The Kurds don’t like the Turks and they’ve threatened war. The Iranians have moved 1,000 troops into NE Iraq, and the Iraqi Sunnis are battling the Shite’s. Hey, forget the North!

What we do know is that our FREEDOMS are no longer “self-evident” and that we must be pro-active: preemptive! And while war will not break out on the 3rd or the 4th, it’s just around the corner. And, not for religious voodoo reasons, but for practical political and military ones.
