MY PRESIDENT A TOP GUN!
April 30, 2004
I’m just going to brag on the forty-third president of the United States: a person I am proud to call MY PRESIDENT! I loved Kennedy and I was even more fond of Bobby. I thought Reagan was great. Number forty-one was okay.
It’s number forty-three though that makes me smile, makes my chest stick out another inch or so. I am so proud of George W. Bush. Watching him land on the USS Abraham Lincoln was a very special moment for me. Seeing him get off the plane in his fighter-pilot suit with helmet tucked under his arm was awesome.
Here’s a man who truly loves the men and women of the armed services and they know it. His speech Thursday night? So-so. But, his jumping in to the crowd and shaking hands for as long as he did was great. The synergy between the Commander-In-Chief and his troops is more than obvious.
And his quoting Isaiah at the end was, well, just too much for this man who loves the same God. So, is there any doubt where I stand? I am amazed that the most powerful man in the world is still humbled before His God and mine
Did I mention he was a Top Gun also? ![]()
OKAY RON, COUNT ME IN!
April 28, 2004
As a political science and history major in college, I must admit that it’s taken me a long time to come to the conclusion that Ron Paul (R-Texas) came to years ago. I am either for a wholesale realignment of the U. N. or we pull out of it.
Yesterday’s addition of Cuba to the 53 member Human Rights Commission wasn’t the straw that broke the camel’s back. When you have nations like Syria, Zimbabwe, China, and Libya already on it, why not Cuba as well?
I think what did it for me was Jacques Chirac’s call for a E.U. military alignment. We already have NATO so why an E.U? The answer is simple. France wants to run something, anything, everything! Listen, they belong to NATO but they do not belong to the military defense portion of NATO. I can imagine what a E.U. Defense League would look like. The King has no clothes!
Having nations on the critically important Security Council like Cameroon, Angola, and Guinea decide the fate of the U.S. is a little much for me as well. I can appreciate the protective measures in our constituion for the minority opinions; however, I think the U.N. abuses the concept.
Listen, what France is attempting to do with the E.U. or a portion reminds me that ALLIANCES are for a season. Just look back over the last century. Look at the many wars and see how alliances are a matter of changing values. It appears to me that our values no longer match those of France or the U.N.
If we must stay a member, let’s surely not submit any major issues to the “debating fraternity” that has no backbone. So, okay, Ron Paul, sign me up as in support for your H.R. 1146- our withdrawal from the U.N.
A MILITARY MAKE-OVER!
April 28, 2004
The two most conservative institutions in the world are usually the military and the church. Both are traditionally well planted in concrete mindsets and paradigms. You would think that the military at least would have to be on the cutting edge, but history shows that to not be the case.
We have in the “Don” (as in Rumsfeld), a radical who tells it like it is, and goes against most political correctness. He’s out to reform our military and he’s made his point(s) in Afghanistan and Iraq. He might get another chance or two in Syria and Iran before it’s all over.
Right now, he’s cleaning house with the Army. In spite of the political restraints, he’s doing it “his way”. Frank Sinatra would be proud. Now that we’re in Iraq, he’s moving our troops out of Saudi Arabia. We have 112,000 troops in Europe at some 499 installations. France is looking to replace NATO with their own defense, so let’s get out of Dodge.
Nearly half of those 112,000 troops are in Germany, and after their stand on Iraq, why not move them to a more friendly nation. And, while he’s at it, expect him to pull some 30,000 troops out of S. Korea. After all, we’ve spent more than ONE TRILLION on our troops in S. Korea since that war.
When he steps down as Secretary of Defense one day, maybe he can turn his attention to the church. God knows the church could use a little “straight-talk”.
MUSLIM DEMOCRACY?
April 27, 2004
Some 250 leaders from the various Iraqi political factions, and there are many, agreed to attempt to form an interim government thirty days from now. The term that Washington keeps floating around is what they call a “Muslim Democracy”. This of course means it will be different from an “American Democracy”. Duh!
Just how do you bring together all those various tribes, the Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, and Arabs of every sort? Iran is trying to set up it’s form of “Shiite Democracy”. After seeing pictures of men beating themselves with chains, striking their hads with swords, and otherwise acting completely barbaric and uncivilized (and religious), I am sure that we need a separation of church and state.
My money is on the fact that an interim government will not be set up in thirty days. People really want WORK first. People need money so they can buy food. People need to see their kids educated and in a safe environment. There are a lot of things that come before Democracy. Did I mention that there’s an infrastructure to be rebuilt?
My sons is currently somewhere in the Iraq desert near Basra building a pipeline while keeping an eye out for terrorists, beating off the flies, and wiping sweat from his brow. Like the Iraqi’s, he just wants the basics: water, plumbing, a shower, a hot meal, and a little air conditioning. If all goes well, he’ll return by July 4th. But, knowing the Army and the things that need to be done in Iraq, his return may not happen- much like the proposed interim government.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SADDAM!
April 26, 2004
It’s probably not the kind of birthday that he had in mind and the celebrations are nothing like in years past; however, all accounts say that he’s alive to celebrate number 66.
Thirteen of his friends were not able to attend the festivities. Those not in attendance were two queens, eights, sevens, sixes, fives, fours, and one nine. Those thirteen were taken off Tommy Frank’s deck of cards.
Where ever Saddam is, he’s still holding all his Aces and Kings. Tariq Aziz has confirmed he saw Saddam after both major strikes. Only being the eight of spades, I’m not sure Aziz knows all that much.
The U.S. can peddle the line that we don’t care about Saddam and his birthday because it’s the “regime” that we wanted to dismantle. It’s a weak “line” at best. Until we find one of those Aces, one of those Kings, the game is still on. The fears are still there. The questions still haunt.
So, where ever you are Saddam, enjoy your birthday, eat all the cake you can because I think this will be your last birthday.
Then there’s this thought, wouldn’t it be a great strategy to allow Saddam and UBL to be on the run for a year or so? And wouldn’t it be a political boost to capture both of them , say in September or October of 2004?
Ahhh, if we only could wish some things true. So, go ahead, make a wish, and blow out the candles.
DEMOCRACY OR THEOCRACY?
April 25, 2004
Many on the conservative right would love to see more religion in government and if they had their way, they’d trash democracy and install a theocratic government.
The battle shaping up now in Iraq is over the same issue. Will their be a Shiite-led government, run by Mullahs, Immans, and other religious leaders? Will Iraq be another Iran? It would be an improvement but while we’re remodeling the house, why not make some major improvements to the nation.
History is full of examples that say state and church should not be one. America is very experienced with the church-state seperation issue. There’s a reason that God set up two governing bodies. There’s a reason God gave the Spriit to the church and the sword to the state. Educating the Arab world in that direction will not be easy.
After all, they still march to a different drummer. Democracy is as foreign to them as is the concept of grace and mercy. Then again, we have many in America who seem to know little about grace and mercy, but that’s another story, for another day.
RECAPTURING SOVEREIGNTY?
April 23, 2004
One of the books that impacted me the most 20 years ago was Alan Toffler’s, Future Shock. It was a wake up call to the future. Then about six years ago, it was James Davidson and Lord Rees-Mogg’s book, The Sovereign Individual, that caught my fancy.
Basically Davidson’s book was a futuristic book, like Tofflers’, but it dealt with just one issue. The issue was how computers would hamper the future ability of governments to collect taxes and control people- a GOOD thing. The ultimate end of all government is to CONTROL people. It does not begin as an evil thing, but knowing the nature of man, history has shown that to be the end game.
There is an evil though that’s greater than what Davidson spoke of and that’s the potential “universal government”. It’s not that the U.N. is completely incompetent, other than in humanitarian areas, but that they want to rule this planet and take away nation-state sovereignty.
Proposals have already been put forth for a world-wide tax: just the beginning of such action. I cast my vote with Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. He has put forth H.R. 1146 to pull the U.S. out of the U.N. I know it’s not expedient for Bush to do it, maybe. But, in principle, I agree with the bill.
The world is slowly headed to having the U.N. run the life of everyone and unless we do something soon, we’ll lose the sovereignty that all nations cherish. After all, we don’t needed another “layer” of government on top of our existing government. Another “matrix”? No thanks. I’m for recapturing individual and national sovereignty now!
SARS SENSATIONALISM OR WHAT?
April 22, 2004
Just when the war was ending and you thought all was well in the world, along comes yet another thing to keep us up tight and filled with fear. We still have UBL and Saddam out there somewhere; however, SARS is the new scare.
What began as a cover-up in China has now blossomed into a full-blown epidemic that some are saying will exceed AIDS by far. One prominent doctor has said that one BILLION people could come down with the respitory ailment in a little more than a year. By comparison, only 80 million people have come down with AIDS in the last fifteen years.
AIDS moves slowly, is trackable, and we’ve come up with life-lengthening antidotes for those that become infected. SARS is moving at lightning speed and it’s mutating as it goes, redefining itself.
Toronto is now off-base for all travelers and their economy is tanking. Major League Baseball doesn’t know what to do with the problem. People are leaving the city in droves. International air carriers are feeling the bite in passenger drop-offs. And they thought high fuel costs were a problem!
So, is this just a blip on the radar screen? Will there just be a few hundred deaths? Or, will we all join Michael Jackson and dawn masks as we go about our daily lives? Sars- sensationalism, or serious stuff? We’ll soon know.
PS. The Singapore Hyatt’s occupancy has dropped from 95% to 10% says an ExxonMobil manager.
DECLARING SEMI-VICTORY!
April 21, 2004
Sometime this week, Tommy Franks is going to make public what the world has known for sometime now: we won the WAR in Iraq. There’s still a lot of minor fire-fights but the Saddam regime is history. We can declare semi victory.
The question now is can we win the PEACE? Winning the war was a three week ordeal while winning the peace might be a three year ordeal. Then there’s this nagging problem with the ex-regime head, Saddam. Where is he or his body parts? Only the Hollywood left and the journalists thought we might have a tough fight of it.
So the Democrats and the liberals have egg on their face. It could easily be transferred to the Republicans in an election year if the populace aren’t interested in a democracy. If they want a theocracy, how can we stop it? You can lead an Arab to water but you can’t make him into a capitalist, bottling the water and selling it at a profit.
In a little less than a month Matrix II comes out and we will wonder again as to what’s real and what’s not. Is Democracy the real thing? Can a Muslim be partners with a Christian? Can a Sunni even work elbow to elbow with a Shiite? Can the Kurds scratch out a homeland between Turkey and Iran?
In this Iraqi mosaic that the U.S. is trying to knit together really possible? Are there powers and principalities that natural man cannot touch let alone manage to control? So, when Tommy Franks says we’ve won later this week, you have to remember that he’s talking about the small part of the endeavor that was a forgone conclusion.
The real battle is on the horizon, or is it just another layer, another matrix?
WILL THE REAL PERSON STAND UP!
April 20, 2004
It’s hard to tell a good politician from a bad one. Of course I am making the assumption that there are GOOD ones. Yes, few as they may be, there are.
Coming from life with a Christian perspective, I am always looking for that fundamental core value piece of data that tells me who the REAL person is. A politician can say lots of things, but show me the check book! The check book? Yep!
You see, by looking at what a person buys, spends, or invests in tells me all I need to know about the person or politician: even without their PR person on hand. In the last presidential campaign we had two candidates “claiming” to be Christians. Okay, so you go to church, big deal! Isn’t it in a politicians best interest to be seen coming out of a church on a Sunday with Bible in hand? We saw that scene so often with Bill & Hillary.
But, I digress. Back to the last presidential campaign. Which candidate was really a Christian? Well, Gore made some $197,699 as V-P and he gave charity 10%? Not on your life. He didn’t tithe? Not only did he not tithe, he gave a measly $353 to charity (according to his income tax report).
On the other hand Bush earned $770,000 last year and gave $70,000 to churches and charity. So, who’s the real Christian here?
Did I mention Bible-carrying Hillary Clinton is not making her 2002 IRS filing public. She’s not legally bound to, but I wonder why she’s not doing it? The senior Senator from New York , Charles Schumer, is making his IRS report public. The Junior Senator is too much like the past President I’m afraid. It’s all show and give me the dough!
PS. V-P Cheney earned $945,000 and gave $122,000 to charity. ![]()
BACK TO THE FUTURE- AGAIN!
April 19, 2004
Easter is behind us, the seven POW’s have had their triumphal return, and it’s Spring. It’s too late to plant anything of the garden variety- in Houston. So, let’s go back to the old thing we shook off our backs about two months ago: the U.N. Security Council.
It’s called deja-vu all over again. The news of old will be the news of the future. We’re not quite ready for national politics or the economy to take center stage. As badly as the Democrats would like to make that the main meal of the day, it’s just not going to happen- yet.
We’ve got to deal with France in more ways than economic boycotts. What do we do with Germany & Russia? All three nations have unique interests that will be masked as international concerns for Iraq and stability in the Middle East. Yeah, right! So, it will be back to the U.N. and the fun and games of international politics. Back to the Security Council where SYRIA has a seat. And, we’re supposed to take this UNSC stuff seriously?
The U.S. is the 800 pound gorilla which gives the U.N. validity in times of crisis. The U.S. is going to be more occupied with getting the lights on, having the water run, rounding up more bad guys from the deck of cards, and securing future air bases in Iraq. Bush doesn’t have time to mess with the small stuff.
But, mark my word. You’ll see more and more correspondents reporting from the U.N. and less from Iraq. It’s a road we’ve traveled recently and one we’ll be more careful about traversing in the future.
PS. Did I mention we’ve got to deal with France? ![]()
CELEBRATING EASTER!
April 18, 2004
Very few people know the real traditions of Easter. For many, it’s a time of hunting eggs and eating candy. A local church just had an easter egg hunt for the public placing 38,000 eggs out for the cheering crowd.
But, ask a person WHEN we celebrate it or other details and you get a blank stare. Why April 20th, 2003? The Council of Nicaea in 325 AD set the rule that we follow today. Easter is to be celebrated on the first Sunday following a full moon after the vernal equinox. Say what?
Lots of people head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and Fat Tuesday but few know that it’s on that date that the Lenten season begins (46 days before Easter). Unfortunatley a lot of today’s Easter celebrations (bunnies and eggs) have more to do with pagan customs and traditions than Christian. I won’t go into all the details and the pagan festival of Eastre.
For me, celebrating Easter means going back to my roots and foundation. Before the earth was formed, God had me in mind and He knew what a sorry soul I’d be if left to my own vices. So, he gave me His Son, Jesus Christ and an awesomely powerful Holy Spirit so that I could compete with forces greater than myself.
On Easter I will remember once again the real reason to celebrate Easter: the resurrection Of Jesus Christ and the overcoming of physical death. I will also share my day with family, relatives, and break bread for the 26th year in a row at my wife’s parents home: yet another anchor and foundation to my life.
THE DAY IN BETWEEN
April 17, 2004
It seems that all of the attention goes to Friday and Saturday in the Christian world. It’s GOOD Friday, and it’s a RESURRECTION Sunday. So, what do we do with Saturday?
Exactly!
What do we do between life and death? What are we doing with our lives in this twi-light zone between unknown worlds. Isn’t that really the question?
Make it even more personal. What are you doing TODAY? What’s in your life that is not only meaningful to the world, but to the Creator of it as well? Will we be found faithful in both Kingdoms at the end of the day- today?
And isn’t it equally true that this one Saturday of the year is much like the other three-hundred some days of the year in which our choices say so much about who we are, and who we are not?
FROM TGIF TO TGIGF! (Add a G)
April 16, 2004
Well, we’ve arrived at another Friday. It’s TGIF time in most of the world; however, for some we get to add another “G” this Friday. It’s more than “thanking God” for it being a Friday. It’s a special thank you God for it being a GOOD FRIDAY!
Until the 4th Century, the Christian world only celebrated Christ’s resurrection on Sunday, but after that the whole week started to take on a special meaning. There was Palm Sunday, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, and of course Good Friday.
Now tell me, what’s GOOD about Jesus Christ being crucified? How do we “celebrate” such an event? Well, certainly not like we do the other TGIF’s. This once a year TGIGF, is a day to have thankful hearts because we know the end of the story. We know how this death will end- In VICTORY for all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord.
It is in Jesus’s TRIUMPH over death that we can find confidence for our own little (and large) struggles. He was mocked, abandoned by His friends, betrayed, and humiliated. Haven’t we all been there at some time? It’s a tough table to eat from, but ii provides the nourishment of everlasting life.
So, as we experience yet another TGIGF, may we be thankful to have lived another year. May we have grown in wisdom, mercy, and understanding of the price that’s been PAID for us. He paid the TAB on this Friday, so why don’t you leave Him a good TIP this Sunday (that would be over and above the the 10% of course)!
