MULTI-COLORED GLASSES
May 16, 2004
Last week I taught a class on perspectives. And I am reminded once again that our worldview (1 word) is determined by our world viewed (2 words). I am also of the conclusion that everyone sees the world totally different than the person next door.
The case that brings this commentary to my fingers is the difference between California and Indiana. I know, I know. Day and night!
When it comes to education, you can really find yourself in a cat-fight. You see, the state has a major vested interest in controlling our children as much as educating them. Over a century, the public school system has gone from educating-controlling our children from 100 days a year to 180 days a year. And, the goal is year-round control.
School districts in Oakland, California recently said it was okay to bus kids to Sacremento to protest against cuts in educational state funding: on a school day. It was an “educational event” of course, not political.
However, last week when Brianna Tull sang in the Indianapolis Children’s Choir for a visit from George Bush (#43), she got an “unexcused-absence” and all “D’s” for the day with no make-ups allowed. Her parents had already notified the school that she would be out. I think Brianna will remember that day far more than any other “educational day”. Or for that matter, any protest to a state house.
I guess this just proves again that we all see the world and events differently. We all wear glass from a past we’re not totally aware of, and may never be; particularly when it comes to politics.
WHAT A WORLD WE LIVE IN!
May 15, 2004
There are times when I read the headlines or hear a person speak, and just shake my head in wonderment. How did we get HERE? And where in the world are we going anyway? Have you ever gone there, been there?
Let me give you a couple of examples. Yesterday I read a survey that reported that the number two most dangerous person in a Japanese survey (60 days ago) was George Bush. Saddam was number one. Well, now that Saddam is gone, is Bush the most dangerous person in the world? Of course the French would say yes.
Then there’s this ex-prez: Jimmy Carter. He’s an enthusiastic supporter of Castro. Even when Castro is killing, jailing, and otherwise taking away human rights, he has nothing to say.
Ahh, then there’s Danny Glover. I am not sure how it is that Glover thinks Castro is so much better than Bush. Maybe it’s because he says Bush is a racist (his words) and Castro is such a nice guy.
I don’t know. Sometimes, I wonder if I know anything. Has the world gone mad and everyone missed it? Was there a revolution of ideas and no one came? Am I on the same page? Is Bush really the Anti-Christ and I’m blind to it all? Somehow it seems that the world I live in isn’t in the same solar system that others inhabit.
Houston (America), we have a problem!
PRIDE IS A PRECURSOR!
May 14, 2004
I have long been a supporter (via watching) of FOX News. It irritated me when I’d be at a hotel (the last on a Marriott in San Antonio) that didn’t have the Fox channel. Recently though I’ve become a bit disappointed as Bill O’Reilly went from Spin zone to icon nut. Hannity has always been over the top with his self-righteous “don’t touch our president” mentality. And now our morning “Friends” are touting, about every week, how well Fox News is doing compared to everyone else.
If you’re doing well, you don’t need to bring that to your competition’s attention. They know and rubbing it in only brings your demise a bit closer, sooner. But, that’s just an example of what I really want to say.
Let’s talk politics! Republicans are jaw-boning about how great things look for the Republican party as though the election were to be held next week. A recent poll showing that 66% of the public couldn’t name one presidential Democratic candidate has been bragged about all over the place.
Come on, we’re still eighteen months out. Once the primaries get here and a couple of candidates start winning the focus will be off the rest of the field, and one-two candidates will become front page material. Then there’s this thing in the summer called a Democratic Convention.
So, why flap your lips at this point Republicans? Why ask the stupid questions as to how could anyone beat Bush when we’re still eighteen months out. Give it a break. Bush does enjoy favorable ratings. His popularity is sky-high. But let me whisper this in your ears right now, Republican strategists. Pride goeth before the fall. Pride is a precursor to a curse, and you really don’t want to go there. Do you? Does anyone remember #41? Pay attention to history. Walk in humility!
LET DEMOCRACY WORK!
May 13, 2004
Governor Rick Perry said it today and I totally agree. In fact, I would be a little bit more forcefull about it. Get your tails back here to the State you were elected in, go to work, or resign!
I am talking about the 50 Democrats from the Texas House that like little children have decided to take their toys (voting machines) and go to Oklahoma. So, they don’t like the fact that they are going to lose a couple of votes. Isn’t that the way a democracy works?
They must be taking their script from the Democratic U.S. Senate. If you can’t win, if you can’t get your way, have a hissy-fit! Or in the case of the U.S. Senate, filibuster the selection of Federal judges. Shut down the electoral process.
I hope the citizens of Texas get the point here. I hope Perry does more than jaw-bone. And, I hope we can get some sanity back into American politics (was there ever any?). You win some, you lose some. But you don’t run away and shirk your duties. More than letting democracy work, GO TO WORK! You weren’t elected to vacation or hang out in Ardmore.
TAKING YOUR OWN MEDICINE?
May 12, 2004
Everyone has an idea as to what ails someone else. I am not sure it’s the oldest story, but the story of Job is close. Job had his “friends” who advised him of why he had lost wife, kids, and possessions. Who would ever want to attempt that feat?
The Six Friends (nations) of Venezuela advised Chavez on what he should do, but of course they were asked to butt out. You can always find someone to agree with your cause and give you the excuse to do what you want to. You know that, right?
But, when it comes to taking the medicine that we tell others to take, it gets a bit dicey. So, what’s the point here, Ern?
Saudi Arabia has been the hub of terrorist development and most importantly, terrorist funding. Remember 9-11? Like 90% of the terrorists were from guess where! And who has been paying all those homocide bombers in Palestine except Saddam? Yep. Saudi Arabia.
If you’ve read the recent headlines, you know that Riyadh was the site of numerous car bombings yesterday. The numbers keep changing hourly but more than 100 people were killed. By the way, less than 10% were Americans.
Maybe Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz will want to rethink America’s pulling out of his country. Probably not. Someone said it long ago. Live by the sword, die by the sword. The modern-day version is sponsor terrorism, get beaten up by terrorism. For some reason the medicine tastes more bitter when we get a dose of it ourselves.
For me, I try my best to follow the man who said live by grace and receive grace. His name was Jesus Christ of course. His medicine is as sweet as honey! Are you aware that the concept of GRACE isn’t understodd at all, isn’t even in the language, of many Arab and arab nations. Hmmmm.
COMING UNGLUED-UNTETHERED?
May 11, 2004
Bluetooth? What’s Bluetooth? It sounds like someone needs an appointment with the dentist really, really bad. Ahh, but after I got updated digitally, I made a change at home that’s just the tip of the iceberg.
You see Bluetooth is nothing more than a wireless platform for your hi-tech toys. Two years ago, I added a wireless application to our home computer network (we have four computers) that would allow me great freedom. After all isn’t freedom what we’re all about?
I can sit in any room with my laptop in hand and surf the web. I can sit on my patio in the back or go to my decked yard to the side, and amongst the trees, contemplate the energies of the universe via my laptop. Yeah right! Whatever.
Seriously though ethnographers are beginning to see some social changes as a result of our wireless opportunities. One day, nearly everything will be wireless. No biggie. A phone used to be a PLACE that one called. Now a phone is a PERSON.
Can you imagine that your watch will one day be your phone, computer, PDA, and e-mail all in one? We’re already close. A little over a year ago I dumped my phone and PDA and bought a Nokia 9290 Communicator that let’s me do all of the above, albeit slowly over regular phone lines.
The question though that’s more important is how good can it be to be totally free? Shouldn’t one be tethered to something, someone? Or, is everything meant to be UNPLUGGED?
ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT….
May 10, 2004
I know you can finish that phrase, but let me apply it to the political state of affairs for George Bush. He is flying high in the polls today but what will the polls say in 8 months? More importantly, what will they say 18 months from now when American’s go to the polls to elect a president for four years?
It’s impossible to say how things will look in eighteen months; however, there is an ill wind blowing and it’s coming from several directions.
Having won the WAR in Iraq, can the U.S. also win the PEACE? It will be much harder and a much longer proposal. It is hard to imagine that it can be anything but worse between now and then, but we’ll see.
Then there’s the economy back home. Having come off a decade of a BULL (literally and figuratively) market, it’s going to take at least a few years of a BEAR market to make the necessary corrections. Unemployment is headed UP and can interest rates do anything but head UP as well?
In order to win in November, 2004, the Bush administration is going to have to make substantial strategic plans and keep as much powder dry as possible because he’ll need it and more come 2004. It might look good now but what goes up must comes down and all that glitters is now gold.
THE TWO-EDGED SWORD!
May 8, 2004
Me? Buy French wine? Not on your life or anything else that’s French. I still like German pancakes and apple sauce though. So, am I a dyed-in-the-wool boycotter? Maybe!
Americans are causing no small problem for the French (or did they cause it) with the BOYCOTT FRANCE rhetoric. French tourism is off 50-75% depending upon the sector you look at. Hotels are offering great bargains to lure travelers back. The airlines have cut schedules and dropped other flights entirely. Wine sales? Well they are now whine sales and turning more sour and bitter by the week. I guess we have showed them, eh?
Well, this strategy has not yet run it’s course. Have you seen how fast the U.S. Dollar is tanking? Can that ALL be due to the Saudi’s selling USD$ or is there more going on here?
We have far more exposure and a lot more at risk in this tit-for-tat affair. Has anyone counted up the number of MCDonalds, Burger Kings, and other franchise outlets that we have in Europe, France? Has anyone thought to total up the goods and services that we have at risk such as Coke, Nike, cars, and the like?
And was the fact that a U.S. manufacturer had the lowest bid on an major aircraft order and lost it, to the E.U., any indication of how bitter things will get? Should Bill Gates be worried? Is Michael Dell in trouble? Forget those guys, does the sword cut both ways and if it does, what does that mean for the Dow? What does that mean for your mutual fund or IRA?
Just thinking out loud.
HOW ABOUT VENEZUELA?
May 7, 2004
Okay, let’s head South for a day and take another look at Venezuela. Much like Iraq in the sense of natural wealth (oil), the nation is a case study in poverty and mismanagement. How can a nation so wealthy in natural resources have so many people living in such poverty? Can you say DI-VISION?
The real question though is whether there will be elections in August. The nation fell into near civil war because Chavez refused to listen to the people or allow early elections. He insisted that the Constitution would not allow such an event until his term was half over- or August, 2003. Well, we’re just about 90 days away from August.
Once Chavez was able to break the strike, he then turned against the “Group Of Friends” (six nations) who were trying to broker a peace. In fact, he’s done nothing but harden his stance even more. So, why should anyone think that there will be elections in August? How about because if there isn’t there will not be a strike, but a revolution!
The OAS had brokered an April 11th referendum, but once the strike started showing signs of weakness, he backed out. Now that PDVSA is in his hands (he’s now not just president of Venezuela but PDVSA as well) he has all the resources he needs to do whatever he wants- except NOT hold an election.
So, Venezuela is in an interesting time- again. What will happen? We will know soon enough.
THE BREWING $$$ STORMS
May 6, 2004
Did you know that the job of Wall Street is to sell you stock? Are you aware that brokerage houses are made up of salesmen and women who make commissions on getting you to buy something- anything? Some are even in jail or are heading there because their greed and thirst for more money caused them to lie, commit fraud, and con you, the buyer.
Okay, so much for the history lesson. What about a look at the present and future. Currently we’re still in a BEAR MARKET and though the market has gotten back into the black for the year (all three major indexes), it’s not by much and I see red down the road.
You see, values are still bloated and our government is still playing GAMES with you, me, the economy, and world. It’s not a political game but a financial (con) game. Each year the Federal Reserve takes about 2-3% of your money away. Our government says that an ounce of gold is worth $42 but they won’t sell you any for that. On the market you have to pay $300 + $42 for an ounce of that gold stuff. It’s the only REAL stuff.
The U.S. Dollar was valued at $110 not too long ago, against other currencies, but today it’s more like $97 and headed South. So too your mutual funds, 401 (k) porgrams, and other savings- because we’re not saving, we’re spending! Wildly.
Our federal debt is sky-rocketing and our trade balance is killing us. Arab nations are pulling their money ot of our markets partly because of Iraq, and partly because they see the storms gathering on the horizon. Again, this is not becuase of a political party but because of the “systemic” scheming we’ve been involved in since 1913 when the Federal Reserve Board was illegally inacted.
PS. Read article posted under BUSINESS NEWS entitled “Dollar’s Pain” for more information.
THE MENTOR SAYS NO THANKS!
May 5, 2004
I know that this is going to really change the political scene, but we’ll just have to deal with it. There will not be TEN Democrats running for president of the United States.
Bob Graham made it official today and he served notice to the others that he had been in public life for 37 years without one incident of moral failure. No other candidate used that as a campaign positive though many feel that Lieberman fits the bill as well. Is morality a qualification for serving in public life? God forbid!
So, with “moral values” being a guage of political life, we had another potential candidate (the 10th) say he would not run. Gary Hart said that he would NOT seek the Democratic presidential nomination because, “I do not have sufficient enthusiasm for the mechanical side of campaigning.” Say what?
I think the real reason for his decision goes back to 1987 and a woman named Donna Rice. Hey, if I can remember the name, I am sure others can as well. Many say he was Clinton’s mentor and that Clinton learned well and almost made it to the tape without falling, by studying the Gary Hart lifestyle.
By the way, both Gary and Clinton graduated from Oxford and there were just too many comparisons for Gary to run for president. Or, maybe it was because of the “lack of enthusiasm”.
AN EVOLUTIONARY CHANGE
May 4, 2004
Yesterday my commentary was about the spoils of war and how much Saddam carted off. Then this morning I wake to the story that just hours before the bombs started falling, Saddam had three trucks show up at a Baghdad bank and carry off some $1 BILLION in currency.
If the story is true, it will go down as the biggest heist ever in bank robbery history. Who knows how much more will be found not only in underground storage areas but in overseas’ banks.
It’s going to take some time to change the Saddam legacy. When people have lived in a culture of corruption for as long as they have, it’s not going to change over night. The U.S. Army is finding this out. Many of the police that were hired and put on the streets yesterday morning, were arrested and put in jail themselves last night
You don’t change how a person thinks by just giving them a change of clothes or putting a badge on their chest. Those who want the U.S. to pull out immediately have no clue what they are asking for. There is one thing worse than a brutal dictatorship and that is an unrestrained anarchy.
The changes in Iraq will come slowly and over years in some ways and in decades in others. So, everyone just needs to cool their jets and let the evolutionary tides bring relief to a people that have needs beyond their understanding.
THE SPOILS OF WAR!
May 3, 2004
There has been a lot of talk recently about the peril that Clinton put the U.S. in over his Lewinsky saga. Isn’t it amazing that friends, spouses, and others didn’t have a clue; however, other governments knew of Clinton’s panderings. His use of the telephone for “phone sex” was what gave his little secret away to the foreign governments.
Scott Ritter is another one who got caught with his hands in the cookie jar. The self-proclaimed “know-it-all” who was getting press almost every day until one of his secrets came to light. He was caught in a police sting luring under-age girls into his lair. The former U.N. weapons inspector received a lot of attention because he did one of those “over-night” swings in beliefs.
Scott did a one-eighty from thinking that Iraq was one of those “evil-doers” to saying they had no WMD’s and were good guys! Why? Well, the war with Iraq has given us a look at their records that are proving more than embarassing to many people- including Scott Ritter.
Not only have recovered files confirmed that he received more than $400,000 to make a film that criticized America’s stance toward Saddam, it also showed that his wife and daughter were given substantial “gifts”. None of this of course influenced Mr. Ritter.
U.S. forces are not only finding hundreds of millions of dollars that Saddam had hidden away, we’re finding secret documents on the French, Germans, Russians, Ritter and others that may be “spoils of waar” beyond anything we imagined.
THE FRENCH FRY!
May 2, 2004
It’s all over for the burst of bravado that the French demonstrated leading up to the Iraq war. Their pride (of what?) led them to think they could lead the rest of the world against the U.S. Instead, what they have done is take away all that the U.N Security Council had, which was moral authority.
Now, the French are trying to set up a NATO replacement and lead the EU to grandeur. That too is about to fall. My assessment is that even Germany and Russia will eventually pull away from this loser called Jacques Chirac.
The French economy is on the skids and the boycotting of French goods and services is far more impacting than even the French want to admit. I have not bought one bottle of French wine this year and I don’t expct to anytime soon. I am even passing up on French restaurants.
I must admit that every now and then I buy some “Freedom Fries”. However, those potatoes come from Idaho. The French have basically let their leadership do them in. They have shot themselves in the foot. This is not going to end soon or pretty. There’s not going to be any ugliness or war, just the end to any future elevation that France thought might come.
The bottom line is that the gig is up for French world political influence. The French have been FRIED! Self service too.
