FROM 9-1 TO 9-11
August 31, 2004
Labor day has now come and gone. Houstonians saw most of their plans go down the drain in rain. It didn’t stop the Mall shopping but it did drive down tourism in Galveston. There are bigger fish to fry though.
With 9-1 in the rear view mirror, 9-11 is quickly coming into view of the windshield. Between now and a week from this Thursday, there will be a lot of attention paid to our Homeland Security or the lack thereof: depending upon which party affiliation you wear.
Obviously the U.S. is not Iraq where a bomb-a-day seems to be the norm. Nor are we an Israel where it’s a tit-for-tat lifestyle of attacks. But we have had a 9-11 and we know the intentions of our enemies. As I have also written previously, al-Qaeda is not what it once was (not since 9-11) and they’d like to get back onto the front page of the world’s newspapers. Since an attack every two years seems to be an al-Qaeda behavior, 9-11-2003 has some special precautions to it.
I would not be surprised to see the national color code alert raised over the next ten days. If it’s not what will be raised is a lot of rhetoric about being safe: and it’s well placed!
FINALLY, IT’S OVER!
August 30, 2004
The high for Monday is the mid 80’s. Of course it’s going to rain all day, but it’s not that bad of a trade off.
The two book-ends of summer are now in place. Memorial Day opens up the summer and Labor Day closes it. We Houstonians now have some hope of decent weather. The dog days of summer are over!
May you have a blessed and restful Labor Day!
SAME SONG- DIFFERENT VERSE!
August 28, 2004
The death toll in Najaf is now 105 and it will go higher. More than 140 people have been injured. And the key among those dead, and probably the target, was Ayatollah Mohammad Baqir al-Hakim. He was the leader of the Shiite Supreme Council for Islamic Revolution.
As night fell on Najaf, gun fire, explosions, and rioting could be heard throughout the city. Who did it? Was it the Sunnis, outside terrorists, or some of Saddam’s old cronies? No matter, what’s done is done and here’s what’s being spoken throughout the city.
We’d rather live under Saddam than live like this!
It’s the same rhetoric that Moses heard from those that he was leading out of Egypt thousands of years ago. They wanted to be delivered from hard labor (making bricks without straw); however, when you have lived under a slave mentality all your life, it’s hard to adjust to freedom.
Of course all this violence is being conducted just for the purpose of driving the people back to wanting slavery. Freedom sounds nice and it’s a concept worth living and dying for; however, it doesn’t happen overnight. It doesn’t happen in a few months. It won’t happen in a year. It didn’t happen in America over night and it took a Revolution with thousands of deaths to bring it about. So, what makes us think we can transform Iraq into a democracy overnight?
If anyone thought that, the last few days are quickly changing that paradigm.
TESTING THE WATERS, WINDS
August 27, 2004
Ib the Bible the number TEN symbolically stands for TESTING. I guess you could say Judge Moore flunked the test. He was not able to keep the TEN Commandments in the Judiciary building in Alabama. But, I am talking about another TEN.
I am talking about what is beginning to be whispered about- HILL! You know, Hillary Clinton, wife of the infamous Bill? With Bush tanking in poll numbers, and memories dancing in her head of returning to the White House again, Hill’s thinking about it.
If she decides to run for President, she’ll be the TENTH Democratic candidate. Of that ten only one is creating any kind of excitement, and should Howard Dean win the nomination, he’d certainly loose being as far left as he is. So, can Hillary rescue the Democrats? Can she bring home the bacon for Barbara Streisand?
It would certainly be an interesting fourteen months between now and national election day should she make that decision. Several reports out in the last week indicate she’s huddling with her advisors and that a decision will be made within three weeks.
There will be a lot of testing the waters, probing the political winds, and most importantly, getting commitments from the the big money-men- and women. Keep an eye on this one.
PS. Seems as though Arnold had a seamy lifestyle 26 years ago according to Oui Magazine. Interesting that it’s no big deal to anyone except the Tom McClintock religious right wing group in California. In other words, only the “religious-church-group” will hold it against him. Isn’t it the church that’s to be the forgiving one?
FIRE THE FEDERAL FOOLS!
August 26, 2004
The American Constitution served this nation well for almost 200 years; however, somewhere a few decades ago, all of that changed. From my perspective, it happened in a series of ’60’s decisions by the Supreme Court. You can go back to some of my earlier commentaries for more specifics.
In our balance of power uniqueness, I think the Judiciary has over-stepped it’s bounds. The Federal judges who serve for LIFE, with little fear of the decisions they make, and almost no accountability, have gotten out of control. Federal juges no longer INTERPRET the constitution, they are literally REWRITING it!
The Congressional wing of our government needs to come in and write some new laws to put the courts back in their place, and the Executive Branch (George Bush) needs to give his views on enforcement of some of the crazy rulings.
The courts are on a course that will place us in the same league of Russia, China, and other nations where the mention of any god is outlawed. It’s NOT going to happen, but just how it doesn’t happen is not yet determined.
Here in Texas today, U.S. District Judge, George P. Kazen in essence told the run-away Senators what they should do, and then he told Rick Perry how he should run the state and when he should call a third special session. So, what business is that of his? It’s just another example of Federal Fools dressed in black robes who are becoming more like Kings who have no clothes.
IF PERSECUTION WORKS…
August 25, 2004
If persecutions are good for stirring up the Christian community, we should be seeing a lot of activity soon. Alabama has caught the eye of the press; however, Houston got mentioned today as well. The Supreme Court is going to have to intervene one day soon, like it or not.
Mel Gibson is still under attack from many quarters. The Ant-Defamation League is all over Mel, like white on rice. It will be interesting to see if the old “Braveheart” himself gives in to the Jewish demands for a more gentle Jewish approach to the death of Jesus Christ.
China is still hunting down all Christians in a campaign called “Strike Hard”. And, strike hard they are. An eighty year old pastor has been arrested for having a house church, and preaching the gospel. The Chinese authorities are even leveling church buildings where the adherents persist.
I am reminded of 1992 abortion battles here in Houston as I see some of my old friends out on the streets in Alabama: Flip Benham and Pat Mahoney specifically. So, if persecution works (see my commentary from yesterday), it’s a great day to be a Christian! ![]()
CONFLICTED…………..PART 2
August 24, 2004
The Alabama Ten Commandments issue is beginning to turn on some interesting subtle points. Is this an issue of seperation of church and state or is it an issue of the right to acknowledge God? It may seem like a difference without distinction; however, it’s quite the contray.
One of my favorites expressions is, “Any truth taken to an extreme is heresy”. Given enough time and enough rope, those who seek to expel the thought of God from anything and everything will eventually bring God back stronger. In Acts 1:8, the Apostles were told to disperse and go evangelize. Thirteen years later in Acts 8:1 we find them enjoying the comforts of Jerusalem. So God brings persecution to get them to do what they had not.
I think the game is on again. Sensing victory, I believe the god-haters and those who seek to remove God from everything, are about to snatch defeat (their own) from the jaws of victory. Here in Houston, lawyer and real estate agent, Kay Staley has filed a suit to remove the Bible from a monument on Fannin.
Right. Go ahead and jump on the idiot bandwagon. Do it while people of conscience and faith in God are still a majority. That roar that is currently faint, is getting louder. I sense it’s a tsunami about to wash across our shores and bring back some common sense regarding church, state, and the one and only Almighty God who created all of us.
CONFLICTED NOT CONVICTED!
August 23, 2004
I believe it was the movie “Analyze This”. DiNero was trying to make up his mind about killing Billy Crystal. It was a decision in which he said he was “conflicted”. Well, I’ve held off saying anything about the Ten Commandments for two weeks now. I’ve mulled it over and I am still conflicted, but here’s where it all shakes out- for me.
I think Justice Moore is wrong in not obeying the courts that are over him. I think our nation is headed in a dangerous direction by forsaking the principles that it was founded. We are fast becoming a nation wherein the majority is not Christian.
But worst of all, I see this case much like the “prayer in school issue”. No one wants to hear this but, the problem isn’t that we’ve banned prayer in schools but that we’ve abandoned prayer in the home. The Christian community is asking for a public display of something that needs to be displayed in our hearts. We’re told by the apostle Paul that the gospel is now written on our hearts and not on stone.
I know where this is headed. It won’t be long before we take “In God We Trust” off our money. It’ll happen because we first took it out of our way of life. Pat Mahoney and all of the people protesting outside the Judiciary Building in Alabama are fighting a losing battle. Until we get the private-individual ethic down, we can’t demand that the public ethic ahderes to a higher standard. Oh, we CAN but it won’t fly.
ANOTHER ANNIVERSARY DATE
August 21, 2004
We’re coming up on the second anniversary of the 9-11 destruction of the Twin Towers. There was a lot of attention paid to the first anniversary; however, it’s the second anniversary that needs the most attention.
Al-Qaida has had a history of pulling off major events every two years. They could change their tactics of course, but I am more concerned about the coming 9-11 than I was about the first one.
I also think that future attacks, whenever they come, will not be of the old genre. To attack in a different venue would stretch our already thin ranks. And someday down the road we’re going to see an internet virus that will make even the Sobig.F look So.small.
So, we just have one more thing to worry about over the next three weeks. Like, we needed one more thang?
HACKED OFF AT THE HACKERS?
August 20, 2004
The last two days have been one big pain in the processor. For a thirty six hour period, I spent much of my time deleting what were obviously “bugs” sent to disrupt operations. Our server was able to intercept and clean them up but our software could not delete them, just clean them.
So, I got to delete hundreds of dumb and obviously tainted e-mails. Then all of a sudden (around 7am Thursday morning), they just stopped. The Sobig.F virus has proven to be the most potent ever. AOL said that it had blocked more than 25 million such e-mails.
Operations were shut down all over the world.
Sobig.F was preceeded by “blaster” and “Lovsan” and was just ahead of “Welchia” or Nachi. It’s estimated that the five together have increased e-mail activity by 60%. You have to wonder where all this is headed.
On the one hand it’s good news because we’re learning on the fly as to how to handle all these nasty bugs; however, on the other hand they show our vulnerability. A slowed e-mail is nothing compared to an electical outage for 50 million people or a surprise attack on our military or nation one day
I am sure that before it’s all over with, we’re going to be more than just “hacked-off” at all the hackers.
MULTICULTURALISM MESSES!
August 19, 2004
There isn’t anyone who would deny the positive influence that millions (33) of immigrants have brought to this nation. The Big Apple is known as the “melting pot” of the world. The recall election in California will have the ballot printed in seven different languages. And the San Francisco Giants baseball stadium concession area has at least three dozen cultural delicacies to choose.
But, things are changing rapidly and violently. Muslims want their drivers license picture taken with their traditional garb on their heads, covering everything but their eyes. So, what’s the picture for? The case was tried recently in a Florida court.
At midnight tonight (Weds), the Ten Commandments must come down from Alabama’s judicial building. The Pledge of Allegiance is under attack or at least the “under God” part. Illegals from Mexico want to by-pass our immigration laws with a Mexican issued ID card.
I could spend the night reviewing all the junk that the ACLU and other “rights” groups are pushing. Our society is in to “social ethics” at the expense of “individual ethics”. We’ll break our individual vows (divorce) at a 50% clip, while only breaking our social vows (debt) by 10%. Modernity praises social values not realizing where the come from evidently (individuals).
It’s clear that American values are going by the wayside in the name of “multiculturalism”. If we keep going as we are, there will one day no longer be an “America”. Our nation either stands for SOMETHING or it will fall for EVERYTHING (and it is).
A MESSAGE TO THE ESCAPISTS!
August 18, 2004
If things keep going like they seem to be headed, the U.S. will pull out of NAFTA, bring all of our troops back from Korea, Germany, Afghanistan, Iraq, and we’ll have businessmen on the streets at the next International summit protesting “globalization.”
The daily and weekly killing of our men, blowing up oil wells, halting the water supply, and the bombing of the U.N. headquarters in Baghdad Tuesday has the “willy-nilly” crowd saying, “Let’s pull out”. Ahh, how difficult it is to love that crowd.
So, are we going to just walk away and hand a victory to the terrorists? Are we going to give in when the going gets tough? Are we to blow off the $80 billion we’ve spent so far and write if off as a failed venture? I’m sure a lot of the left-wingers would love to see Bush do just that, and then hammer him over the head with it next October.
Are we going to let a hundred plus service men and women die in vain? Have we not learned any lessons from Viet Nam, Lebanon, and Mogadishu? Do we think that running, throwing in the towel, and getting our of Dodge is going to make things better?
Give me a break!
Now is the hour, Iraq is the place, Bush is the president, and we are the people that will take a stand. I am sure many people thought the war on terrorism would be a brief sprint to glory: however, that’s not what Bush promised or told us. It’s a marathon that will take all we’ve got. This is potentially a decades-long war. It is going to be costly in dollars and lives, but is there an alternative? Aren’t we on the other side of the Rubicon now?
My message to those voices that are getting louder that we should pull out as soon as possible is- are you CRAZY?
CROW OR FILET NEXT AUGUST?
August 17, 2004
Monday was a day wherein we will see just how well some of the “old-school” formulas work. Are there any absolutes in the financial markets or has our entire financial system gone to seed?
The Industrials and the Transports both hit new highs on the same day which is historically a BUY signal for a good period of time. We’re still in a BEAR market environment, but this rally could have some legs. There are a couple of concerns though and they aren’t small.
The volume on the NYSE was barely over a million. Lowry’s buying power is at a five month low. And most importantly, everyone (99%) is ga-ga about how fabulous the markets are. It amazes me that the Nasdaq is selling at 72x value and people think that there are great buys out there! But, it’s when everyone is all aglow in fairy-tales that the damn usually bursts.
Listen. Greenspan turned out nearly $50 billion in new US$’s last week, or what on an annual basis would be $2 TRILLION in new money! If the markets can’t run with those numbers, they never can. We’re turning from DEFLATION to massive coming INFLATION.
Whatever profits you might have won’t be worth much if denominated in US$’s. The sky is not falling, the world’s not coming to an end; however, keep an eye on GOLD. I predict that a year from now we’ll be looking at $500+ an ounce. Time will tell and I can either eat some crow or enjoy a fine filet!
THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER!
August 16, 2004
It just seems that August is the month that gets a bad rap. Historically, August is a bad month for the stock market. It’s a bad month for stock brokers because more people are on vacation than are concerned about buying stocks.
It’s usually the hottest month overall. Here in Houston, it’s akin to hell. AC bills are their highest. And now it seems the “spill-over” is impacting everything.
Poll numbers say that the Terminator is losing to Bustamante in California. Baghdad has no water as terrorists have blown up the main water line. It seems that blowing up the major oil line to Turkey just wasn’t enough mischief. It’ll be intersting to see if we can build Iraq faster than the terrorists can tear it down.
It’s one thing to be hot, it’s another to not have any electricity at all as many in the Northeast found last week. Now, there’s no gasoline in Phoenix! What’s up with that? Oh, yes it’s August.
Since it’s the 18th, we’re on the back-side of the long month. Soon the Labor Day weekend will be here and everything will be back to normal: The War on Terrorism, Politics 2004, and news from the eleven Texas senators in New Mexico. On second thought, maybe the “Dog Days” aren’t all that bad after all.
