IS THAT A WHEEL IN THE DITCH?
September 30, 2004
I don’t know about you but it appears to me that the wheels are coming off the Bush administration machine. The LEAK is going to do a lot of damage regardless of whether or not there is a special prosecutor. But, that’s not the real story. There’s always a story behind the story.
According to several insiders, this is a war by the doves (what a pun) on the hawks for taking the U.S. to war with faulty intelligence information, and without U.N. approval. If Rummy likes a fight, I think he’s got one: so too for Dick Cheney.
Then there are those Republican Senators (not those Democratic ten that are running for president) who are revolting over the idea of giving $87B to the cause in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s going to be a nasty and close fight to get those billions.
The right wing is also smarting from what Rush thinks about McNabb. It appears that the only place things are going well for the Republicans is in California where Arnold is surging; however, with five more days to go, anything can surface there.
It seems that there are just some days, some times, when all hell breaks loose against you. It appears that this is one of those times and Bush is one of those people. When 70% of the people (according to one of those pesky polls) want a special prosecutor, it says that Bush is in trouble. I mean here’s a man who has the highest the highest trust ratings of any president in history (had). And, his administration is under attack- big time. The good news is that we’re still thirteen months away from the election. Still time to pull a rabbit out of the hat (can you say UBL and Saddam?).
If that’s not a wheel in the ditch, those sure like lug bolts along the side of the road for sure!
MORE ON THE ‘ANTI-SOCIETY’
September 29, 2004
I know this is going to come as a shock that’s hard to get over; however, deal with it! The “other” foreign-speaking California governor candidate has dropped out. I’m talking about Arianna Huffington of course. She is the epitome of my commentary from yesterday. It appears that she has finally proven what most have known. She was not running FOR governor. She was running AGAINST Arnold.
From the very first day, she planned her official signing to run for the office by showing up at the same time that Arnold did just so she could steal some of the lime light- and knock over his microphones before he spoke.
In the debate, all of her acidity ran right in the direction of Arnold. Yesterday, she gets out of the race (what ever made her think she could win, and why was she on the debate stage with less than 2% of the polling numbers anyway?), and pleads for everyone to vote AGAINST the recall. Note the word AGAINST! Why vote against the recall? It’s because she’s AGANST Arnold and she feels that’s the only way to stop him now.
On the other side of the nation, we are hearing nothing but LEAK, LEAK, LEAK! Drip, drip, drip of ANTI this and ANTI that. All of the “Rove did it verbage” is now settling down to reality, maybe. Once this molehill, that the press is making into Mount Everest goes away, Washington will think of something else to be negative about.
Where are all the PROS when you need one?
NEGATIVE TRAGEDIES
September 28, 2004
I think the solution to making America a better place to live is to pack up the entire United States Congress, including all of the ten Democratic candidates that aren’t already in the Senate, and ship them out for a two week tour of Iraq.
Every Congressman who comes back from a visit to Iraq carries the same message. Iraq is full of positive things, growth, and progress. The only negative in Iraq is the U.S. press that is viewed there.
The U.S. press is doing more to damage our prospects for success in Iraq than anyone, other than maybe the ten Democratic candidates. When the U.S. went in to liberate Iraq in 1991, and then stopped short of Baghdad, every Iraqi who supported our efforts wound up dead or mutilated. So when they hear the rantings of the Democratic party big-wigs about us pulling out of Iraq, they have to have fears of making a commitment to us.
A question that I heard this morning was, “Is it possible to run for president of the U.S. and not run down the country in the process.” Is there any civility left in politics? It is literally a national tragedy that the press and politics have become so negative. How demoralizing to be in a U.S. military uniform, risking your life in Baghdad, and hearing General Clark say the things he’s saying.
Sometimes the “right” to say things is “wrong”.
WHEN IT’S BETTER TO BE QUIET!
September 25, 2004
It is going to be interesting to see how the next nine days play out in California. In case you have not been paying any attention to the 5th largest economy in the world (and near bankrupt), there’s a recall election going on.
For some unknown reason, five people debated Wednesday evening. Anyone with any common sense could tell you that it’s a race between just three of the candidates: Tom, Cruz, & Arnold. Maybe we could make a movie with that name.
After the debate that Tom won, the big boys decided to come out for the horse that came in second: Arnold. In a game of political “hat-trick”, Bill Simon backed Arnold Thursday, Issa came out for Arnold on Friday, and Peter is supposed to give his baseball and bat to Arnold on Saturday.
So, what’s Tom going to do? Will he stay in the race because he promised he would? Will he play the role of the spoiler and forever be known as the guy who kept the Democrats in power? Or, will he somehow find an out from his “principles” and accept some plum offer?
The pressure on Tom has to be intense; however, he has an intense demeanor anyway. He has put himself between a rock and a hard place. Is there ever a time and a situation where you change you mind and break a promise? I guess we are going to find out in the next nine days.
Maybe Tom should have paid more attention to Deut. 23:21. Maybe we all should!
JUDICIAL GODS RUN-AMUCK?
September 24, 2004
And you thought getting a bill through Congress was a hard and long process! Well, it all depends upon what’s at stake. In what basically amounts to a two-minute drill (football), the House jumped on the “Do Not Call Registry” regulation that was ruled unconstitutional by a vote of 412-8. The Senate went a bit further with a 95-0 vote.
Listen, all of this happened in ONE DAY. No committees, no filibusters, no dramatic speeches or tabling of motions. You want it, the Congress can get it done in one day. No bickering and no partisan politics. There’s just one problem. Another court in Denver just one-upped the Congress. A judge in Oklahoma had ruled on Wednesday that the FCC had no jurisdiction in the matter. The judge in Denver Thursday said it violated free speech: the first amendment.
These days, Congress can’t pass laws fast enough to stay ahead of the courts. The courts have become the final authority and since they are elected for life, what’s to fear?
We’re seeing most courts becoming very active, and instead of justt interpreting the law, they are making the law. We are headed for a showdown. The “three-Chamber” concept is breaking up and about to erupt in serious consequences.
A major constitutional crisis was averted in California this week when the recall election was re-instated; however, the No Call Registry issue is about to erupt in in some vitriolic debate. My money is on the executive and legislative branch, but it’s going to take some “doings” to bring the judiciary back under control.
Any practicing attorney will tell you that judges rule their court rooms like gods, and gods are hard to deal with.
IF RELIGION WERE TO RULE!
September 23, 2004
As I was preparing for an upcoming seminar next Monday, I found myself at first being harsh and then sad about the “state of religion” around the world. It didn’t help that I just finished reading the book by Charles Kimball entitled, “When Religion Becomes Evil”.
Then there’s the story I just posted about a Nigerian woman who is scheduled to be stoned for having an affair outside of marriage. Oh yes, and there’s the religious crowd in California (I’m not sure it could be called a crowd) who can’t forgive what Arnold did three decades ago.
Are you getting the picture?
If there’s a constant in this cosmos, it’s the church that’s supposed to offer forgiveness, offering retribution instead. Yep. And history also shows that facts don’t matter when prejudices are hot. Never mind that Galileo had it right, put him in jail. Forget about the fact Giordano Bruno was telling the truth, the Roman Catholic church burned him at the stake for his scientific findings.
Maybe there really is a reason why God set up distinct ruling entities sch as family, church, and government. And maybe, just maybe, there was a reason why He only gave the sword to civil government and not to the church. If religion were to rule the government, it would not only be a dark day, it would be against God’s very own word and desire!
THE THREE PHASED WAR!
September 22, 2004
Bush went before the U.N. Tuesday without his hat in hand, unapologetic. A few minutes after he finished speaking, the California 9th district court did the RIGHT thing and over-ruled the LEFT-winged three who had earlier put the recall in limbo. So, with those two things behind us, we can get on with the war- for president of these United States.
Phase one is from now until January. Over the next 3+ months ten Democratics will traverse America bashing Bush for everything and anything. Meanwhile, back in the U.S. Senate chambers, Kennedy will continue to embarass himself with outrageous attacks on Bush. You can expect to see the Bush numbers continue to free fall.
Phase two will start in January and be kicked off with the State Of The Union Address. It’s here that his poll numbers will begin to bottom out and rise. The war in Iraq should have cooled greatly though who knows what we’ll be doing with Iran or N. Korea! The Spring could see UBL and or Saddam in the fold as well.
Phase three will begin in late summer as the Democrats make it more or a fair fight and settle on only one candidate. In a one-on-one the match up (regardless of who it is) it is alot easier. Then there’s the Republican convention, the turning over of the reins to Iraq, the troops come home, and maybe even the economy is doing better.
If all goes as planned, Bush wins a second term by 52-48% and the Democrats lose even more House and Senate seats. Ahh, Bush can at least dream and who knows, this scenario just might be prophetic!
PS. Think Hillary senses the same thing?
THE FICKLE ELECTORATE
September 21, 2004
The people of California want Gray Davis out! No, wait, now they don’t. Recent polls show that maybe they want to keep Davis. Three months ago, seventy percent of the people thought Bush was doing a great job in Iraq, and now barely a majority do. Last week, Bush led all Democratic contenders for the presidential nod. This week, Bush trails the newcomer on the block, Gen. Clark and Kerry. Kerryy?
Can we really trust these polls and pollsters? Are we really all that fickle that we change our minds in a nano second or at least a couple of months? What’s it say about us, or maybe the press?
We are no longer a DEMOCRACY, but rather, a PSYTOCRACY. We are a society controlled by externally induced data. In other words, we used to be changed by advertising. Whatever dish washing soap was being advertised the most, we bought. Whatever new pair of jeans had the most spots on TV, got our attention and our dollars.
Today, though it’s the news reporters and whoever controls the air waves. It’s always been that way but not so strongly. We used to get our news at 5:30 and 10pm. Today, we have news channels 24/7 and our heads turn on a swivel. However the wind blows, we go. A dangerous lifestyle to say the least.
GETTING DOWNRIGHT NASTY!
September 19, 2004
If I were George Bush, I couldn’t wait until the summer of 2004. How’d you like to turn on the evening news, or read a newspaper, and see what TEN (count em) Democratic presidential wannabes were saying about you? Eventually, the race will get down to just a one-on-one. But for now, it’s a good ole “piling-on”!
It seems that politics has become quite personal of recent. Having been an observer of political campaigns since 1960, I can honestly say that it was only with the victory of Bill Clinton in 1992 that things started to get a bit too personal.
With the Republican victory in the manner that it came in 2000 (Florida recount), political abuse has increased greatly. I thought there could be no hate as great as what the Republicans had for Clinton, however, it now appears that we’re feeding on an ugliness that cannot get enough to eat.
Never mind the Terrible Ten who can’t wait to get to a microphone to bash Bush, it’s the others who are long in the tooth that are taking great pride in moving the word nasty to a new level.
Can anyone doubt that what Ted Kennedy said about Bush last week was a new low? And it true, impeachment should begin immediately. Teddy called the Iraq war a “fraud”. And then he said that the Bush administration was handing out “bribes” to foreign nations to help. Wow! Talk about “bring it on”. I think Bush said that to al-Qaeda, not Kennedy.
Anyway, the nasty season has begun early this election year. We’ve still got 13+ months to go! Hang on!
ANY DAY NOW!
September 17, 2004
As we captured the former Iraqi Defense Minister, Sultan Hashim Ahmad al Tal, and knocked off #40 of the 55 in the deck of cards, I sense that we’re getting close to finding the big boy. I’m talking Saddam of course.
I’ve been saying that while stock in the Bush administration has been dropping, (how’d you like to have ten presidential candidates attacking you every day?) that he still has at least two ACES (if not wild cards) in his deck. Those two cards would be UBL and Saddam.
Not only would the Dow rise 500+ points on the capture of either one (1,000 for both), but Bush’s poll numbers would go up about 5+ points for each man. So, don’t count Bush out this early. We’re still a year away. And, there’s more candidates to come into the fray (Hillary?).
So, any day now, Saddam could be the GOOD NEWS that both Bush and the markets are looking for. Did I mention that not catching him could also be bad news?
MY GUESS: HILLARY VS. BUSH
September 16, 2004
Yesterday, General Wesley Clark joined the Nine Dwarfs that are running for the Democratic presidential bid next year. So, we have TEN! Is there anyone else that wants to get into the game before we close down the entry period?
My guess is YES; there’s another woman who wants a chance at taking Bush out. I’ve said it before, so this isn’t new information from me; however, there are two things that make my “gut” sense it even more.
Yesterday, Bill said that Hill had not made up her mind. Up until now, it was definitely not. Now, it’s a consideration? Yep! With the poll numbers for Bush plummeting, the whole idea of Hill in ‘04 is sounding more interesting.
In the next few weeks, the Nine Dwarfs will have to reveal how much money they have raised recently. Dean will blow everyone away with more than $10,000,000! Of course no one can touch the projected $200,000,000 that Bush is expected to raise- until now.
Billionaire Soros wants Bush out so bad he can taste it so he’s kicking in million along with several other big-wigs. The group called America Votes already has $250,000,000 in the bank! Just when you thought we had a new campaign finance law in place, the USSC is reviewing it and in the meantime, Soros and Co. have created a “shadow” party. It’s this group that is going to woo and back Hillary.
So, forget about Wesley Clark and the Nine Dwarfs. If my guess is right, soon the political scene is going to get really nasty as we have the third round of presidential battles: Bush Vs. Clinton!
THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE?
September 15, 2004
When I was young, I had a lot of plans. First, there was the idea of playing left field for the Brooklyn Dodgers and then they moved to Los Angeles. A potential career in the military had to give way to the thought of being the next Clarence Darrow; however, after a brief stint as a law clerk in the County Attorney’s office, I opted for graduate school. You see, a political science degree would serve me well as I dreamed of being president of the U.S.
Working on Bob Dole’s campaign for Senator in Kansas gave me the courage to run for State Representative from the 44th district. It was a very close race for a twenty-two year old to lose to the wily veteran Vernon Spears. As it turns out, more was lost than a political office. I lost my title of “idealist”. I have since courted the title of “pragmatic idealist”.
So, the turn of events in California this week don’t surprise me. I no longer think that life is fair or that motivations are pure. Davis was elected by the same apparatus that the infamous 9th Circuit Court of Appeals just disallowed for the recall. It’s obvious that the three judges want the election moved to March 2nd when the Democrats hold their primary.
Is the will of the people being served by an extension in the recall fiasco? I’m afraid not: it’s the will of those in power that’s being served. If the whole panel, or if the Supreme Court, over rules the threesome, it matters not. There’s a virus running rampant at the top of political process. What can cure it will be painful. But then, I’m a pragmatic idealist, aren’t I!
DEAD END STREETS: PART #2
September 14, 2004
As a follow up to Monday’s commentary, I read a piece by James Grant, Wall Street guru, that birthed a few more thoughts. James said, “Asians produce; Americans consume. Asians ship merchandise East; Americans move dollars West.”
It used to be the Atlantic ocean that produced most of the trade as America and Europe did business with each other. Now, it’s the Pacific ocean that’s carrying the mail and the question is, for how long? And that all depends upon how long the US$’s that go to Asia will come back to America in the form of Treasury purchases?
You see, somewhere down the road, Asia will decide that Greenspan can print dollars faster than they can buy them leading to a US$ that has no value. Does anyone rememebr the German currency in WWII when people loaded wheel barrels full of the worthless currency just to buy a loaf of bread. At the rate we’re going, one day, it will be cheaper to wallpaper with US$’s than to go out and buy wallpaper. Come to think of it, with the new “peach” colored $20 bill coming out, that’s not a bad idea.
America needs to get back to the fundamentals, pay the price, get real, and start the road back to being a producer-manufacturer (of more than just fiat paper money). As a reader pointed out yesterday, we’re not only losing manufacturing jobs but we’re losing the servce base sector as well. Like a farmer eating next year’s seed corn, we’re quickly shutting down our future. It’s a dead end street with little road left in front of us.
CUL-DE-SACS & DEAD END STS.
September 13, 2004
It’s just a matter of time before America is no longer King of the Jungle. So, we might as well enjoy the ride while it’s fun and basically free. China and India are the future simply by virtue of their population base. Both have a billion plus population. America has but 25-30% of their base.
It gets worse!
Americans have become set in their lifestyles to the point where they refuse to take anything less for their time. And they have the unions to back them up. So, enjoy it while it lasts. China has workers that will do a job for $3 an hour that we pay our people $30-$40 an hour to do.
Is there any wonder everything is made in China? Is it any wonder that when you call Dell or Compaq for questions about your computer that your call is answered by an employee in India! Right now the world is happy to take US$’s and to invest in US bonds (they own 45% of our U.S. Treasuries).
At some point this game will come to an end. At some point our technology will go the way of our manufacturing base. Since Bush took office, the U.S. has lost some 2 million jobs: they went to China and the Far East. A Democratic president can’t change it any more than Bush can.
We’re destined to just go round in circles for a season, in this cul-de-sac, until we run out of gas, (they quit taking US$’s) and we realize it really a dead end street. We can change the future IF we act now. But are we really will to change, to sacrifice?
