IT’S A VERY, VERY GREY WORLD!

June 16, 2005

I am not talking colors but concepts and philosophies. One of the smarter principles that I learned somewhere in mid-life, was the AND-ALSO approach. There are simply too many EITHER-OR people in this world. Do it my way or take the highway!

We’ve seen how the EITHER-OR approach works. The Taleban applied it in Afghanistan. Osama is an advocate of it. Almost all radical Muslim groups are as well. I posted a story Wednesday of a Christian woman who was arrested in Sudan (and given 40 lashes across her back) because she didn’t wear a Muslim headcovering. Live in Sudan and you must do as the Muslim’s do, even if you aren’t one.

Easy to sit here in America and shake our head and finger at such action. However, the Southern Baptists came very close to working further into the EITHER-OR principle at their annual convention today. In a crazy resolution, the “messengers” voted down a proposal that would have asked all members to pull their children out of all public education.

It’s scary that a group this size could even be thinking about such an action. Someone has way too much time on their hands. What will they come up with next? Don’t ask, don’t tell (me). The God that I try to serve is inclusive, but then of course we will always have those Pharisees that see the world as BLACK & WHITE (while wearing only black).

While I see the world as more grey (blended and inclusive), I still prefer bright colors, since I am a “winter”. :-)

WHERE IS DONALD TRUMP?

June 15, 2005

Talk about double-dipping: talk about fleecing the sheep. I am always amazed at the gall of politicians to espouse one thing, and then blatantly engage in what they talked against the day before.

Kerry has been on the campaign stump telling the people that #43 isn’t giving them a FAIR shake! Bush has been a divider, and not a uniter. Bush has not cared for he common folk: he’s not been compassionate. The bottom line is that he’s not represented the people of America.

Okay, so how about the one crying “wolf”? Is he earning his pay: a man for the people? Let’s use one simple test. As one of the two senators representing the people of Mass. what’s his voting record like?

Well, maybe a better question would be does he have a voting record? You see, JFK has been around to vote on only 14 issues out of 112. 98 out of 112 votes he did not represent the people of Mass. He’s taking their money and they aren’t getting anything in return. Fair?

The Lt. Governor of Mass is asking for him to resign. Of course, since the Lt. Gov. is a Republican (Kerry Healey), it’s a partisan ambush of course. There’s nothing wrong with a Senator missing 98 out of 112 votes. Really? Bob Dole gave up his Senate seat in 1996 when he ran for President. Maybe it’s a Demo-Rep. thing as Joe Lieberman kept his Senate seat while running for VP.

Where is Donald Trump when you need him. Kerry, you are FIRED!

A JUNE 30th INDEPENDENCE DAY?

June 14, 2005

Sometimes we suffer from near-sightedness and other times from far-sightedness. The focus is on November 2nd for most Americans and all politicians; however, June 30th may prove to be a more important date on the road to 11-2.

It is interesting to see the milestones that we place in our lives as though they would be remembered in the halls of eternity. Few last even a fortnight of sand storms. When you back a dyng animal into a corner, and he senses death, you can be sure that he’ll take a pound of your flesh with him to his grave.

We spoiled Americans have not a clue as to the gift of democracy we live with. The 38% turnout of the new EU states in this weekend’s elections prove they have no better reverence or understanding.

To have a democracy or anything short of a Muslim theocracy in the Middle East is paramount to heresy. There’s only one nation exercising anything ‘democratic’ and they are hated by everyone else. I’m talking Israel here.

Unless something is done in the next two weeks, Iraq will take one of it’s first steps towards experiencing a democratic lifestyle. And it could be contagious. What if Iraq is prosperous? What if the people like freedom? What if the people opt to worship whatever god they want without the inerference of a dictator? So mnay ‘what-ifs’. If the Democratic Genie is let out of the bottle in Iraq, anything could happen!

So, at all costs, democracy must be defeated in Iraq. Every interim government official must be killed. Intimidation, fear, murder, and mayhem must reign supreme: in the name of Allah!

BACK TO THE LONG, HOT SUMMER

June 13, 2005

The nation has said its last farewell to #40. We’ve applauded the sky-diving courage of #41. We get to see the unveiling of a picture of #42 today. And so we get back to the normal battles of the long, hot summer. Can #43 keep his number or must he relinguish it to #44?

So, one of the unpredictable events on the way to the November elections has happened. What impact will Reagan’s death have on the elections, if any? It may only be three hot months for the Yankees, but it’s more like five hot months for us Texans. Whether 3,4, or 5, expect many more surprises.

Let me take a stab at what some of the more probable events will be that determine the final outcome. Who will be the VP running mates for #43 and hoped for #44? Will there be any major surprises? It’s doubtful that John McCain will jump ship but will RUDY take Dick’s place alongside #43?

Will there be a major terrorist attack here in America: a minor one? Several? Will we finally catch Osama? Will there be another major international crisis (Iran, North Korea, or India)? Will we see a major hedge fund go under causing an economic crisis? Will the terrorists blow up some major refineries driving oil prices into a crisis mode?

Will there be a combination of the above, or something more insidious that I didn’t mention? Ahh, the drama of this long, hot summer that’s just begun.

THE SPIRIT OF THE MAN…..

June 11, 2005

For the final years of his life, Ronnie’s mind was clouded by illness. That cloud has now lifted. He is himself again – more himself than at any time on this earth. We here still move in twilight. Let us give thanks today for a life that achieved so much for all of God’s children. Margaret Thatcher spoke those words. For me, she was the highlight of a funeral filled with many eloquent dignataries.

I’ll miss the sunrise service tonight as I have another service to be involved in: a wedding. But, it is plain to see that as the sun sets on this nation Friday night, that the world is a better place because of this man named Ronald Wilson Reagan. Many young people who never knew him, now have a vision of a man who truly wore the mantle of president well.

More importantly, for everyone there is the model of a husband who declared that the room was empty when his wife was not there. They were more than John & Jackie Kennedy. They were true soul mates, and it hard to imagine how Nancy Reagan will live without him. In fact, I am amazed at how well she stood up under the intense emotion, walked the stairs of President #1, and endured such long emotional days. But, she did!

The “spirit” of the man Ronald Wilson Reagan indeed embodied the Spirit of His creator. He loved all mankind. He was generous and bigger than life. And now as we traverse the next five months of American politics in search of the next president, may we remember the 40th president. May we call upon the practices that he employed as he ran for office. And, may we redeem a thread of civility that’s been so frayed in recent years.

May the spirit of the man we just said goodbye to, help us to embrace the fullness of the Holy Spirit that we might have smiles when we meet both face to face, one day in eternity.

BIG TIME EVENTS OF LIFE!!!

June 10, 2005

We’re living in some exciting times. I am sure that every generation can say that. But, so can we. Friday will be one of those monumental days. A day when America finds it’s past- it’s greatness. A day when emotions are worn on our sleeves, and a day when Bush catches up in the political polls with Kerry (come next week).

I have been talking about those things that happen that we have no control over (recently) which I call fate. Humanism is just another name for “man is god”. The only problem is that it’s spelled with a small “g”, and the God with a large “G”, can do whatever He so chooses.

I am sure that there will be lots of surprises between now and when we go to the polls in November: however, June 11 will count for a lot of votes. The capture of bin Laden would add about 8 points to the Bush popularity polls. An attack on America could swing the election one way or the other, depending upon where the strike came from.

And then how aout this rumor. Dick Cheney decides to step down as the VP running mate to Bush and Rudy Guiliani is Bush’s VP choice. This could not only put New York in play, but it could set the Republicans up for a good shot at winning in 2008. Hey, Cheney isn’t going to run for President with his heart and age (in 2008). So who succeeds Bush- if he wins in November?

It’s rumored that Cheney is willing to take on a another position to help the party win not only in 2004 but also 2008. There are lots of BIG EVENTS between now and November. Friday, June 11th is just the most immediate one.

IN SEARCH OF HOPE & MORE!

June 9, 2005

The last twenty four hours (I am writing this at 2am Thursday) I have been living on planes. Nearly four hours on a commercial jet and seven on a private Lear jet. I have literally traveled as far as the U.S. is wide, and in between caught some images of the Reagan happenings. Here and there, thanks to Blackberry, I’ve kept up with e-mail and other news.

Worst of all, the places I have visited have not had Fox News, so I have had to listen to highly biased CNN, and it won’t get any better until I return home Thursday afternoon.

I’ve caught Air Force #2 land in D.C. from California. I saw the exchange from a hearsh to the caisson, and a few blocks movement down the street. Most of all I’ve seen in the faces of people, young and old, a longing for the past. A desire to remember a hero since we have none these days.

Most people are bigger in death than in life. There is a common denominator that I sense in most people and that’s a reaching out for something intangible: something greatly needed in this season of “terrorism”. I think it’s HOPE! And, a lot more. Could it be spiritual?

I remember the phrase, “Tell me your certainties, I have enough doubts of my own.” As I wrote last Saturday, the political oxygen would be consummed for two weeks as we try and cope with this loss. For many, it’s akin to the loss of a dad or mom. An anchor in our political soul has been lost: a road map of our past travels has escaped the bonds of this planet.

Thursday will be interesting, but Friday wil be a day to remember. So, I’m headed home later this morning, resting up, and getting ready for more insights on our American psyche that’s sure to be revealed Friday.

WHAT’S NEXT FICKLE FATE?

June 8, 2005

It’s been a tough week for the Democrats. As I wrote last Saturday, just minutes before Ronald Reagan died, no one is in control of fate, and fate has a plan of it’s own.

The Democrats were riding high in the saddle. Bush was out of the country celebrating D-Day, and thereby reminding people of WARS! Who needs more of that? Out of the blue- BANG!

Reagan dies and the world is now fixed on not just the man, but the PRINCIPLES that smell much like those that George Bush embraces (though he’s no Reagan). A whole week of political rhetoric goes to the Republicans. And all the TV exposure is FREE!

And if things weren’t bad enough, now the U.N. Security Council votes 15-0 to recognize the new Iraqi government. Now what do the Democrats harp on? Oh yeah- partisanship! They are not letting Bill Clinton speak at the funeral on Friday. Speaking of which, the stock markets in America shut down Friday, and America has a wildly emotional day.

Odds are that come next week, Bush is now back to even in the polls versus Kerry. So, what hand will fate deal which party the following week? We shall see won’t we.

PS. Did I mention that traveling by plane when it’s storming is crazy? I made it to San Antonio in a little over five hours Tuesday. I could have driven in half the time and save a hundred!

TERRORISTS & BARBARIANS!

June 7, 2005

I had a double major in college. As I remember, 34 hours of political science and 33 hours of history. It took 30 hours for qualify for a major. But, it’s the 4 hours of Calculus that I’ll always have nightmares about.

One of the things that I was always interested in was how fast the Roman Empire fell, from such great heights. Even back in the 60′s, many were comparing Rome to America. Their bible was Edwards Gibbons, The Decline & Fall Of The Roman Empire, which covered the period of 180-490.

Many historians agree that Rome fell because of an economic decline (excessive debt), moral decay (sexual perversion), disunity (Republicans vs. Democrats), excessive greed and gratification (debt), and mass migration. What’s that last one?

In Europe, the influx of Muslims are dictating how they see the world. In North America, the influx of Hispancis from South America is dictating how we do business. I like the latter a lot better.

The great historian, Gibbons, said their were five reasons Rome fell. The destruction of the family (divorce), excessive taxes, craze for sports, decadence of the people, and the decay of religion!

OUCH!

Finally, let me add this, since it’s a new concept. Rome didn’t fight nations. They fought what they called “barbarians”. Can you say “terrorists”. Kinda scary when you think about it, isn’t it? Maybe we need to embrace again- Prov. 14:34: or Ps. 33:12!

I HAVE LOTS OF QUESTIONS!

June 6, 2005

By now, you have heard about every accolade that can be bestowed on a person. I am not even going to try and repeat or add to the incredible individual praises that Ronald Reagan deserved- or Nancy! They were a real COUPLE! Truly.

What I will ask is this. Is there to be another Ronald Reagan? Will America be able to produce another man who will stand up for what is right, for the principles of GOOD and not EVIL? Is there a man that can call a spade a spade (tear that wall down!) and mean it?

Is there a man who will turn off the cameras and allow blind kids to rubs their hands over his face so that they can “know” a president, and not make it a political media event? Ronald Reagan did.

Is there a man that can go against the tide, stand up to the majority, and do what is right in face of overwhelming odds? And, be re-elected? Or was Ronald Reagan a man just for his time? Was he another Audie Murphy?

Due to the way we fight wars these days, it’s nearly impossible for a man to win 33 medals as Audie Murphy did. And in the news media crazed-culture, global world, and internet, can a President go against the media, U.N. and world, and win a second term? We’ll know in about five months.

On June 20th, we celebrate Audie Murphy day in Texas. What will we be celebrating come January 20, 2005? Or will we be celebrating at all?

ONLY FATE CAN TELL!

June 5, 2005

Man makes his plans but fate deals the hands. All we can hope to do is play our cards (the hand in life that we are dealt) as best as we can.

In this highly critical and important election year, politicians and pollsters are doing their best to arrange a smooth landing for their candidates. Very much like Hollywood scheduling the release of a movie, if done too far in advance, many things can derail the best laid plans.

Bush was riding on an Iraqi high until along came the prison abuse scandal and for weeks now, he’s been on the defensive. The Democrats have been harping on the terrible economy, which as chance would have it, is turning out to be a non-issue (currently).

When should they release Bill Clinton’s book? Would it take away from Kerry’s momentum- distractions, distractions. The handover in July, in Iraq. Will that overshadow the Democratic momentum? Does the ire of the Iraq war die down if the U.N. agrees to a Bush initiative? How much impact will the Bush trip to France this weekend have?

And now there is this. When will Ronald Reagan die? Next week, next month? Of all the things to have happen in an election year, this is not good news for the Democrats. The death of any president will suck the oxygen out of the political landscape for a good two weeks. And since Reagan was such a popular, strong figure, his death close to the Democratic convention, is certainly not good news- for Kerry.

Ah, the gods! What to do with them? Fate! Who can comprehend it? Maybe the answer is Prov. 25:2.

PS. Ten minutes after writing the above, Ronald Reagan died.

THE GOOD, BAD, & THE UGLY

June 4, 2005

Friday’s employment report for May set the Democrats back a bit. There were 248,000 new jobs added to the market place. April was revised upwards showing 356,000 added. So, that brings job creation so far in 2004 to 1.2 million.

Does anyone remember the standard stump speech everywhere the Democrats went? Here it is: Bush loses more jobs while in office then Hoover! You are hearing it less because if the trend continues for 5 more months, it won’t be a fact. GOOD NEWS!

But then we also find out that factory orders fell a big 1.7% (biggest drop of the year). And durable goods were revised to show a 3.2% decline (worst since 2002). So, are things slowing down just as they seemed to be getting into high gear again? No matter what you think, this is truly BAD NEWS!

And then there was the UGLY! It didn’t have anything to do with our economy or even our nation. I am talking about the demonstrations in Italy where Bush visited the Pope: who basically said Americans were selfish, hedonistic, and outright immoral. And the point is?

Back to the UGLY. More than 500,000 people (primarily kids) screamed, threw rocks, shook sticks in the air, and wore ski masks so no one would recognize them. Thousands of police beat them back with tear gas and great numbers. It seemed at times that there were more reporters and press in the melee than demonstrators.

Of course that’s to be expected. The press is always where UGLY lives. And, if UGLY is sleeping, the press will wake him up (I think it’s a him, who can tell these days) and start something so they can sell more newspapers, hawk more magazines and profit from more pictures.

JUST REPORT THE FACTS PLEASE

June 3, 2005

When it was announced that George Tenet had resigned Thursday morning, I shut off the TV and just listened to music the rest of the day. I did not want to waste my time hearing everyone’s “expert” opinion about why he really resigned.

Before I could do it, Nancy Pelosi came on, and from her Democratic perch in California, she opined that more people should resign in light of the massive security failures.

I also thought, how will the left-leaning Houston Chronicle handle it? What lead line would they go with? How about the facts? How about something like George Tenet Resigns? Or maybe, George Tenet Announces Surprise Resignation? That would be too simple and the truth! So, when I got up this morning and picked the paper off my front lawn, there it was, “George Tenet Resigns In Advance Of 9/11 Report”!

And, he resigned in advance of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year. But the implication of the headline is that a “guilty man” has resigned. And the first sentence reinforced their liberal bias by saying , “He was the highest ranking casualty”. Blah, blah, blah.

Guilty by OPINION. Guilty by SPIN. Guilty by a press that is supposed to report the facts, and leave opinion to the Editorial Comment or Opt-Ed section. Not the Chronicle!

WHAT’S THE OBJECTIVE?

June 2, 2005

I’ve recently come across the expression, “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer” several times in the last 2-3 days. While we can’t have drinks with UBL or take in a movie with top al-Qaeda operatives, we sure need to THINK like they do: or try.

So, what’s their objective? I am sure it’s in the “plural”. A few things we know about terrorism is that the objective is to get people to cower and live in fear. Killing people sure helps that cause. And, doing something “spectacular” even magnifies the fear.

But, UBL understands America better than does most Americans. I think he probably knows our economic system better than Alan Greenspan but, that’s another story. If I’m right then he knows our economic life is truly tried to OIL!

We’ve seen the impact of $40 oil recently and it’s UGLY! I believe we’re seeing a strategy develop to impede the supply of oil from Saudi Arabia. Hey, there are only about 5,000 royal sheiks and prince’s in all of Saudi Arabia. Kill them and take the country back. Remember, UBL was born in Saudi Arabia.

And then there’s this statement he made a few months ago. “You steal our oil and our wealth at paltry prices because of your international influence and military threats. This theft is the biggest by mankind in the history of the world.”

I’d say Saudi Arabia is in big trouble. And, while other options are on the table, I believe disrupting the flow of oil would do more to cripple our economy than 9-11 did (with longer lasting impact).
