IT’S A CAT AND MOUSE GAME!

September 23, 2005

It’s hard to believe that I am older than Cat Stevens, or should I say Yusef Islam? I never really got into his music and evidently I share none of his philosophical or religious beliefs. Of course he’s upset because he got hauled off of a plane for being on a terrorist list. Does giving to Hamas merit such behavior, or is it just his new wardrobe?

Whatever, I’ve come recently to live by a phrase that says so much more than the eleven words that make up the thought. Napoleon Hill said that “no one can escape the responsibility for the position they find themselves in life.” But deeper yet is this phrase.

Things ARE as they ARE, because they WERE as they WERE! Thnk about it.

Now to the “mouse”, aka JFK. No longer had Prime Minister Allawi said “thank you” to America, and proclaimed that things were getting better in Iraq, than JFK came out denouncing anything and everything Allawi said: even if he didn’t say it!

It appears to me that a man who is risking his life every minute of the day, one who is living in Iraq, is an Iraqi, and one who is living the real life, is far more qualified to say how things really are than a man who is half a world away, and running for President. It is more than obvious that JFK is painting huimself into a corner where he’s betting his candidacy on things being terrible, and getting worse, in Iraq.

What a ‘mousy’ approach on this day of the cat (Stevens story).

LESSONS LEARNED & UNLEARNED

September 23, 2005

My heart breaks for those that experienced the hell of Katrina. Easy to say that as we in Houston are hunkered-down waiting for Rita to do something, somewhere. Just being able to “anticipate” hell’s fury gives one a sense of the reality. Continue Reading »

FROM THE ECONOMY TO THE WAR!

September 22, 2005

As a student of politics, a political science major, and avid political observer, I am amazed that JFK and his corner men have decided to make the election about the war and not the economy. Of course, knowing JFK’s background- that could change between now and Nov. 2nd.

I have to go back to one of my earlier commentaries for the only answer. He’s been running for president all his life and up until now, he’s always run and won, based on his Viet Nam heroics: which have never been seriously challenged until he decided to be the Commander-In-Chief.

The Democrats are trying to make it look like another Viet Nam as well. From their view, it is the same: dissent and more dissent. But, from the Republican side of the isle, Bush is no Lyndon Johnson.

Iraqi Prime Minister Allawi spoke to Congress and the world this morning, giving a vastly different view than that which we have been getting from our media. He began with making three statements. We are winning, thank you America, and we the Iraqi people, are better off because Saddam Hussein is gone.

So, put that in your pipe and smoke it- dissenters!

If Bush needed a boost, he got it from Allawi this morning. As he spoke to Congress, one couldn’t help but feel GOOD about what we’ve done to free 25+ million people. It’s been long overdue since we heard some GOOD NEWS: and this from a man who lives with death threats every minute of his life!

LIVING IN TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS

September 21, 2005

Wednesday was an interesting day. You might not be surprised to know that I was somewhat fixed on a disturbance in the Gulf called hurricane Rita. The most intense, strongest, biggest and baddest hurricane to ever hit Texas and the third most power hurricane in history was headed for Galveston-Houston. Continue Reading »

KERRY HAS TAKEN THE GLOVES OFF

September 21, 2005

Today was Kerry’s “coming out” day according to his ring and corner “handlers”. He’s in the ring and ready to mix it up, dish it out, and let ‘er roll! Adviser and former White House spokesman for Bill Clinton, Bill McCurry said, “this was a speech he needed to give.” So, we’re now headed to a classic, Conservative-Liberal war!

Okay, so we now have yet another approach to Iraq and the world- or is it the old Howard Dean role that played so well in Democrat-ville? One thing is for sure, Kerry knows he’s lost ground, and is being backed into the corner. Is there any other way out, but to fight?

According to what I see, there are currently (as of today) TEN states where the polls show 3% of less difference in the two men. Those the account for 133 electoral votes. Three of those states LEAN towards Kerry: Oregon 3%, Michigan 3%, and Minnesota 1% for 34 electoral votes.

Six of the states LEAN to Bush: Ohio 3%, Wisconsin 2%, Florida 2%, Iowa, Neveda, Colorado, and Pennsylvania 1% each for a total of 99 electoral votes. Then there’s New Mexico as a virtual tie. Those ten states can waver from one camp to the other in a day’s time, especially when five of them are only seperated by 1% point.

So, according to Kerry, the FIGHT is on! I thought it had been “going on’ for months now but what do I know? I don’t even know who Lucy Ramirez is, and she lives in Houston. Wonder if that’s an alias?

A BRIEF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS

September 20, 2005

As expected Alan Greenspan raised rates for the 11th time. Have you ever wondered why eleven raises? Why not 3 or 4 bold moves? Why? Because Alan has proven to be the consumate politician. Clinton liked him, Bush liked him, and almost everybody was in awe of him- until recently. He’s been a disaster for our economy and we’ll see just how badly when he leaves in a few months. LIVING UP TO THE BILLING!

September 20, 2005

As I said in yesterday’s commentary, this week was going to be a “humdinger” and Monday has verified that. I don’t know what Dan Rather is going to do or say down the road, but what I do know is that the CBS’s admission that “they can’t authenticate the memos” doesn’t go nearly far enough!

The ‘admission’ does NOT admit to guilt, side-steps and responsibility from CBS, and doesn’t say the memos are a forgery- just that they can’t tell if they are real enough. Get the point? They are white-washing the story in hopes that it will go away.

And of course, they are leaving the public with the thought that the story is still true- it’s just the documents that are wrong. Let’s see now. The PROOF isn’t there, but the accusation is true? Wow. Journalism #101 sure has changed.

I am writing this as I watch Dan Rather’s 5:30 news. The first two “lead lines” are the beheading in Iraq, and Kerry’s attack on Bush. Hmmm. And then the weeak-meek, apology- of sorts! I’m headed back to Fox, where O’Reilley is going to interview George Bush sometime this week.

Oh yes, both sides finally agreed to three debates, moving the 3rd one (on foreign policy) to the Sept. 30th slot: the first one.

WHAT A WEEK COMING UP……

September 19, 2005

Can the old ticker handle six more weeks of this political intensity? We shall see; however, if you thought last week was a humdinger, check out the schedule ahead.

Dan Rather was seen in Dallas Saturday and now we know why. He went to interview the suspected memo-gate author: Bill Burkett. Dan Rather is out to cleanse his image (is that possible) and so he’s supposedly going to ‘air’ the interview with Burkett later this week. That brings up some ineresting possibilities that I won’t venture into now.

Kerry has let it be known that instead of the economy, he feels that Bush is vulnerable on the Iraq war and so he’s going to spend the next six weeks on Iraq. Great, now more Swiftees, and Guard stories. And with John McCain saying on network TV Sunday that he felt Bush could be more ‘forthcoming’ on what’s happening in Iraq- expect the Democrats to use that line for political fodder.

Bush heads before the the United Nations to do his annual ‘thing’ and to encourage the ‘do-nothings’ to do ’something’. Good luck!

And then we have the electoral vote flap. Colorado has placed on the ballot for November a measure that would allow their “electoral vote” to be split based upon the % of the popular vote. In other words, whoever won the popular vote (55-45% say) would not give all NINE electoral votes, but 5 of the 9! Talk about messing things up.

It appears to me that the Republicans might come out ahead in 2004 because California and New York would not get all of their electoral votes going to the Democrats. Those 86 votes would be divided among the Republicans in about a 36-50 allocation. But, the Republicans would not get all 34 of the Texas votes either. They would get something more akin to a 19-15 allocation.

I doubt that we’ll see any changes this year, but it’s coming. Just in case I am wrong, and the election is close, Colorado could be the Florida of 2004. Are their 9 electoral votes all for the winner or just 5? Considering that Colorado voters are currently split 47-47%, who knows.

Oh yes, and then there’s the House and Senate! Remember them? Later this week I will give you my thoughts on how all of that might turn out: considering it’s somewhat important to the political process.

And, did I mention that the Fed is meeting Tuesday with an eye to increasing interest rates? :-)

WHAT A FINE MESS WE’RE IN OLLIE!

September 19, 2005

Ray Nagin had another taste of “crow” today as he backed off of his “repopulation” program for New Orleans. And then he had to advise some of those that had come back in to get back out! What a mayor! If I know anything it’s that neither Bush or his lead man in New Orleans is going to take any marching orders from Ray! Hey Ray- even the repaired levees are leaking! POLITICS MAKES STRANGE BEDFELLOWS

September 18, 2005

For me, it’s been strange seeing Bush #41 and Clinton heading out to solve the ills created by the Tsunami. But once again they team up to raise funds for Katrina victims. You see Clinton playing golf with Bush #41 and #43. It’s like, can this be real? Ahh, but now we know. Continue Reading »

2 FAST & 2 FURIOUS - PART B

September 17, 2005

I doubt that many, if any, of my readers saw the movie Fast & Furious or the sequel, 2 Fast & 2 Furious. Well, neither did I. However, those titles came to mind as I was contemplating what’s happening this weekend.

George Bush is up 9-11 points in two major national polls. Say it isn’t so, but, he’s close in New Jersey, ahead in Minnesota and Ohio, and pulling away in Florida. Wow! Ahh, but that’s just the openers.

The Florida Supreme Court said Nader could be on the ballot. Can a Kerry supporter ever get a break? Two hurricanes are headed to Florida before the first presidential debate there. Why have a debate? Every week Bush is there giving out BILLIONS in hurricane money: talk about “buying” an election.

Bush will be on Bill OReilley next week while Kerry goes 37 days without a press conference. Wonder why? Is Bush really hiding his troop plans as Kerry says? And would it be smart to tell the world what we’re doing months in advance anyway?

Memo-gate just won’t go away and it appears that Dan Rather may have to before it does. Those pesky Swiftboat veterans have posted their fourth commercial while MoveOn.Org counters with a defeated American soldier sinking in the desert sands: defeated. Does anyone want to see this kind of advertising? Is anyone thinking?

I could go on, but you get the drift. As we approach the six week marker (before the election), things are really getting downright crazy: too fast, too furious!

HERE IS WHAT I AM THINKING-

September 16, 2005

I’ve wondered ever since Bill Clinton advised JFK to quit talking about Viet Nam, why he’s refused to take that advice. Yes, James Carville has come on board and he’s a “red-meat” kind of a guy. And, it seems that Terry McAuliffe (DNC Chairman), is hellbent to make Viet Nam an issue as well.

Why? I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s because the MAIN MAN (JFK) wants it that way. Rupert Sheldrake said it this way, “Things are as they are, because they were as they were”.

You see, (my conspiracy theory) Kerry went to Viet Nam, took pictures of his exploits (?), came back to the U.S., and promptly began his political career (albeit it trashing our gov.). And ever since 1971, he has run for political office ON HIS MILITARY EXPLOITS! Whoever opposed him could not tout 3 Purple Hearts, A Bronze this, or a Silver that!

So, he won and he won. But, the lay of the land has now changed. He’s running to be Commander-In-Chief of the entire military. The Swiftboat vets could care less that he was one of one hundred in the Senate, but, to be THE MAN at the top: no way!

So, Viet Nam has stayed in the limelight because it is what brought JFK victories in the past. He’s the MAN, the MACHO MAN, and everyone else is a reservist, Guard, or less. I’m thinking this line may not work for the current position he’s running for, seven weeks from now, we’ll know.

MAYBE ONE DAY OF UNITY!

September 16, 2005

Several Senators met in New Orleans on Friday and found to their amazement that they all agreed that the destruction of the Gulf Coast went well beyond their imaginations. Both Republicans (Frist) and Democrats (Reid) joined hands in unity- for a DAY! Continue Reading »

COMPASSIONATE & CONSERVATIVE?

September 15, 2005

He campaigned on the theme of being a compassionate conservative. But when he took that title he didn’t forsee 9-11 nor Katrina. Who could have. As I listened to George Bush on Thursday night, I could see why gold was now at a new recent high and nearing a seventeen year high!. I could see why interest rates were going up. And, I could see why the debt was piling up. Continue Reading »
