SOME WEEKS ARE JUST HARD!

October 16, 2005

How bad can this week be for Bush? Don’t ask! It appears that there will be good news out of Iraq. Initial results have the Constitution passing in all eighteen areas. Bush will need it. Continue Reading »

IF FOR NO OTHER REASON…..

October 15, 2005

When Teresa Heinz Kerry finally released her income tax report showing that she paid three-quarters of a million dollars in income tax last year, on some $4+ million of income-revenue, two thoughts came to me.

John Kerry did indeed “marry-up” as he said in the last debate. We all knew that. How can anyone not marry-up when your wife is a BILLIONAIRE. I’m not sure all of what John Kerry was looking for, but I know what he found. But, I digress.

The first thought was, how can she relate to anyone having lived in such wealth for as long as she has. And then it came to me, she can’t! And that led me in to my second thought.

People are saying that more women are voting for Bush this year than in 2000. They attribute it to the fact that we now have more “soccer moms” who are concerned about security issues. Really! While that may be true, I think more women are voting for Bush because of Laura.

I can imagine many things, but having Teresa Heinz Kerry as “first lady” isn’t one of them. So then, if for no other reason than his wife is Teresa, I’d have a hard time voting for Kerry. JFK and Bush may be miles apart in ideology, but Laura and Teresa and light years apart in lifestyles. One can relate to mainstream America, while the other has not a clue!

PS. Minnesota, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Florida, Ohio, Nevada, Iowa, Colorado, and Wisconsin are all within 2 points difference as of Saturday polling. These nine states represent 131 electoral votes and currently are the battleground states for the last two weeks.

THE DRAGON THAT LURKS BELOW

October 15, 2005

As I watch a bit of television today, I am amazed at what’s happening. In Toledo, Ohio crowds protesting a Nazi rally have gone crazy: rioting, throwing rocks at police, breaking into businesses, and setting fire to residential homes. I still have fresh memories of New Orleans criminal activity, and here we go yet again. Continue Reading »

THE ANTHESIS OF THE TRINITY

October 14, 2005

The operable description of the trinity is three in one and one in three. Try as they might today, a trinity is not going to come out of the Iraq elections today. I do believe the constitution will pass. The Sunni’s got just enough meat on the bone to make the proposal fly. Continue Reading »

EVERYTHING BUT THE SURPRISES!

October 14, 2005

We’ve all managed to survive eighteen months of non-stop debate. Does anyone remember when Howard Dean was running away with the Democratic bid? We’ve now had the three debates. So, anything that is said about one candidate from the other won’t have to be brought up against each other in a face to face encounter. So, let it rip!

The gloves will come off in the remaining two and a half weeks. Some would probably ask, when were they ever on? The Republican Convention stopped what looked to be a Kerry win- and the debates stopped what looked to be a Bush victory. As a result ALL of the polls have tightened. Once again, forget the national popular polls, concentrate on the dozen swing states- maybe just a half dozen: Florida, Ohio (Bush must win states), Wisconsin, Minnesota (Kerry must win states), Iowa, and Colorado (whoever needs them the most).

Florida and Ohio were 3-6 points up for Bush before the debates, now Bush is up by 1-2 percentage points. In other words, both states are back in play. The other half dozen that could make a surprise visit to one camp or the other include: Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Nevada, Michigan, Missouri, and West Virginia (all six lean 2-4 points in one camp or the other).

How all of this shakes out is anyone’s guess, but I’m still banking on an “October Surprise”. I’m not talking a smear story by one camp or the other, directed at their opponent; but, something that neither camp controls. Just ask Bill O’Reilly about that. The war in Iraq, a terrorist attack here or there, and UBL lead the way as potential candidates still.

In the meantime, hunker down for some good old fashioned slugfests. Both candidates: both halves of our nation have much at stake in the next four years.

A GOOD MAN’S DEMISE- OR RISE?

October 13, 2005

Admittedly the jury is still out, George W. Bush still has three years and three months to establish his legacy; however, the going has sure been rough to date. If we could use a baseball analogy, and living in Houston (go Astros), we should, Bush has had two plate appearances in this game called his presidency. Continue Reading »

BUSH WAS A CLEAR WINNER!

October 13, 2005

On this debate I “judged” each question, from a debate perspetive. I saw it as follows: Bush won 12 questions, Kerry won 2, and there were 5 ties! Whatever the press may or may not say, Bush creamed Kerry. And remember, I thought that Kerry won both of the first two debates, so this isn’t a prejudicial viewpoint.

Bush had Kerry on the run: on the defensive. Bush was sharp, engaging, and about as confident as I have ever seen him. It’s almost as though this Bush was a totally different person than the Bush of the first debate! Instead of Bush on the defensive, it was Kerry!

Bush came up with some great lines that appeared to be spontaneous like: bait-n-switch, pay as you go wherein we pay and the liberals go, etc. One of the best lines was when Bush said “There is a mainstream America, and Kerry is on the far left bank of that stream.” And then he followed it up with calling the “other” Senator from Mass.(Kennedy) as being a conservative compared to Kerry! And, you can’t argue with the FACT: Kerry is the most liberal Senator in America!

And then there were the moral questions about abortion, faith, and gays. The one time I heard the crowd was when Kerry spoke about Cheney’s lesbian daughter- and the press picked up on it as well. What a low blow for political purposes.

So, the only question for me is, how many people were watching the Astros and Red Sox lose versus watching Kerry lose. Now, it’s on to the remaining 19 days of this slugfest!

PS. Kerry’s attempt to make you think he passed 56 bills in his 20 years is a total falsehood. Only five, small-time bills, are recorded in the halls of history as having been sponsored by Kerry and passed into law.

WILL THE STOCK MARKET CRASH?

October 12, 2005

If I could answer that question with 100% accuracy, I wouldn’t have to ever work again. The real answer is that yes one day it will: what year that day falls in is another matter. What I do know for sure though is that there are a lot of dark storm clouds on the economic horizon. Don’t take a crash too lightly. Could one happen by the end of the year? I give it 50-50 odds. THE SUPER HYPE IS ON!

October 12, 2005

Heading into Wednesday nights debate, the hype is beyond definition. Kerry and his generals are feeling they have the election in the bag. Remember they say, Kerry is the CLOSER and he’s going to deliver the knock-out punch Wednesday night!

And what about John Edward’s claims? And I quote him here, “We will stop Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and other debilitating diseases. When John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to get up out of that wheelchair and WALK again.” How about those comments for campaign promises. Can Bush top that?

I’m not even sure that God would DO, let alone SAY such things. But of coruse, God isn’t running for election to anything. When you’re running for the presidency, you can say anything because if you don’t get elected, it’s a mute point. And if you do get elected, you can blame your failures on the Republican majority in the Congress!

Just when you think you’ve heard it all, think again. The promises and hype over the next 19 days can only get more wild and crazy!

THE TWO MINUTE DRILL BEGINS

October 11, 2005

Sometimes a football game can be boring until the last two minutes. How many times have we seen a team barely move the ball until the two minute warning, and then both teams go up and down the field like a hot knife through butter. Why couldn’t they do that the previous firty eight minutes?

How about because they didn’t have to: there was no need to!

In this political race, the latest Washington Post poll shows Bush leading by six. The Zogby poll shows Kerry leading by three. Up until this week there was agreement on who was leading; however, with less than three weeks to go, we suddenly have a problem: both teams are behind! So, we’ve got to expect a furious two-minute drill on both teams part. Expect the unexpected, some never before used plays, and probably a hail-Mary along the way.

Michael Moore is planning on having Fahrenheit 9/11 shown on TV on election eve. The Sinclair group is planning on airing “Stolen Honor” on their 64 TV stations (The Democrats are suing to keep it off the air). George Soros is throwing in $25 million for some last minute efforts for the Democrats. Kerry’s old book is going to make it into the forefront before November 2nd. And God only knows what else is coming.

Bottom line. If you thought the “political game” was exciting up til now, wait until you see what happens in the last two minute drill that’s about to begin.

THE CONDESCENDING FAR RIGHT

October 11, 2005

It’s been an interesting ten days. Ever since George Bush nominated Harriet Miers for the Supreme Court, the far right has been revealing their self righteous persona that makes them a minority. Continue Reading »

ONLY THREE WEEKS TO GO

October 10, 2005

This time next week, I will have voted! Early voting begins next week in Houston and I can’t wait to finally get to have “my say” after what seems like 4 four years of political campaigning. So, let’s review where things are, as I see them.

The most kind people give Bush a tie in the second debate (I’m not one of them) and that’s what I hope for in Tempe, Arizona Wednesday, in the last debate. You can count on it being a mud-slinging event; and then you can count on it getting much worse in the last 20 days.

What has happened since the debates began, is a tightening of the race. Nationwide, Bush took his 7-10 point lead, and fell to a 2-4 point lead; however, that’s not what’s important. It’s the electoral vote! Remember the Alamo, I mean the Florida recount!

If you use the 5% margin of error as a “toss-up”, then you’re left with Bush at 240 electoral votes and Kerry at 179. So, we have ten states left to argue over: providing nothing BIG happens in the next three weeks to sway those “safe” states. Don’t bet your home on it.

States in that “toss up” category include New Mexico (5), Minnesota (10), Nevada (2), Iowa (7), Wisconsin (3),
Michigan (4), Colorado (9), Virginia (5), Maine (5), and New Jersey (15). Most of those states “at risk” belonged to Gore in 2000, so Kerry is still in an uphill battle. Most of those states were a “given” six months ago (for Kerry), but now he has to fight to keep them.

But, almost everyone believes it comes down to two states! Bush must win both Florida and Ohio! Florida fell into his column (6% lead) after the hurricanes, but Ohio shows Bush with only a slim 2% lead, which means, you can’t count on it!

So, watch Ohio to get the most attention in the last three weeks of the campaign- and watch out for flying bricks, stones, and sticks!

DEFINITELY VERY DIFFERENT DAYS

October 10, 2005

Yes, the weather in Houston is no longer the unbearable 95 degrees in October as it was a couple of days ago. And for us on the West side of town, where Rita brought no relief to a month of no rain, my garden got a natural soaking Monday. And the first bud appeared on one of my tomato plants to say thank you. Continue Reading »

IT IS STILL AN …. “ACT OF GOD”

October 9, 2005

Katrina and Rita confirmed what we knew was happening in America; a transition from an Act of God to an Act Of Negligence. Someone has to be blamed for stuff happening to me that I don’t like. America has become so dependent upon the government through hand outs and entitlement programs that we think we are just naturally “entitled” to anything and everything. Maybe we could get a clue from this weekend- from abroad. Continue Reading »
