IS THE TOP NOW IN?
March 23, 2006
The stock market not only looks very tired, but exhausted. My guess is that Wednesday was the top for a season, and maybe for the year? Well, that would be a wild guess, but who knows. Continue Reading »
SO, WHAT ELSE IS HAPPENING?
March 22, 2006
That thing which Alan Greenspan has been denying for so long is now being acknowledged. Yes Martha, we do have concerns over INFLATION. Do tell? As a result of the Feds recognition, interest rates rose, the US$ strengthened, and gold dropped.
And the stock market tanked even further. The Dow is now down over 300 points for the year and the Nasdaq is down almost 200 points. Seems as though no one is making money except the brokers who get some coming and going (as you buy and sell). In a few weeks, everyone who is not aware of the economic stagnation we’re in, will find out when they get their 401k quarterly summations.
Iraq is quietly falling off the front pages of metro newspapers as most of the klling is of the Sunni-Shiite nature, otherwise known as Arab-on-Arab killing.
Columbine was brought back to our memories when the largest school killings took place in Red Lake, Minnesota. A sixteen year old student somehow lost it (reading his history will give everyone a clue) and killed ten people: including himself. Makes one wonder even more about just how safe our public school system is these days.
Everyone’s attention is still focused on Florida though. The first Federal judge to rule did as I expected, but who knows what the next line up of judges will do with the appeal. Some days it’s just a waste of time to watch or hear the news. Which begs the question: does there have to be news every day?
NOT YOUR DADDY’S DEMOCRACY!
March 21, 2006
President Bush has declared a couple of dozen times, if not more, that democracy is a gift of God. But what does that GIFT look like, and who is defining democracy anyway? Continue Reading »
WEANING MYSELF FROM SCHIAVO
March 21, 2006
Okay, I can’t do four days in a row of the Terri Schiavo mess. So, I am going to try and back off and look at the bigger picture. I’ve already said that I feel Bush and the Republicans are playing political football with the lives of a family in Florida.
Come on, who’s ever heard of Congress being called back into session, let alone flying the President back to the White House, and waking him up in the middle of the night to sign a bill into law that never should have been inacted? One would be hard-pressed to find anything like it even in a time of war! All this fuss to try and meddle in the life of one person? Morality and politics: what a hot ticket!
I cannot imagine there being any way that any Federal judge could validate such action. Of course, what do I know? These are strange times. I see Randall Terry being the Schiavo family mouth piece, I see Bush and the Republicans pushing this string, and I see all the people I have stood beside for years, now on the other side of the aisle. Did my party leave me? Am I nuts?
Oh yes, and I am not bringing into play her medical-health status. For me that is secondary, to be left to doctors, not the politicians. Do you think those supporting the bill would be satisfied with an MRI? Let her die in dignity. Doctors say her brain is mush and there won’t be any feeling of pain. Opps, there I went! Jesus waited four days to call Lazarus forth. I don’t think HE would wait for eighteen years!
Who knows when the judge will render a decision. There’s no rush. She’s had that feeding tube removed before- a week I think. This is not new territory other than the precedence that’s been set. Bush said that the law was formulated so that it would NOT set a precedence. Yeah, right!
So, as the nation, press, Congress, and president await word from Judge James Whittmore’s court, other things are happening. The FOMC meets tomorrow adn you can count on your monthly interest rates going up. The Fed is still artificially keeping interest rates below inflation. To not do so would cause a recession, at best. And maybe there’s nothing that can be done to change that. The Dow, Nasdaq, and S&P500 are all three in the red- and getting more red!
How’d I do on my transition from the Schaivo case? Yeah, I know, pretty pathetic!
TERRY SCHIAVO DEBATE CONTINUES
March 20, 2006
While most focus on the Michael Jackson trial, this is day three for me on Terry Schiavo. As I said yesterday, we have a real hot one here. It’s the Feds versus the State and roles have been reversed. The Republicans who are for limited government and champion State rights, are doing the unimaginable. And I can’t wait to see how this plays out.
Sunday, House Democrats blocked the Republican attempt to ram through a bill that would throw the Schiavo debate into the Federal courts. And here is Tom Delay upset and proclaiming that the Democrats have stopped her from having two meals! Amazing.
So, all of Congress that had departed for their Easter recess have had to turn around and come back to D.C. Even the President changed his plans and flew from Crawford to the White House to sign a bill that is not. Can you imagine the tens and probably HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of dollars that have been spent just so Congress could intervene in a domestic dispute in Florida? The parents want her alive and the ex-husband wants it over. Who has the best argument?
I know, a woman’s life is at stake. Hey, people’s lives are at stake every minute of the day somewhere in America, but does that give the Federal government the right to selectively change the schedule of the entire Congress, and alter the Constitution? Come on, this is nothing but a political ploy. And Jeb Bush is not going to gain any points with his involvement.
I am afraid this going to be one big messy story with no winners. I am a champion of “life”, but the hypocrisy of the motives and intents stink to high heaven for me. I am afraid we are trying to start some precedents that we can’t stop. Once you open pandora’s box, you must accept whatever comes from it: good or bad.

WE HAVE A HOT ONE NOW!
March 18, 2006
The State of Florida has basically told the Congress what they could do with their subpoena for Terry. And Bill Frist has said what he’ll do if the “little state district court judge” doesn’t comply with his subpoena. Let the battle rage. It’s a battle that created our nation, and it is one that is always delicately balanced.
It’s the Federal vs. State issue. Both have degrees and areas of sovereignity; however, in this particular case, I believe there is something even more basically fundamental at stake: common sense, motive, and the spirit of the law.
Common sense says a Terry Schiavo cannot testify: everyone knows that! Those who issued the subpoena don’t want to talk to her, they simply want to delay her death: their motive is not consistent with their action. Finally, the spirit of the law is being broken, most probably for political reasons.
If Terry should die or not, and how, I profess not to know; however, the ruse being used by DeLay and Frist is in my mind a totally dangerous precedent that I hope is not upheld. Yep, we have a hot one here.
IS CONGRESS BRAIN DEAD TOO?
March 17, 2006
I am going to try and NOT vent this morning. As I came in and read the first couple of headlines, I had to shake my head in wonder.Drudge had red letters saying that Congress might request that Terry Schiavo appear before a Congressional committee. Why is the House issuing a subpoena in this matter?
I am sure that you have heard of her plight. While her story is a tragic one, why is Congress getting involved in a private matter in Florida with a stupid ploy like a subpoena to a person that can’t talk? I could tell you why, but some kids do read this site. Where’s Congress when two million babies are aborted each year? I won’t go there.
Then the other thing that made me shake my head was the drilling in Alaska issue. It’s all about trying to get attention and pleasing the environmentalists. The vote in the Senate was a close 51-49 to do it.
What’s amazing is that they don’t get that IF we could drill for ALL the oil in the world, we could not have it REFINED. Our old worn out refineries are running at 100% efficiency and breaking down. Why? Those same Senators who voted against the Alaska drilling don’t want any refineries in their area. So, are we going to see $5 a gallon gasoline. Who knows!
Oh yes, and then there’s the church! Oh boy! Seemingly becoming brain dead like Terry and Congress, the bishops of the Episcopal Church have dispatched an emissary to make the point that we should leave the CARIBOU alone. I think Rep. Issa had it right!
CONSPIRACY THEORIES AND MORE

A couple of days ago a Russian diplomat accused the U.S. of purposefully infecting birds with the H5N1 virus. ONE DIES AND ONE IS SET FREE.
March 16, 2006
Ahhh, such is life. Out in the fifth largest economy in the world, Cali-forn-ee-a as their governer calls it, life continues it’s crazy goings-on. Scott Peterson got an ear-full from Laci’s parents, the judge, and then from the system that convicted him. It’s death.
But, don’t get too teared up just yet. Scott didn’t. In fact he came in smirking and looking like the jerk that he had been throughout the trial. He’s now head to the really Big House, where he will be “Dead Man Walking #644″. In California, it takes an average of twenty years from sentence to execution- if that ever happens.
My guess is that one of the other 643 will get a shot at him and someone just may save the state a lot of money by taking him out. San Quentin is not a very hospitable place. And there’s a special fondness for prisoners who kill babies or unborn babies.
On the other side of the ledger Baretta, otherwise known as Robert Blake, got set free from two of the three charges against him and I doubt that state will try to revisit the one count that the jury got hung up on, especially since they were hung up 11-1 to free him. So, after four long years, of which more than a year was spent in jail, without bond, Blake is a free man.
So, what’s a person to do now for entertainment. There’s only one channel left- the Neverland channel. But some say that Jacko is wacko enough for everyone. As the world turns.

THE GODS IN COURT AND OUT!
March 15, 2006
It’s been said in two venues that he grinding is slow but sure. Justice grinds on slowly but surely. Punishment from the gods may seem to take forever, but come they will. Tuesday was another day evidencing it in the court rooms of our legal system.
It also appears that we’ve replaced the prison gates with revolving doors. The false prosperity of the Clinton-Greenspan era is now coming home to roost with many of the barnyard critters. The Domestic Diva just got released and it looks like the World.con king is about to take her place. It won’t be at camp cup-cake and neither will it be for five months. And there will be no ankle bracelets!
You see, Bernie Ebbers is looking at what could be a life sentence, if Federal guidelines are followed. At sixty-three and with a twenty five year prison sentence on the horizon, could he make it out alive at almost 90 years of age?
While that may seem harsh compared to our Domestic Diva, you have to consider that she only made a few bills on her insider stock sale, Bernie Boy turned World.con into the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, and bilked the invesment community of some $11 BILLION and change.
Once we get his appeal and legal wrangling over, we can get closer to home and see what’s up with the victimized Ken Lay. You know that other monster bankrupty called Enron? I’ve forgotten how many BILLIONS they duped people out of.
Many of the people who got duped, stolen from, and financially ruined are rejoicing with the Ebbers verdict The way I look at it, no one should be happy. It’s a tragedy for those who lost money and for those who stole the money, or misappropriated it. But to cheer another’s hurt, pain, and misery is to only insure yours down the road.
Remember, the karmic gods out of court get their day in the sun as well. They grind no less fine.
