FIRST AMENDMENT ABUSES
May 16, 2006
For too long, various groups have hid behind their supposed rights found in the First Amendment. And I am specifically taking about the “freedom of speech” portion.
Journalists have for years picked up this “sacred cow” to allow them to say anything and get away with it. It’s a waste of money to take a newspaper to court for a story that is wrong. If the jury upholds an award against them, a higher court will strike it down:freedom of speech you know!
If a TV station slams someone wrongly, you’ll be hard pressed (can you say near impossible) to win a libel award. But, for me, something needs to be done by the false reporting (can you say irresponsible) that was done by Newsweek a couple of days ago.
There is no way of telling how many people lost their lives as a result of a false and hurried story in order to make a May 23rd deadline and offer a splashy headline. And then to say their was a “mistatement” in the report, but not pull the story all together, only further shows their arrogance and lack of sensitivity.
How do we convince the Muslims that the magazine actually made a mistake and isn’t bowing to White House intimidation? We have enough trouble with our image abroad as it is. We sure don’t need the press fueling the flames with untrue stories.
And what’s the remedy? How can this situation be corrected? Where does responsible journalism begin and first amendment rights end?
IS THERE MORE THAN WORDS?
May 15, 2006
When George Bush became President, I had great hopes; hopes that were primarily based on his character as a person. More than giving lip-service to his faith and beliefs, here was a man who prayed, read the Bible, and a host of other things that would make him a real live “practicing Christian.”
I also knew that he was a shrewd pioliticain backed by an even more smart political strategist- Karl Rove. Nothing wrong with that unless it gets in the way of your core strategies.
I believe it has. I’m sad to say that I had no interest in watching his message tonight. I’m really sick and tired of the political rhetoric. Will we ever just make things simple again? Fine employers who hire illegals. If there are no jobs for illegals, they’ll quit coming.
Having now read the text of his message, I don’t see a lot of solutions: once again, more rhetoric than substance (my take). I’m not thrilled when Bush says that they send back the Hispanics (85% of the total) and they let go the other 15% (the ones most likely to be terrorists).
To say that we are a nation of laws and then to not do anything to enforce the laws for his five plus years in office, I wonder what all that means. I like the phrase, “lawful and welcoming” but how much practicality is there to that statement, beyond the political implications?
And will Congress get their act together and do something- in this year?
WHAT WILL MONDAY BRING?
May 14, 2006
Monday should be a very interesting day, more so than others.
Will the US$ continue to tank after falling into the 8300 level last Friday? And is our government on a path to see it devalued by 25%, meaning you are earning less each month?
Will the stock market rally back after dropping 250+ points the last two trading days? Has the top been set in and we’re now looking at the dog days of summer losses. Last week, I took all of my retirement funds out of the stock market and put it into a money market account. So, you know what I think.
Will gold continue to shine? Can this commodity keep on such a torrid pace? Since I am still buying a coin or two every month, my answer would be yes. Gold has been up $110+ in just thirty days and $300 for the last 360 days. People ask why? Can you say, inflation, US$ devaluation, crisis everywhere, and third-world nations taking back over their natural resouRces?
And then come Monday evening, the Nixon-Saddam Hussein-like poll numbers for Bush seems to have gotten his attention. Hey Bush, terrorism isn’t limited to to Iraq. Protecting our Canadian and Mexican border are national security stuff as well.
Yep, Monday looks exciting.
CITIZENS ACTING LIKE POLITICIANS!
May 14, 2006
Is there any wonder why the politicians in Washington stink up the lace with such pork barrel politics? The people are the same!
It only thakes the announcement of the closing of thirty three major bases and the abolition of some 150 totally to have the people up in arms. Can you name me one city where the local citizens said, “Great, their taking that awful base out of our neighborhood.”
Rumsfeld wasn’t even through giving his reasons why the bases were shutting down until every city with one, was “up in arms” (no pun intended). The headlines in Houston were that we were going to defend our defense! Cute, eh?
The reality of the base closures is that life has changed and we need to change with life. But don’t think reason is going to win the day here. It doesn’t matter how much sense a closing makes, if it hurts the local economy (and they do), then the locals are going to want to keep the base.
We want what we want, regardless of how bad that want may be. This ia a major strategic alteration of our military plans and readiness so that we can compete in the new environment of the twenty-first century.
What is so difficult for any politician of president is to have to lose the political base in an area because of teh decision. Maybe that’s wht Connecticut got the worst deal. No chance of a Republican victory there.
But, being fair, it’s going to be difficult for Thune (Republican) as he told his constituents that he’d make sure all military bases remained in tact if they threw Daschle out. But guess what, Ellsworth Air Force Base is on the list.
But fear not. The list that was presented this weekend won’t be the list that is finally approved. You see, while this is bad news for the president short run, it’s also a wager-stick long run. Bush will probably be able to keep a few bases open- provided the Congressmen in that district support some of Bush’s programs.
Ahh, once again we see the game! And the base closings has shown that the people play it just like the politicains.
A HOLLOW VICTORY AT BEST!
May 12, 2006
After several delays, the Bolton nomination finally got out of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. The composition of the committee is 10 Republicans and 8 Democrats. All the Democrats would need to do was find one Republican that was fed up with the so-called arrogance of Bolton and you have a 9-9 vote. Worse yet, would be to have two Republicans mutiny and squash the nomination.
The Senate is a house full of tradition: one of those traditions is that if you WANT anything you better give the Prez what he wants, especially in the first year of a new term, or your life is going to be one long uphill run. It’s call compromise (the nicer name).
Evidently there were enough Republicans who knew how things worked and yet to be able to vote their conscience, they did something that is rarely done- they voted a straight party line (10-8) to send the nomination to the floor of the Senate with NO recommendation. It’s called CYA in most languages.
Chickens!
So, we’ll see if Bush can get enough Republicans who have been sitting on the sidelines (hoping to not have to vote on Bolton), to take the plunge and say YES to Bolton.
George Voinovich of Ohio, was the most antagonistic Republican, calling Bolton “arrogant” and “bullying.” I can’t wait to hear what some of the other 82 Senators have to say about John. So, Bush has his man a little closer to victory, but just how good of a victory was it- will it be?
When it comes down to a brass-knuckles fight, sometimes a good run is better than a bad stand.
WAS IT BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER?
May 12, 2006
What’s heppend in the last couple of days other than the great weather? Something has changed!
Could it be the 29% approval rating?
I mean 29% is right there with Saddam Hussein and other tyrants. Was it that I said Bush should be impeached last week? Hey, I’m a nobody; however, the nation has come together on the immigration issue. Maybe Bush and the Senate will do the same.
Tipping off the Mexican authorities as to where the Minutemen would be located is downright anti-American, a violation of the constitution, and a loss of trust for anyone but the most left wing ideologue.
I now see that Bush is wanting prime time Monday night to address the nation on immigration and there’s a hint that he’s considering putting troops (national guard) along the border. Bill O’Reilly has been saying that for months.
Listen up all you politicians who only want our votes this fall. If you allow amnesty to 12 million ILLEGALS and do nothing to secure the borders you’re outta here come November. Bush can’t be put out, but he can spend the last two years facing impeachment charges and a lost presidency, like Clinton did, though for another reason.
Oh yeah, and after my five part series on the economy being destined for a fall, while Wall Street had the champagne being chilled for a Thursday breaking of the 11,722 Dow high, guess what? Back to back double-digit declines took the Dow down more than 250 points for the two days.
Wow, both Bush and Wall Street waking up at the same time, or at least that’s my take. The only question is why? The weather?
SOME MOMENTS ARE JUST AWESOME
May 11, 2006
The sun has just given up for the day, and the FULL moon is taking it’s station to watch over us on this Thursday night as I sit here enjoying what might be the last God-ordained night for Houston weather.
I had to go in and get a sweater. I’m not spending this night in-doors. The weather man says we’ll dip into the upper 50′s; and I just checked the humidity: 24%! It all goes so well with an ’02 Santa Ema Reserva.
My two golden retrievers sit in the green grass at my feet, underneath one of my two apple trees. Someone have a bandana? I go back and forth between listening to the Rippinton’s (Wild Card CD), Ronny Jordan (At Last CD), and then total silence. So many choices and for this one evening, I’m not going to write about the markets, a world out of control, or any of that stuff. It’ll be there Friday.
Sometimes it’s just best to rest, let the soul soar with whatever the spirit directs, and soak! I usually leave “soaking” to those early morning, final moments before duty calls into the abysss we call work, life.
Sometimes, it’s just about being. This is one of those sometimes. May you find many along life’s journey. Hasta luego.
ONLY IN AMERICA!
May 11, 2006
I did not make my normal post this morning due to the fact that I fly to San Antonio Tuesday to hook up with a friend, fly in a private jet to Miami, and fly back a little past midnight the same day. Then I fly back home (commercial) today. In that brief twenty-four get-away from things I might call ‘normal’, I was able to meet the following.
A man who gave his life to the Lord the very first time he went to a church (Eagle’s Nest), and he became a born-again Protestant even though his dad was not saved and his mother was Jewish. And now he’s in the full time ministry and loving serving God.
I met a young man who used to play professional baseball, but injuries made him give it up and so he’s now in the world of private jet chatering and making even more money.
I met a man who moved from Holland eight years ago to come to American briefly for some additional pilot training. He’s been here eight years now with no desire to return.
And I met a man who used to fly with the power brokers- politicians in Venezuela decades ago. He even flew one of the big-wigs out of the country with tens of millions of dollars in cargo decades ago. He got $300,000 to pilot the plane to America and it’s in America that he’s stayed.
What I met in less than twenty four hours were many people (four above included), who love America: a nation that still provides the best hope for anyone being able to be (materially) whatever they want to be. And yet all you hear from the left is how bad it is here in America. I think we all know that if they really believed that, they’d leave.
HOW ABOUT A PART # 5?
May 10, 2006
My discerning weather vane, if that’s what this is, seems to be driven by a strong North wind. So, as a follow up to May 5-8, which you can read in the archives if you just stumbled on to this website, let me add some things that I sense after the Fed increased the Fed funds rate for the 16th time in a row: 16 quarter-point raises.
Does that make any sense?
I know who says it has to make sense? Was there anyone surprised by the rate increase? It’s beginning to kill the housing market and it has already put a dagger into car sales. But, Ben B. doesn’t have any other choices in light of the inflationary stampede that’s being heard in the background.
Just consider the following facts. We’ve lost 2,000+ soldiers and handed out more than 18,000 purple hearts. The war in Iraq and Afghanistan is costing us $10 BILLION a month and we were already spending more on defense-military than ALL the other nations of the PLANET COMBINED!In the last year bank credit has surged into double digit territory, closing in on a record $8 TRILLION! Central banks around the globe are expanding their currencies to try and keep up with the paper-printing madness of our Fed.
The US$ is tanking and all the BIG BOYS are getting rich shorting it. Insiders say the Fed is bent on a 25% reduction in the value of the US$ in order to finance all this insanity! Can you say Soros, Buffet, and Friends? How long will the rest of the world finance our $2 BILLION a day habit, balance of trade difference? How long? I doubt much longer.
So, is there any wonder that gold has been up 15 out of the last 18 days, up 19% in the last 30 days ($111), and up 66% ($281) in the last 365 days? There will be a correction at some point; however, the trend is UP, UP, and AWAY, because that’s where all of this inflationary madness is leading. You may not see it yet, but you will!
LET ME SAY IT ONCE MORE
May 9, 2006
There are many ironic things about life, and one of them is how the mightest or armies could be possible be brought down by one lone individual: and probably a teenager at that!
I wrote some time ago about how our enemies know they can beat our military. America spends more on defense than ALL the other nations combined. We may not give every soldier the protecive gear he’d like, our humvees sure don’t have all the steel plating that they need; however, when push comes to shove, America can take out anyone we want at any time. The only question is what the cost to innocent life would be.
So, rogue nations are working on ways of taking out our electrical grid, not with bombs but with eletromagnetic devices. But better still (or worse as it could be) is the scary thought of how much our military is dependent upon computers. And how vulnerable we are to hackers.
There was a major breach last year, and we’re just now getting the details. I’m all for not telling the public such things as this because it only emboldens our enemies. And I am all for us doing all we can to put some armor on that Achilles heel. This my friend is no myth!
WE WELCOME ALL TERRORISTS!
May 9, 2006
When I first read the story by Sarah Carter, I thought it was a joke,a tongue-n-cheek article. But to my amazement, the story is true.
Somewhere, and I have to start with George W. Bush, we have lost our ever loven minds. Bush must share the blame with his father and Bill Clinton- and the Congress (Democratic and Republican led). For two decades now (1986), no one has done anything about our border with Mexico: can you say immigration nightmare?
Ever since we let several million in free (via amnesty), we’ve turned our heads while another twelve million (minimally) have crossed the border. Bush wants a very liberal policy that has conservatives telling him to shove it. We’d do better with a Democraitc president- on this issue.
But this is incredible.
Our government is telling the Mexican government where the Minutemen are located along the border. In other words, we are saying don’t try to cross at location “A’. cross at location “B” where there are no troops or Minutemen. I wonder if the Feds will be “outing” the Arizona locals as well?
Hey, all you terrorists, here is where OUR government wants you to cross the border and bring in your WMD’s. If there’s a reason for impeachment, this goes to the front of my list. If government has ANY reason to exist, it it to provide for the common defense: and this is NOT DOING THAT!
I can’t believe our government is following such policies.
TELL ME IT AIN’T SO MARTHA!
May 8, 2006
A friend of mine told me that he was only going to sell tapes: not write books. Since he had a national ministry I had to ask the question. Why not? I liked his answer. He said our world was chnaging so fast, he didn’t want to put in writing what he might not agree with later.
In other words, while he wasn’t necessarily right on everything, he was never in doubt. You know people like that?
I am amazed at all the money that has been falsely made (hundreds of millions in book sales) by primarily men who thought they knew-it-all. And of all topics to be a know-it-all on, they choose the end of the world, basing their claims on the most symbolic book of the New Testament- Revelations!
How could anyone prove someone wrong? You’d have to wallow in the same stuff they did. Or, you could wait until the date that they said the world would come to an end. Remember when the world was to come to an end in 1984? How about that wild claim of 1988? There have been too many claims to mention. And some of those men have been able to retire on their false pronouncements.
Well, guess what! Maybe, just maybe 666 (The mark of the beast in Revelations) isn’t 666. Maybe it’s 616! If indeed it turns out to be 616, I prophecy two things. Are you ready?
I predict that those who have made a big deal out of 666, will lose book sales. And I believe there will be a whole new crop of writers coming out with what 616 means. Oh, and one other probable prediction. People will keep buying those stupid books regardless of what the number is. We just love to have our ears tickled.
AN ECONOMIC VIEW – PART # 4
May 8, 2006
This will be my final comment in this area- for a few days. The Feds meet Tuesday and Wednesday. Will they raise rates again, for the 16th time- fearing what I see: inflation? Or, will they back off, fearing too much will cook the Dow goose? We’ll know Weds.
In the meantime, as the US$ sinks to the 85.00 level, all nations are devaluing their currencies in an attempt to not let the U.S. get a bigger advantage. All the nations of the world are printing money as fast as they can to keep their currencies low.
So, with ALL currencies being worth less every day, people are moving into gold, silver, and other commodities. As an example, last week a Picasso was sold at Sotheby’s auction for $95 million: two others went for $52 mil combined. Bill Gross of PIMCO bought some 1918 stamps for a world record $1.97 million.
Are we into excess or what?
What is happening is the world financial market is near a train wreck and people are getting out of cash and currencies and into things of real value. Soon, that will include housing, and yes, the overbought, expensive stock market.
In 1996-1998, I gave a series of warnings of a stock market that had to tank. It began in late ’99 and over a period of two years the Nasdaq dropped 80%, the DOW and S&P 500 down big time, but not as bad. As the Dow approaches it’s all time high, the Nasdaq is still 50% below it’s all time high. Who knows when all hell will break loose? I don’t know WHEN, I just know it MUST and it WILL, not too far down the road.
Bottom line, there are way too many risks at play in the world today which are not factored in, but they will come into play. I only hope not all at once.
AN ECONOMIC VIEW – PART 3
May 7, 2006
Here’s what I fear that I think is far more possible than we want to believe. Richard Maybury said it this way.
“US officials have squandered the advantages they had at the beginning of the war. It must either withdraw, or resort to the ancient Roman technique of making an example of someone: freightening the entire Muslim world into submission may not be possible.”
Not possible at all from where I sit. The U.N. Security Council isn’t going to do anything. Russia and China will veto any proposal that has any teeth. Both are favored nations and get their oil from Iran. Iran has nothing to worry about in the way of sanctions from the U.S. or the rest of the world.
Iran knows it and that’s why they are telling us to shove off.
The forecast? Higher oil, and more money for America’s enemies (a list too long to mention) until the system finally breaks. If we pull out of Iraq, Iran takes it over.
And here’s where mixing politics and religion makes governing impossible. Maybury adds this comment, “The key to Bush’s thinking, I believe, is that in a war with Satan, failure is not an option, nor is compromise. One thing I am sure about: Bush will do whatever he thinks God wants, no limits.”
While I admire and respect Bush as a Christian, and a kind person, I’m uneasy with Maybury’s statement because it rings so true, and yet sounds so difficult. As I said when I began this series, I see no peace anywhere down the road. Call it WWIII as Bush did yesterday, call it a war on terrorism, but it’s really a Holy War, and those have proven to be the worst kind.
And America’s economic structure cannot stay prosperous in such an environment.
