DON’T MISS BENNIE & THE FEDS!

June 28, 2006

Are we fighting inflation or deflation? Will the Feds raise rates Thursday for the 17th time- and if so by how much? And how will whatever they decide to do, affect the stock market?

Thursday we will find out around 1:15pm CST when Bennie & The Feds release their decisions regarding interest rates. Bennie of course in Alan Greenspan’s replacement- Ben Bernanke.

Up until now the direction of the Fed was all but predictable; however, for this 17th meeting, there are many opinions. So, let me place some odds, to which no one is betting money.

>1 in 5 leave rates same.
>3 in 5 raise rates 1/4%.
>1 in 5 raise rates 1/2%.

I can’t see the markets liking either of the last two scenarios. But then again, it’s not just what they do with the rates, but, what they say “going forward”. Sometimes it is their prognostication and statement about the future that does the most damage.

I’m just happy to be on the sidelines. And beyond what Bennie & The Feds do Thursday, I think there is something smelling bad underneath the whole of the market. Besides over-evaluations, increased selling pressure, lowered buying sentiment, lower volume on rallies, and higher volume on declines, could there be hedge-fund problems lurking behind the veil?

Gold firms handed reserves warning

June 27, 2006

Like black gold, oil, there is a limited supply of all our natural resources. Banks, especially the BOE sold much of their reserves in the late 90’s, and now wish they had not. Selling their reserves at $252 an ounce five years ago make them look like fools with gold now just below $600 an ounce.

Finding Your Purpose- Before Finding A Job

June 27, 2006

Sociologists tell us that 65% of America’s work force are unsatisfied with their jobs and want to be doing “something else”.  When you try to fit a square block into a round cylinder, something is not going to feel or look good. Finding that purpose, your DNA code, the resonating or tuning fork within your being, or the “raison d’etre” is one of the most important tasks and accomplishments in life.

Where Is The Third Party?

June 27, 2006

I believe the usefulness of a two-party system in America has now run it’s course and we’re dealing with a relic that does not serve our nation well. There are more than 100 minor parties in America from American Centrist Party, to the Working Families Party. But, can a third party really compete in 2008?

Next to terrorism or the threat of war, INFLATION is a factor to drive gold higher. So, as oil prices increase, so too does inflation. There are now two facts driving gold on this Tuesday.

JUST TEN YEARS AGO!!!

June 27, 2006

I was trying to think where America and China would be ten years from now (see an earlier post), when the thought came to me in another area and an era ten years before. Looking back to the changes that have occured in just one decade, in but one area of life, is staggering. I am talking about the internet.

Remember when you used to use a telephone to talk to one person at a time: unless you had tele-conferencing. Now, at the click of a button, I can communicate with literally thousands to millions of people.

Remember when you used to write a check, put it in an envelope with the bill, affix a 29 cent stamp, and mail it to pay a bill. I know, some still do, but that’s now an option. Remember when you used to get a pay check, go to bank and deposit it? You still do that?

Being a Dodger fan, it used to bug me that neither Post (remember that newspaper) nor the Chronicle would have the box scores for the West Coast teams due to the lateness of the games versus their need to go to press. Irritating. And while I’m thinking about it, remember when you used to take a newspaper to get your news?

I now have thousands of news services from around the world at my finger tips, and I no longer take a newspaper- even if they did have the West Coast sports box scores!
And, the news I get is up to the minute, not a twenty-four hour stale account that has probably changed since they went to press.

Ten years ago, 18% of Americans were on-line compared to 73% today. And for some very good reasons. If it looks stormy outside, I just log-on (as though I weren’t already, eh?) and see a color rendition of the clouds and approaching storms by Doppler radar.

I can even remember when I used to go to the store to buy a book. Imagine that: how ancient! Why would I want to spend the time and the money to go to a crowded store, not find a parking place, and find out they don’t have the book I want? Now, I can order the book from Amazon with guaranteed two day delivery for one time fee of $79 a year. Did I mention buying movies on line as well? And, making my movies reservations on-line and picking the tickets up at the theatre, without a line?

But while the above and many other points or interest are a benefit to me, that Google stock that has tripled since the IPO was floated a couple of months ago, is the best thing since sliced bread. Whatever I want to know is at my finger tips, and it usually only takes seconds to find any answer to any question.

Oh yes, then there’s the speed. Remember the 28.8k dial up modem that we thought was terrific? Now we surf at 70-100x that speed. Thanks to the over expansion of broadband, there are now ten times the number of users as their was a decade ago.

And if you want to see the new roof on my house, there’s a satellite picture that can take you there, which will eventually put Key Maps out of business as we can get almost any directions to and from any location. All this and more in just ten years. Where will we be in another ten years? Who can imagine?

A 19 YEAR OLD CHANGES THINGS

June 27, 2006

Once again we are reminded of the addage that a single death is a tragedy; however, 3,000 deaths is a statistic.

As I start this commentary at 4pm on Tuesday, word is coming across the news wires that Israel is moving in to Gaza with tanks and aircraft.

Who Wants Cheaper Auto Insurance?

Why?

The reason is because of a 19 year old Cpl. by the name of Gilad Shalit. I have been seeing his picture on TV every time I glance at it. Shalit looks more like a timid high school student than a military warrior.

Two weeks ago, Americans were spared the horrific pictures of seeing two of our kidnapped soldiers being tortured, begging for their lives, etc. The American psyche is so fragile, an extanded drawn out incident would cause Americans to demand we vacate the war.

But, back to the point, Israel has seen dozens of people blown up: women, children, and by-standers. There was no threat of war; however, when ONE lone soldier becomes the poster child for the resolve of a nation, ego reigns supreme.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert gave Hamas a matter of hours to surrender Shalit, or else. It appears “or else” is now underway.

Lieberman Leaves The Left

June 26, 2006

Joe Liberman has found forgiveness is misplaced in Conn. His support of the war isn’t something that people in the Northeast cater to these days. Democrats are bent on kicking him out the back door. Who cares if he was the VP candidate?
