Can The New Congress Do It?

November 22, 2006

Republicans, particularly in the Senate, could not agree on an immigration bill and therefore the “do nothing” Republican Congress was outed November 6th. So what can we expect out of the next Congress that will be convened in January? Will Bush push or will the Congress regress? Continue Reading »

Lead By Example

November 22, 2006

“Example is the greatest of all seducers.” French proverb

People will eventually DO as you DO and not as you SAY! This does not mean that we can say anything because no one is paying attention. What the expression tries to convey is more to watching out what we model or do because people will eventually use us as an excuse to do what’s in their flesh anyway! So much of our success is due to WHAT WE DO both in private and in public. Continue Reading »

Executive Order 12333

November 21, 2006

I’ve always been interested in these things called “executive orders“. Roman emperors called them decrees, dictators call them edicts, and others just do whatever they want without giving them a label. These “executive orders have been around since 1789! It wasn’t until around 1900 that we began “numbering” them, and not until around 1950 that the USSC set some guidelines. Wars have been fought (1999 Kosovo war) based on “executive orders” even though it is the Congress that the Constitution says must wage war. Continue Reading »

Crude Leads The Way

November 21, 2006

Commodities have seemingly stablized. People are stealing cooper out of everything that can. And after dropping to near $57, oil is on the rise again. Tuesday, oil closed back above $60 a barrel and as a result gold had a nice gain as well. Continue Reading »

More Than An Eye For An Eye?

November 20, 2006

September 11th will be remembered by Americans for decades upon decades. The walls of our nation (not counting Pearl Harbor) were finally breached. An attack has happened within our 48 contiguous states. So, what should be our response? What would be a fair response, a logical response. How could we defend ourselves so as to not have that happen again? I could give you at least a half dozen options, but not the one we chose. Continue Reading »

Some Guns & Some Butter

November 19, 2006

There’s an old addage that says you have to make a decision between guns and butter. In other words you have to make a decision between spending money on war items or on domestic social programs. There is only so much monetary pie, ewven if you are the government and have an unlimited checkbook. Deficit spending will eventually catch up with you and cause more problems than you’d want. Continue Reading »

The Mess Called Iraq

November 17, 2006

Tony Blair admitted that British intervention in Iraq has been a disaster last night - sending shockwaves through Westminster. In his frankest admission about the war to date, Blair admitted that Western forces have been powerless to stop the descent into violence. Now what can Bush say? Democrats are threatening to cut off funding the war on this side of the pond and his only major ally, Tony Blair, is saying Iraq is a mess from the other side of the pond. Continue Reading »

It’s Not Just About The War Nancy!

November 16, 2006

We now have our first female Speaker of the House. But, it was a bitter-sweet day for one Nancy Pelosi. I’m reminded of one of the final scenes in the movie Patton. As he walks away from a brush with death (a cart breaks loose and heads right for him), he strolls underneath a large windmill narrating a custom from ancient Roman days. Anyone remember it?

The story goes that the emperor would triumphantly be brought into town with pomp and ceremony with many of the captives trailing along behind him in great humiliation. But there would also be someone whispering in his ear that fame is fleeting, so enjoy the moment. Nancy had less than an two hours of such fame. Continue Reading »

The Presidency vs. Legislative Branch

November 15, 2006

Okay, Thursday we find out if Nancy Pelosi has the power she thinks she has or could it be we’ll find out if Murtha has as much clout as he thinks he has? Once that is done we get down to the nitty-gritty of politics and high drama. Democrats feel emboldened by the election and want troop withdrawal in 4-6 months. Bush is still, the President. Congress still controls the purse strings. How is this all going to work out? Continue Reading »

Washington, D.C. Clones?

November 14, 2006

From my perspective they are all the same. Give a person some power in Congress and you’re going to get some “look-alikes“. Bank on it. My latest evidence would be the Nancy Pelosi for the number two man (literally) behind her. Rep. John Murtha, the anti-war congressman who is the likely new House speaker’s pick for majority leader, fended off what he called “swift boat-style attacks” on his ethics record Tuesday. Of all the people that Nancy Pelosi could have selected, Murtha would have been the last person to select unless you’re into the cloning business. Continue Reading »

Being Alone Isn’t Fun!

November 13, 2006

I believe the best expression that fits here is “kick em when they’re down“. Bush must be wondering what hit him? Could it be that he got into a war he couldn ‘t find anything else to say about other than “Stay the course?” Of could it be an administration that had more of their troops indicted for corruption than one can remember? Maybe it was that in addition to the corruption that there were no accomplishments? No immigration bill, no progress in talks with North Korea, Iran, etc. At some point accountability for your deeds come into play. Continue Reading »

Someone Will Blink Soon

November 13, 2006

Iran and Israel are ratching up the rhetoric big time. Iran has been the big mouth piece for some time; however, what is becoming more and more obvious is that Israel is starting to take Ahmadinejad a little mroe seriously. Thus Olmert, prime minsiter of Israel is speaking out more. Each month the pronouncements on each side become more and more aggressive. One day the rubber band will snap. One day one of the two nations will blink and it will be on. And God help us when it is. Continue Reading »
