Who Is Hsu?
August 31, 2007
Who’s on first? Oops, that’s the wrong lead line.
San Mateo County Superior Court Judge H. James Ellis ordered Norman Hsu handcuffed and held on $2 million bond. A bail hearing was scheduled for Sept. 5, at which the judge will consider reducing his bail to $1 million. Hey, that shouldn’t be a problem for Hillary or Bill to raise for who? Hsu appeared in court accompanied by a lawyer and publicist, both of whom declined to say whether the New York apparel executive would immediately post bail. A warrant was issued for his arrest after he skipped the sentencing for a 1991 grand theft charge. You’ve heard how justice grinds slowly right? Sixteen years later he’s now in jail. Immigration Crack Down Next Seek!
August 31, 2007
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, ACLU and others are warning of major disruptions when the federal government launches an illegal immigration crackdown next week with a flurry of letters notifying employers that some of their workers have suspect Social Security numbers. Employers told of suspect Social Security numbers must fix problem or face sanctions! The proverbial rock and a ahrd place. Continue Reading »
The Anniversary Of Two Cities
August 29, 2007
Since we’re at the two year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, remeber that one, let’s do some comparisons of two cities. Two years after Hurricane Katrina, thousands of people in south Louisiana and along the Mississippi Gulf Coast are still struggling to rebuild their lives. Recovery from such a catastrophic event is slow and complex. Though the population and economy in the region’s two largest cities of Biloxi and New Orleans continue to grow, serious issues persist. Let’s compare the two and in doing so we’re saying much about the leadership and culture of the two communities. Continue Reading »
Illiquidity vs. Insolvency
August 28, 2007
Back to the financials markets after another triple digit hammer job: the Dow wasdown 280 points at the close of Tuesday’s trading. There have to be a lot of people driven out of the market- primarily the little guy, the small investor. When word got out Tuesday that the Fed wasn’t all that worried about the markets which was added to the dismal real estate data, down the tubes went the markets. And as I’ve said for weeks now, the “Fat Lady” still hasn’t gotten up on the financial stage to sing. Continue Reading »
South American Sweetner
August 28, 2007
I’m not talking about sugar cane. I’m talking about the race to get the attention and loyalties of all those poor countries in South America. Hey, if Europe can get their act together for a United Europe. why not South America? And if you are China, making friends South os the United States makes strategic sense. Throw in a Hugo Chavez for good measure and America, you have a problem in South America! Continue Reading »
None Of Your Business!
August 25, 2007
If Bloomberg does decide to run for president in 2008, as a third aprty candidate, he’s going to have to make some changes in his financial disclosures; and maybe that’s what he’s in the process of doing right now. Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire mayor and potential presidential candidate, is refusing to release his income tax returns, unlike many politicians including the president and past New York City mayors. What’s up with that? While he doesn’t have to- it’s not a law, tradition says do it. By the way, Ross Perot didn’t! Maybe it’s a third party candidate tradition. Continue Reading »
The Tide Is Turning!
August 25, 2007
Bush lost his “macho, see you at the signing” statement he made about the immigration bill two months ago. Immigration is now a losing proposition- for those that are not legal. The government is coming after the illegals. Most politicians who are running for office next year, see the hand writing on the wall (the public wants enforcement), and are backing off of supporting anything that looks like amnesty. John McCain probably is the classic example. But, here’s what’s happened in wake of the immigration bill defeat. Continue Reading »
The Fed’s Paradox!
August 25, 2007
Should Big Ben (as in Barnacke) reduce interest rates or should he not? Ben wanted to stay out of the recent liquidity crisis but they couldn’t. So, the Fed has pumped BILLIONS into the financial markets and they’ve alowed banks to borrow money from them at lower rates. And it now appears that all if fine. Appearances can be deceiving. Imperialism Revisited
August 22, 2007
It’s one thing to go into a country and take out a dictator, despot, and tyrant who has recently started a war with on of their neighbors. Can you say Saddam? It’s another thing to try and help that nation to become a democracy as we are in Iraq. However, when poiliticians here in America start voicing who they feel should run the country, I’d say that’s more than meddling, it’s imperialism at the core. Continue Reading »
Romney Takes A Stand
August 22, 2007
Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney criticizes “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants — and by implication Republican rival Rudy Giuliani — in a new radio ad. “Immigration laws don’t work if they’re ignored. That’s the problem with cities like Newark, San Francisco and New York City that adopt sanctuary policies,” an announcer says in the ad, which runs in New Hampshire and Iowa. “Sanctuary cities become magnets that encourage illegal immigration and undermine secure borders.” Continue Reading »
She Flip-Flops Once Again
August 20, 2007
Remember a couple of months ago when Hillary demanded that Bush pull all the troops out before she wis the presidency? Then she backed it up a bit and said that the troops should be out immediately. That was then, this is now. Senator Hillary Clinton, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination, went out of her way Sunday to underscore the risks of a too-rapid U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. She indicated that a pullout might take up to 20 months, adding, “This is not going to be easy or safe.” Say what? When did this change come about? Continue Reading »
More Gore Lore!
August 16, 2007
AL Gore has found his liberal, left wing, climate fanatical ‘Warming Earth” drum to beat. The only problem is that the drum is broken and the “sticks” are about worn out. Know what I mean? I am very much into preserving and enhancing our environment; however, I’m not paranoid about that which we cannot prove. In fact, the majority of the scientists are against the “global warming” lore that Gore is peddling. And some recent news is more than “egg on your face” kind of stuff. Continue Reading »
Make That 11 Out Of 18!
August 15, 2007
If you’re in the stock market, it’s not very much fun. Can you say “margin calls” for the speculative and losses for the rest. Wall Street pulled back sharply Tuesday as investors worried about fundamental economic problems as well as the ongoing fallout from credit market problems and stocks’ own volatility. The Dow Jones industrials skidded more than 200 points. Tuesday ended down for the 11th time in 18 trading days. In those 11 days that were in the red, 9 of the 11 were triple digit losses; down 146, 149, 152, 208, 209, 226, 281, 312, and 387! That’s big time hurt amounting to more than 1,500 points down. Ands even when you throw in the 7 up days, it’s a 1,000+ loss on the whole. Continue Reading »
Reviving Prohibitionist Days?
August 14, 2007
It’s amazing to me that in light of ALL the many serious issues that we face as a nation the press is fixated on Britney Spears or Paris Hilton. And that the church is wanting to go back to the Prohibition Days- or at least some do. Can you say Athens? A measure to end the sale of alcohol in Athens is up for a citywide vote, a rare instance where voters could overturn a previous vote to allow sales. Business interests are against repeal, but church leaders who helped organize the petition drive that got the measure on the ballot are asking members to pray and fast in support of a ban.
