DEMOCRACY OR THEOCRACY?
April 25, 2004
Many on the conservative right would love to see more religion in government and if they had their way, they’d trash democracy and install a theocratic government.
The battle shaping up now in Iraq is over the same issue. Will their be a Shiite-led government, run by Mullahs, Immans, and other religious leaders? Will Iraq be another Iran? It would be an improvement but while we’re remodeling the house, why not make some major improvements to the nation.
History is full of examples that say state and church should not be one. America is very experienced with the church-state seperation issue. There’s a reason that God set up two governing bodies. There’s a reason God gave the Spriit to the church and the sword to the state. Educating the Arab world in that direction will not be easy.
After all, they still march to a different drummer. Democracy is as foreign to them as is the concept of grace and mercy. Then again, we have many in America who seem to know little about grace and mercy, but that’s another story, for another day.
