Don’t Settle For The Status Quo

September 27, 2006

“Even when I was young I suspected that much might be done in a better way.” Henry Ford Sr.

We are living in a time of incredible acceleration of technology and information. Corporations that do not innovate and pour much into R&D will find themselves soon out of business. In like fashion, every worker in America particularly, must learn to adjust both emotionally and mentally. You don’t have to necessarily be the first in the market place with an idea, though that helps!

“IBM didn’t invent the personal computer but they had the resources to succeed against those who were early entrants into the market.” John Handy

As important as anything is the need to know that the world is not sitting still and that the STATUS QUO is just another name for FAILURE in today’s market place. You don’t have to have all of the answers for no one can but you need to constantly be IN SEARCH of the new! As Wernher von Braun said, “Basic research is what I am doing when I don’t know what I am doing.” Golden parachutes will not save us any more than will streets of gold will in today’s climate. Cutting edge excellence is a must! The meaning of status quo is no promotion.

Change, innovation, excellence, paradigm shifts, and creativity are just the beginning place for promotion in our society that is basically recreating itself every half dozen years. Our comfort zones are being hit from every angle and we’re not liking it; but it’s just the start! If you want to stay employed (not to mention be promoted) you’re going to need to attack the unknown with a passion. It’s always hard to “cash in the known to bet the unknown.”. Most cannot do it!

“The world hates change, but it is the only thing that has brought progress.” Charles Kettering

The Latin proverb warns us that “Times change and we change with them” or else we regress! The times that we’re in now cause us even greater regression due to the speed at which our society is under- going transformation. We dare not say, “I am too old”, or “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks”, or worse yet, “I’m not sure I’m up to it any more”. If you are ready to settle for the status quo then you are in essence saying you’re ready to give up on life and cash in your chips. It will be a heavy price to down the road and the witness to others will be terrible.

“Most people would die sooner than think; in fact, they do.” Bertrand Russell

We are “over-comers” and we’ve been given “special grace” over and above the lost world so let’s tap into that grace and find our destiny and passion. After all, it is not death , but “dying” which is terrible. Let us step up to the plate of life and take some swings at “creativity”. What’s to lose except maybe our fear of striking out? I fear more; not being able to play!

When you innovate, take on the new, try some- thing that no one else has, you’re bound to fail! But, on the other hand, you’re assured of some victories along the way and therein we advance society and this world we live in. Life goes NO WHERE on a diet of SYNTHESIS but progresses only where controlled AINTITHESIS flourishes. Let us accept the challenge of the new millennium with a zeal and an expectancy of victory by throwing off the shackles of the status quo and taking on the new garments of change and innovation. The cloud is about to move……all aboard!

“The secret to life is not to DO what you LIKE, but to LIKE what it is you DO.” Greek Proverb
