God Damn America?

March 15, 2008

When the sermon came to light by Obama’s longtime pastor the Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. wherein he said on three occasions, god damn America, you knew two things. First Obama had to reject such lanuagae and secondly the impact on Obama’s campaign was not going to be good no matter how one cut it. Talk about a wind-fall for Hillary. I’m sure they were sipping the champagne last night ove this story.

This story and the other wild statements by Pastor Wright have the the potential to undo Obama’s campaign. It’s not that he disagrees with one or two sermons by Wright, but that he sat under his ministry for nearly twenty years and surely Obama couldn’t miss that many sermons. He was married in Wright’s church and called him his spiritual mentor. And he wasn’t aware of Wright’s hate speech?

This is one tough story to get around- if he can.

Obama even broke down and agreed to go on Fox News! You know he’s taking this seriously.

In an interview Friday with FOX News, Obama said he personally never had heard the pastor’s controversial comments, though he joined his Trinity United Church of Christ nearly 20 years ago. He said the sermons now sparking controversy didn’t resemble the ones he remembers from Wright, which, Obama said, stuck to messages of faith, values and helping people in the community.

But Obama’s pastor long has been a lightning rod for controversy. For starters, Wright’s relationship with Louis Farrakhan, once described by Obama as a “close” relationship, has been of concern to many in the Jewish community.

As video of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright has widely aired on television and the Internet, Obama responded by posting a blog about his relationship with Wright and his church, Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, on the Huffington Post. Obama wrote that he’s looked to Wright for spiritual advice, not political guidance, and he’s been pained and angered to learn of some of his pastor’s comments for which he had not been present.

The name Rev. Wright story moved the Eliot Spitzer story off the front pages.

Obama’s camp released a somewhat stronger statement Thursday after FOX News had reported more on Wright’s sermons — in one, he repeatedly said “God damn America,” while in others he blamed the United States for the spread of HIV and the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and highlighted what he saw as a racial divide between Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Obama better increase his prayers to Jesus!

“Senator Obama has said before that he profoundly disagrees with some of the statements and positions of Rev. Wright, who has preached his last sermon as pastor at the church,” Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton said. “Senator Obama deplores divisive statements whether they come from his supporters, the supporters of his opponent, talk radio, or anywhere else.”

The jury is out, but the discussions will be heated and on-going.
