Greenland Ice Sheet

February 28, 2008

Most people are oblivious as to world geography or history so few would know that the Greenland Ice Sheet is a vast body of ice covering roughly 80% of the surface of Greenland. It is the second largest ice body in the world, after the Antarctic Ice Sheet. How about those facts! Good trivia questions to ask your friends. But, the point is?

If the ice were to disappear, Greenland would most probably appear as an archipelago because the central land mass is at or below sea level with surrounding mountains. What we now know is that the ice sheet is melting 3x faster than we previously thought. And there’s indication that large, very large chunks could simply break off causing other problems sooner.

Scientists are sounding a global warning- it is happening albeit slowly now.

There’s a “tipping point” where there canz be no reversals. Who knows when that is? What we do know though is that is the entire sheet melted, it would raise the average sea level by 24 feet. Houston would still be dry, but you wouldn’t have very far to drive to get to the Gulf. Galveston? What Galveston?

We need our oxygen producing oceans! But not that much ocean. :-)

Oh yes, and the second largest ice sheet is the Antartica. We sure don’t want it to melt as well because the two together would mean that we living hee in Houston would have to make Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio our home as Houston would be under 23 feet of water. Some of our skyscrapers would make a good companion moive to either the Day After Tomorrow or Spielberg’s film, Artificial Intelligence seem too sureal.

Global warming is a reality- but from the sun more so currently than from human generated CO2. The Inconvenient Truth is from “out there”, but we’re not helping cool things down either. While many debunk global warming, no one can deny the solar warmind that’s going on. And there’s little we can do about that!

How’s your prayer life? :-)
