Hormonal Gods?
August 13, 2008
Why is it that we’re almost too afraid to believe what should be, what’s really is behind the veil, or what’s often times called the GOOD NEWS? We’ve been taught that IF something sounds too good to be true, then it probably IS (too good to be true). And yet we profess to believe in a God of mercy and grace. Tell me how you reconcile those two mindsets- how does one rationalize that?
I love grace, I cherish mercy, and I follow a God who offers far more of it than I could ever use. Isn’t it just the BEST NEWS that God loves sinners? Isn’t it amazing how our Creator uses our mistakes, screw-ups, and misdeeds for His advantage (though He’s not male)?
There’s many things that we can learn from the Old Testament or better yet, the Hebrew Scriptures.
One of those things that I’ve learned is that is how the Hebrews saw God 2-3,000 years ago. The “God of their consciousness” was something else! Why do I need Jesus? Because if He didn’t come along, I’m not sure what kind of an image of God, Consciousness, Creator, Abba Father I would have. The earliest religions credited God with all manner of crazy stuff that pictured Him as being hormonal at best and skitzo at worst.
The Hebrew God was demanding, punishing, retributive, toxic, wishy-washy, picky, and overall not someone you’d want to go on a vacation with or stand to close to. I mean, who could live up to His demands? And this world that God had created was subject to so much calamity, wars, and barbaric doings that one has to wonder why He would create such a mess. Did I mention he sent us into the word faulty to begin with as well (original sin)?
And why did we need to kill all those tens of millions of animals?
Killing animals made Him happy? I don’t get it, but then I no longer have to since Jesus appeared on the scene. He set things straight. But, much of the church is still demanding rituals and sacrifices that don’t make sense, but to not due them will send one to an eternal hell. Eternal? Why so severe?
Ah, who knows why we’ve believed and still believe in such hormonal and angry gods. Give it up and just follow Jesus who said He KNEW God and if we’d but adopt His WAYS (of living life), follow His pattern of forgiveness, and simply LOVE ALL, we’d no longer need to live in fear of God.
Are you living in fear of God or in amazment of the grace of God in your life?
