Immigration Crack Down Next Seek!
August 31, 2007
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, ACLU and others are warning of major disruptions when the federal government launches an illegal immigration crackdown next week with a flurry of letters notifying employers that some of their workers have suspect Social Security numbers. Employers told of suspect Social Security numbers must fix problem or face sanctions! The proverbial rock and a ahrd place.
“Many lawful U.S. citizens and those legally allowed to work in our country will be caught up in Social Security no-match letters,” the business-backed Essential Worker Immigration Coalition said this week, urging a six-month delay. “Employers will be overwhelmed with paperwork as the government seeks to make employers responsible for the decades-old administrative problems.”
Now that’s a good reason not to do a thing! “I’m overwhelmed!”. ![]()
The government plans to send the letters to an estimated 140,000 employers over a two-month period, covering about 8.9 million Social Security numbers and names that do not match government records. Though the government has long issued no-match letters, this marks the first time that employers are being warned that they could face significant criminal penalties or fines of as much as $10,000 per illegal worker if they don’t quickly resolve the discrepancies.
That’ll leave a mark!
Though the government has offered no estimates, a sizable portion of the no-matches are the result of illegal immigrants using fake identification and wrong Social Security numbers to get jobs.
