IT TAKES ONE TO KNOW ONE!

September 30, 2005

If it weren’t for the debate skills God gave me, I probably wouldn’t have been able to go directly from high school to college. But with a debate scholarship and a local university (Washburn U.), I was ready and armed. I’d recommend debate as a required course for every high schooler: it will serve them well.

So, let me address the technical points first. Kerry won the toss of the coin and he must have thought it was a football game. He chose to go first! Always go second, and be the last speaker in debate. In football, it’s another matter.

Kerry won the debate flat-out. As a result the polls will tighten. Foreign policy was to be Bush’s strong point but it didn’t show. His handlers even wanted it first to put Kerry in a hole, but it didn’t work. Kerry was more engaged, aggressive, and awake. Bush seemed tired, slow, and well, Bush. He’s no debater. But, let’s leave the “points scored” realm and look at substance: in case that still counts.

I heard two things from JFK. He told us THREE TIMES that his philosophy, strategy, and plan to solve the war in Iraq and terrorism would be to call a SUMMIT. Right! And then he said this, and I am quoting him, “I’ve never wavered in my life”. Right! That does it for me- enough said!

Let’s face it, JFK is a slick politician who knows exactly how to work the crowd. I wonder how smart is the electorate is: can they see reality, do they want truth? If heart, integrity, and principles matter: Bush won. But, knowing America, I have to wonder how many really heard?
