MUSLIM DEMOCRACY?

April 27, 2004

Some 250 leaders from the various Iraqi political factions, and there are many, agreed to attempt to form an interim government thirty days from now. The term that Washington keeps floating around is what they call a “Muslim Democracy”. This of course means it will be different from an “American Democracy”. Duh!

Just how do you bring together all those various tribes, the Shiites, Sunnis, Kurds, and Arabs of every sort? Iran is trying to set up it’s form of “Shiite Democracy”. After seeing pictures of men beating themselves with chains, striking their hads with swords, and otherwise acting completely barbaric and uncivilized (and religious), I am sure that we need a separation of church and state.

My money is on the fact that an interim government will not be set up in thirty days. People really want WORK first. People need money so they can buy food. People need to see their kids educated and in a safe environment. There are a lot of things that come before Democracy. Did I mention that there’s an infrastructure to be rebuilt?

My sons is currently somewhere in the Iraq desert near Basra building a pipeline while keeping an eye out for terrorists, beating off the flies, and wiping sweat from his brow. Like the Iraqi’s, he just wants the basics: water, plumbing, a shower, a hot meal, and a little air conditioning. If all goes well, he’ll return by July 4th. But, knowing the Army and the things that need to be done in Iraq, his return may not happen- much like the proposed interim government.
