Nader & Bloomberg

February 23, 2008

We should have a good clue, if we don’t already, as to who the Democratic candidsate is going to be in the next ten days (March 4th). If Hillary wins both Texas and Ohio, we won’t. But Obama has the momentum and the debate in Austin didn’t do anything to damage his image- or momentum. But what about Nader and Bloomberg?

Ralph Nader could be poised for another third party presidential campaign. The consumer advocate will appear on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday. Nader launched his 2004 presidential run on the show. Does or can lightning strike in the same place twice?

This gets a little more tricky as to whom a Nader presidential run would impact the most at this point.

Kevin Zeese, who was Nader’s spokesman during the 2004 presidential race, but is no longer working for him, said Friday that Nader has been actively talking to “lots of people on all sorts of levels” about the possibility of making another run. Zeese said he could only guess what Nader might do, but added: “Obviously, I don’t think Tim Russert would have him on for no reason.” I mean why would anyone want Ron Paul on?

Last month, Nader began an exploratory presidential campaign and launched a Web site that promises to fight “corporate greed, corporate power, corporate control.” So, what’s new Ralphie?

Nader is still loathed by many Democrats who call him a spoiler and claim his candidacy in 2000 cost Democrats the election by siphoning votes away from Al Gore in a razor-thin contest in Florida. Nader has vociferously disputed the spoiler claim, saying only Democrats are to blame for losing the race to George W. Bush. Though he won 2.7 percent of the national vote as the Green Party candidate in 2000, Nader won just 0.3 percent as an independent in 2004, when he appeared on the ballot in only 34 states.

Then there’s the potentially serious candidate lurking behind the scenes Michael Bloomberg. And I’m sure Obama and Hillary are watching.

While he’s doing all his planning in as much secrecy as possible, he is pontificating on various and sundry issues almost weekly- which have little to do with New York, by the way! So, while we’ll know something on Nader this Sunday (maybe), the BIG SHOE won’t be dropped until later.
