North Carolina Primary

May 7, 2008

Turn Out The Lights…..the party’s over! Hillary had predicted that the Indiana-North Carolina primaries would be a game-changer. So much for wishful thinking. North Carolina sealed the deal as far as I am concerned. And Barack Obama knows it. His victory speech from North Carolina was appealing to the superdelegates to come on over- and they will trickle over, because it’s effectively over. Done deal!

Obama has the most pledged delagates, the most states, and the largest popular vote. The five primaries that are left CAN NOT change any of that! So, expect to see the superdelegates to begin making their intentions known- for Obama! North Carolina, one of the ten most populous states in America gave Obama a major victory!

And then there’s Indiana. CBS called it for Hillary early on; however, FoxNews held out as the lead dropped from 10% to 6%, to 4%, and then finally she won by just 23,000 votes or 2%. The worst case scenario for Hillary was to lose both states. The second worse case scenario was to lose North Carolina by 230,000+ votes and barely win Indiana.

She got the second worse case scenario and that was a deal breaker, not a game changer!

“This has been one of the longest, most closely fought contests in history,” Obama said at a victory rally in Raleigh, N.C. Tuesday night. ” And that’s partly because we have such a formidable opponent in Senator Hillary Clinton.” He is now trying to heal the breach and bring all Democrats together as he looks beyond Hillary.

In an apparent answer to Clinton’s criticism that he is ill-prepared to withstand Republican attacks, Obama said: “The question, then, is not what kind of campaign they’ll run, it’s what kind of campaign we will run… I didn’t get into race thinking that I could avoid this kind of politics, but I am running for President because this is the time to end it.”

Lake County, Indiana, which includes the city of Gary, held off releasing their vote totals which pushed Hillary’s victory speech back past the 10:30 EST. The results from Lake County were critical to the outcome of the Democratic presidential primary in the Hoosier State. The district is heavily urban and has a larger proportion of African-American voters than other parts of the state — two factors that weigh in Sen. Barack Obama’s favor.

When Lake County finally did come in, it wasn’t quite enough; however, the closeness diminished her victory and basically helped the fat lady onto the stage.
