Super Delegate Lunacy

February 11, 2008

I don’t know how else to describe it. I am all for getting the YOUTH of our nation involved in the politial process. I ran for State Representative from the 144th District in Kansas- and barely lost. I was still in college and 21 years of age. I was a political science graduate and highly involved in politics; however, to think that I could (or should) have such power as a super delegate does today (one who might decide who is the next president) is mind boggling! Worse yet, a super delegate can over ride what the PEOPLE (aren’t we still a democratic based nation?).

Jason Rae is far more powerful as a 21 year old than I ever thought I might be!

You see, Jason Rae is a junior in college at Marquette University in Wisconsin where he is majoring in history and political science. Hey, I had a double major: political science and history. I had a total of 63 hours in those two subjects combined! But that’s where Jason and I depart.

I worked closely with Bob Dole when he ran for Senator from Kansas, but Jason Rae started his Monday with a personal breakfast with Chelsea Clinton. Yep, you read that right. Chelsea who is off limits to anything un-kind because mama is a mother before she’s a politician. You can interpret that many ways.

Jason Rae got the one-on-one treatment from the former first daughter because he is a Democratic National Committee member from Wisconsin and thus a “super delegate,” one of the 796 free agents who can back any candidate in the race for the Democratic nomination. Doesn’t seem fair does it? And did you know that he’s never, ever voted before. But, he’s a super delegate!

Someone really needs to look into this process- like the Democrats who thunk it up! :-(

Since the race between New York Sen. Hillary Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is so tight, Jason Rae has become a power broker of sorts, as both campaigns push hard to lock down the support of super delegates. Rae said he and Chelsea Clinton talked about electability and mobilizing young people to get involved in politics. He said she spoke about what states her mother can carry in the general election and what demographics favor her candidacy. The two talked about how the campaign’s operations were going in the states and what she is seeing on the ground.

How quaint!

Rae was elected as a DNC member at the Wisconsin state party convention in June 2004. He was 17 years old at the time but there are no party rules that say a DNC member has to be of voting age. Someone dropped the ball on that one. Rae ran against and defeated the president of the state firefighters’ union and a state legislator. I bet that smarted!

Is it Bloomberg time yet?

Rae has been called on his cell phone by former President Clinton and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright who tried to woo him to the Clinton side and Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry, who was pushing for Rae to endorse Obama.

Wonder if Rae can handle all this at such a young age? Wonder if he should have been put in that predicament to start?
