Superdelegate Update

April 20, 2008

My guess is that you’ll see some changes on the roll and participation of Democratic super delegates at their convention this summer. A superdelegate update is now something that needs to be reviewed every other day or so as more and more superdelegates start to make their “intentions” known. But of course, intentions are just that and they could change tomorrow. But as of today, here’s the best count that I can find.

Keep in mind that there are super delegates that have not even yet be named. What kind of a mess is that? When the difference in superdelegates between Hillary and Obama is but 21 votes (as of this post), not only can the total of superdelegates ofset the pledged and earned delegates through the primary process, but those last named sixty some delegates could turn the tide.

Unnamed Add-on Delegates- 62
Clinton Superdelegates- 254
Obama Superdelegates- 233
Uncommitted Superdelegates- 246
Total 795

What a mess! As I’ve previously said, if how the Democrats run the nation like they run their primaries, we best stick with McCain. Better yet, where’s Michael Bloomberg when you really need a third party candidate? While several >super delegates have made decisions recently, way too little is known this juncture

Obama leads in pledged delegates (Hillary says they’re not pledged) 1648 to 1508 and that’s a lead that has a two-fold story. Hillary cannot beat Obama once all the primaries have been settled, but neither can Obama get to the magical 2,024 to win outright. If you add the 233 superdelegates to Obams pledged delegates count of 1648, he now has 1,881 or 143 short of the goal. So, if just HALF of the still uncommitted 246 (123) go for Obama he’s just 20 votes shy. Ah, the math of it all!

I don’t see the Pennsylvania primary making much difference; however, the Indiana and North Carolina primaries two weeks later could see some major shifts by the 246 uncommitted delegates.

Are we having fun yet?
