The Bloomberg Truck Is Ready!

February 1, 2008

After visiting Texas and California two weeks ago, the Bloomberg machine has been quiet. That is until next week. Ocne we get the Super Tuesday results out of the way, Bloomberg will then know better how to position himself for a run and what his chances are- as though that mattered. Hillary, Obama, McCain, whatever. Who wants to take on close to a BILLION dollar advertising machine? With a half BILL of his own money and another half BILL (as in billion) from his friends, that makes Obama’s $32,000,000 that he raised in January look rather enemic. And you can forget matching funds!

But, third party runs are not that easy! A billion does help though.

A mobile billboard company will be cruising Manhattan next week, most likely starting at the mayor’s Upper East Side home, with an truck-sized sign intended to push the billionaire independent into launching a third-party bid. “Support Mike Bloomberg for president,” it reads, under a photograph of the White House. “The only presidential candidate that can’t be bought.” So far the “truth squad” can’t argue with that!

Lenny Sobel, the owner of the Long Island-based company, Mobile Ads, said he is covering the production costs of about $2,000, plus the additional expense of driving the truck. I think he has way too much time on his hands.

The launch comes the day before Super Tuesday, when New York and 23 other states hold their primaries and caucuses, and Sobel says it’s the perfect time to parade a Bloomberg billboard through the streets. Sobel believes Bloomberg’s wealth makes him unique in that he is not beholden to special interests. “He seems to be a true person who can make change without anybody in his back pocket,” Sobel said.

Bloomberg spokesman Stu Loeser declined comment on the ad campaign.

For his part, Bloomberg, said again Friday that he is “not a candidate.” And believe you-me he’s not YET a candidate. Of course he may decide to NOT be a candidate (seriously). I compare it to Bush saying he’d not yet declared war on Iraq- all the while with 150,000 troops on the ground just outside the Iraqi border.

Who could have guessed six months ago that a McCain candidacy that was financially broke would be the most viable Republican candidate and that the most powerfull and financially strong one (Hillary) would be on the ropes and be close to being knocked out by an upstart Junior Senator from Illinois.

The first real black president just may be on the verge of a major upset come Super Tuesday. And he might be upset by a candidate that’s not yet announced. Talk about a wild political ride!
