Third Party Tremors?
July 25, 2007
Will he or won’t he? In the latest twist to Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s “I’m-not-running-for-president” campaign, team Bloomberg has fired up a new Web site titled “mike2008.com.” Is this just another tease or is the mayor finally telling voters that maybe, just maybe, he will be running for president after all?
“This site will help you learn more about the issues important to me and the causes I’ve supported in business, philanthropy, and public life,” Bloomberg wrote on the home page. This is the man himself now, not someone else writing about Mike, but Mike on Mike!
The site promotes issues he has tackled as New York City’s mayor, but also look very much like a presidential platform: improving schools; reforming health care; keeping illegal guns off of our streets; bringing nonpartisan solutions to government; building affordable housing; strengthening the economy; protecting the environment; and reducing poverty.
Strengthening what, which economy? New York City? Or, America?
The mayor linked this new site to his recently re-launched mikebloomberg.com. The combined online power of his sites fuels new speculation that the billionaire could self-finance an independent campaign for the White House ever since he dropped out of the Republican party last month.
A Quinnipiac University poll showed that voters approved of Bloomberg’s job as mayor by 73 percent to 19 percent. Kinda makes Bush a little envious doesn’t it!
