Third-Quarter Fundraising Numbers Time
October 1, 2007
Fred Thompson’s fund raising in his first go-round as a declared presidential candidate could offer some surprisingly strong numbers as the entire field of 2008 candidates gets down to counting up their booties in the third-quarter money chase. FOX News has learned that Thompson, the former Tennessee senator, will report having raised in excess of $8 million dollars in this quarter of the fiscal year. That’s in addition to $3.5 million he raised in June. According to Thompson aides, the campaign raised $200,000 a day since “announcing” his candidacy after Labor Day. Thompson had more than 70,000 donors, which far out paces most candidates in both fields in their first quarters as candidates.
White House hopefuls are out on the trail this weekend, cramming in as many fund raising events as possible. So what’s the rush? Sunday not only brings to a close the month of September, but it also is the last day the presidential campaigns can raise funds that will be counted in the third quarter of this year. Come Monday, the campaigns have to report how much money they’ve raised the past three months. And other than national and state polls, campaign cash is one of the best numerical barometers to measure a candidate’s strength.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson raised about $5.2 million for his Democratic presidential bid during the last three months, bringing his total fund raising for the year to more than $18 million, his campaign said Sunday.
Other campaigns are trying to downplay their numbers, while raising the expectations of their adversaries. Soon we will know!
