What’s Happening In Florida?
June 30, 2006
There are about a dozen Senate seats that both parties are keeping an eye on; and spending big bucks to win. One such battle involves U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, (R-Fla.), who has become a lightning rod for the Democrats. Ben Nelson, the incumbent Democrat was once thought beatable; however, if Harris wins the primary, does Ben have a free ride?
The Republicans have done everything they can to keep Harris from winning the primary; however, it appears to me that she can’t be stopped at the primary level. Jeb Bush, in a rare political maneuver, publicly said she could not win and even went so far as to seek out candidates to back against her in the primary. Meanwhile, Harris has been shooting herself in the foot, and turning over staff like she was fliiping pancakes at a fund-raiser.
You have to gaive her credit though, she is feisty. A friend of mine was the ghost writer for her latest book. Having worked with her, he found her tireless, relentless, and smart as they come. The fact that sh’e committed to spending every dime she personally has to move from Congresswoman to Senator, says a lot. I wouldn’t say Ben has a lock on this Senatorial seat as we’re still four months away from November, and the Republicans need every seat they can get. So watch for them to come to her aid before it is all over.
The latest polls show Nelson winning 59% of the vote as compared to only 29% for Harris. Watch those numbers change once the primary is over. This is going to be a fun one to watch. Ben Nelson’s voting record is LEFT of Hillary. I know Florida isn’t that liberal. Don’t you just love the intrigue and mystery of it all? I do. I guess that’s why I’ve been a political junkie all my life.
